  • Farming in the Snow Montana Style!!! 2021
    In today's video, I will take you on a tour of Greyn's fertilizer plant where we have been buying fertilizer for over 40 years!!! I take a ride in the big tractor that my dad hired to fertilize our fields. It is 10 below zero F in Montana!! The tractor is having a hard time getting up the hills with a 16,000 pound load of fertilizer. We zoom around the fields. I learn that our wheat needs nutrients just like people. My dad flies his drone over the truck filling up with fertilizer and also around our Montana fields. The GPS on the tractor shows us what has been fertilized and what has not. This is no farm simulator! This is the real thing! The snow is all over the place this winter. We don't usually farm in the snow. We need to make sure our crop can take advantage of the moisture and that is why we are laying fertilizer in the snow. This is real-life farming under the big sky, Golden Triangle area in Montana!!

    My Story…
    Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

    Hello from Germany!
    I am always fascinated by the size of the fields and the vast country. Thanks for the video, it's very interesting and informative! It also makes sense to apply the artificial fertilizer in the snow. So everything is washed into the ground with the snowmelt. The snow is also very important for the water table. The fertilizer then stays in the soil exactly where it is needed. Nothing grows without fertilization. So our food also gets nourishment to grow.
    Stay save and healthy!
    Greetings to your family!

    I would never have guessed that you would put fertiliser on snow! It makes perfect sense when you hear the reasoning and saves work later on when there is probably something else to do on the farm. So much technology involved too: soil analysis, biochemistry, fertiliser chemistry & manufacture, meteorology (always the weather!), the application technology and of course satellite tech - where would we be without GPS? Lost in the snow I of course!

I guess out there you have to be prepared to work in winter weather because of a shorter growing season then we have back here in Md. Looks like they've come a long ways in the last 15 yrs. That spreader is way nicer than the Lorals they used to run. Cultiva or Satlock 1st Gen GPS, Dickey John controllers, and plugged rear distribution boxes in the snow. Vern even has cameras now on his blender! Nice!

    You seem to have lots of talent!! Love your channel!!
    Fertilizing in the winter is a noval concept!!
    Do you need to worry about runoff?

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you so much for your kindness!!! TV would be pretty interesting for sure!!! We don't have any run off because our snow is very dry and when it starts to melt the winds pick up and a lot of evaporation occurs before it can even get to the dirt. We sure hope there is enough moisture because we haven't had any since last fall. We are almost headed for a drought. Thank you again!!!!

  • @mmurphy2528

    Wow fertilizer application on top of snow & frozen ground, in my mind i'd wait till spring but maybe that'd be too late then? 😎

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you for your comment and question. If we wait until spring it might be too muddy to get into the field. Also, we might not have enough moisture to be able to fertilize and if we did it might burn the winter wheat.

    G, day Kate's Ag from Sydney, Australia.
    As the Winter snow has covered Montana, I hope you are doing well, safe and busy.
    * thanks for the detailed and concise look at your farm fertilisation program. I have some experience with Superphosphate NPK granuals in market gardening of fruit and vegetables.
    * the horses look strong, but, what is the saddle rash on Goldies back?
    * any thought of growing Trout in a pool and clearing them old fish out of the dam?
    Anyways.... We in Australia: well Sydney are cooling down from Summer to 6 degrees Celsius overnight. That's not to bad!
    Well Kate always happy to see your episodes.
    Take care and most of all "Have fun".

      Hello from Montana!!! The horses are strong and healthy. Goldie has a small white mark on her withers and she got that from a local trainer. My mom was super upset and she had some big words for him!!! Our horses are our family and my mom gets really upset when she sees people being mean to any horse. That is why she rescues them too. Thank you so much for your kind words and great questions and information!!!

    Fertilizing the field covered by snow is just mind-boggling. This is a tedious, dangerous job since you can lose your sense of direction, no perception of whatever hazard might be in the field (rocks, dead wood, animal carcass, etc.) and the job could induce you to fall asleep while driving. I know it will drive me crazy just looking at those endless blanket of snow.
