Chicken Math Is REAL! Did You Get A Big Enough Property For Homesteading?

  • Chicken math is real guys and you need to ask yourself if the property you are getting is big enough for the type of homesteading you want to do. Many people are making the switch from city living to country dwelling but I think think there area some important questions you must ask yourself before making the leap. If you have already made the leap think about how you want to scale things and if your property can accommodate all the things you have dreamed up!

I had 10 acres in SW Florida that turned to swamp land because developers stared developing around Mr ranch. I had hoped sea, chickens and goats. Swamp land is not good for animals because the stress from the wetness. After getting hit by two major hurricanes and I lost animals because of the flooding and the wind.
I sold out and moved to 40 acres of beautiful rolling hills with nice large pastures. We got hit by another hurricane. We had damage to all the animal shelters and trees.
I brought my horses and goats with me. I only had one chicken left because of predation, but my son sent four chickens with me, plus the former owner left most of his wild game hens. I now have rabbits, I plan on getting quail. I had a heat stroke that caused two brain bleeds so I have to really be careful not to get too hot. I also am not supposed to eat any red or fatty meat because of the brain bleeds. I can eat goat, any poultry, fish and wild meat.
But another thing people need to think about is the condition of the land. You have some really great advice, thank you.

❤ Sometime in the future I would find a good spot on the property for a pond and put some fish in it. At least 1 acre 2 if Mike's job pays good enough.
I had one in my front yard that was only 50'x60' but I put fish in it and some of them were 8 lbs to 12 lbs catfish.
The ducks loved it and they would learn to fly and come back to land in that small pond. It was fun watching them land too fast and too late for a good safe landing lol.
When they get older and better flyer perfect landing at 20 to 30 mph.
The would fly to my neighbors pond about 2 miles away and stay all day in his 3 acre pond but ALWAYS be back home by feeding time lol.

In some areas if you don't have a certain size you are not allowed to have animals make sure you check the area that you are looking at if you don't have 20 plus acres your not allowed to have animals and check what they consider a small farm because in some areas the tax base is really high if it's not considered ag

My grandparents were farmers in Michigan 100s of acres down by Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights was my great grandparents farm. We had 25 acres in Midland, 160 acres in clare county for hunting it had a blueberries marsh. We lived on the 25 acres, raised alot of different meat birds, chickens, pheasant, turkeys & ducks. We ate venison and did alot of fishing. Huge gardens we canned everything we could, 2 huge freezers. We bought our milk, cheeses, Jif 😂. Ww dug a pond it was 30 ft deep. Feed can get expensive but its worth it. I had to move to Arizona after i had heart surgery and am now 60 and no way able to start over. 😢😢❤ i miss my life in Michigan but id be dead if i stayed. ❤

It’s not easy at first but I always think about how people 100 years ago had to do it, or they ate a potato for supper. Challenge yourself because the way things are going.. Well, you know!
