  • First round draft picks get the most attention in the NHL but the New York Islanders have truly found some gems in the later rounds of the NHL draft. In fact, they have found players are late as the 14th round (now there are only seven) who became major contributors to the team's dynasty.
    Today we examine the best late round draft picks made by the Isles from Garry Howatt and Stefan Persson all the way up to Matt Martin and Anders Lee.
    Plus, as the Edmonton Oilers seek to become the first team to come back from a 3-0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Finals, we remember the Isles magic comeback from a 3-0 series deficit in 1975, the series that announced the arrival of the team as a true contender under Al Arbour.
    All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

    A classic episode Gil, thank you so much for your insight and hard work. Bill Torrey's assistant architect, back in the 70's was Jimmy Devellano, a great assessor of young talent. That 75' team grew the fan base exponentially. So many unsung heroes on that team. I will never forget Clark Gillies clobbering Dave "The Hammer" Schultz. That period between 75 to 85 was such a great time to be a fan. That team inspired so many kids playing street hockey in eastern Queens/Nassau-Suffolk counties.

      So glad you enjoyed this episode, Mary. Yes, Torrey and Devellano were a great team and they really were able to build one of the greatest dynasties ever in the history of sports. I remember Gillies beating up on Schultz. What a great team that was. I was one of those kids playing street hockey in the 70s and 80s as a result of that great team. Thanks for the comment. We need to keep our picks and develop. I just hope Roy has influence over some of the decisions made going forward. Signing MacLean was a good start, obviously means someone will be gone off current roster. Great insight as always Gil, thanks.

      We will need Roy to have influence or we're stuck with Lou's choices and Roy needs players to fit his system I would think the players who won't be back because of MacLean would be Martin and Clutter, but we'll see what Lou does. Thanks for the comment, Ian

      Not if Lou can help it!?! lol Lou drafts like his age. He knows this is his last chance so he is willing to sacrifice the future for the present and leave the mess for the next gm. So my concern is now focusing on the next gm and that should be 2025 or 2026 and this GM has to be a good pick because they are gonna have a huge mess to clean up.

    Good morning team. I hit the thumps up. Who's next?? Gil, thank you so much for that walk down memory lane. Made me think of something I haven't thought in a very long time. I was under the assumption of all the players on the team needs to be like McDavid, and in this day and age, maybe that's true. But in the mid 70's, well into the 80's, the most important thing for a team was probably team chemistry. Saw some old footage of the Islander Stanley Cup years, in comparison to the present, I would consider them to be a not so fast skating team. It was a much different game back then. Loved the show. Thank you again. Everyone have a great day! See you all again next time. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

      Yeah, the game was different back then. The amazing thing about the dynasty era Isles was they could beat you in so many ways. They could shut you down defensively, outscore you, be more physical. That was the key, whatever type of game you wanted to play, they could play. Thanks for the comment, Tony. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? I hope they keep John McClane, but at at the same ⌚, it depends on them. Drafts from the past. Round 14, 1974. Stefan Persson. He was there when The Islanders won their Stanley Cups. Round 10, 1972, Garry Howatt only 5'9, but he had some spice. Round 10, 1989. David Volek scored the GW goal against The Pittsburgh 🐧, the reigning Stanley Cup Champions at the ⌚.
    Rich Pilon, couldn't score a lot goals, but, he could be like Rip Wheeler when it came to having his teammates 14: backs. In 1989, Rob DeMaio respectable career. Andrew McDonald fan favorite. Anders Lee 252nd round in 2009 still respectable career. Tommy Salo a nice career. Matt Martin, nice draft, ❤and soul, I hope they keep him. I HOPE THE IPANTHERS DON'T BECOME A VICTIM OF HISTORY TOMORROW. I remember it well, Gil. It was their first winning season, and their first appearance in the playoffs to go with it. They beat The Rangers at The Garden. They came back from 3 down to take out Pittsburgh. Then came The Philadelphia Flyers,. The defefending Stanley Cup Champions. Games 1, 2, and 3 were men against the boys, but then they put a good scare into them, but #18 sending Kate Smith 🎉b4 game 7 backfired on them. Oh b4 I forget, The Islanders had a future Islander a Black Ace, an 18 year old named Bryan Trottier. They made the rest of The NHL STAND UP AND TAKE NOTICE, SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF THE FLYERS, it was nice. Hear from you later, Gil, LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

    Isles 'found' 27, 3, 53, 30, 17, 24, all drafted by garth outside of the first round. And with all those first round picks blown on nino, strome, dal colle, ho sang, bellows, wahlstrom, and holmstrom maybe isles are better off just trading first away every year like the last four firsts that were traded away. And with isles in on marner, ehlers, laine a first will be gone by draft next weekend once again.
    And bow tie knew how to draft. The bulk of the dynasty was all built thru the draft with many later round gems torrey found. And his '74 draft was gold. His best draft. Jethro, trots, first, second, langevin 7th, and persson 14th. Bourne was a third round pick too that draft-by kc scouts. Also stole bossy in '77 draft. And his '81 trade of cameron, lorimer to rockies got isles a first in '83 draft that turned into the third pick and lafontaine. Unfortunately for isles the dynasty couldn't be replenished because bow ties drafts after '83 couldn't turn out top talent anymore. Bow tie loved whl kids and kept going there too many times for draft picks mid-'80's to early '90's that failed.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders  Před 8 dny

      Bow tie worked the draft well and added Bourne in one of the greatest trades in Isles history. We'll see if Lou can change course and make some good picks. With no top picks, the Isles top prospects are 4th or 5th round picks. Thanks for the comment, Steven.

    When Lou became GM, they could of blown the entire team up and started over. But the team had good players they hired Barry Trotz who is a great coach. The biggest blunder was not trading John Tavarez in his walk year, Garth failed to do what was best for the franchise & not JT. And I get the frustration with Lou, looks like the entire franchise has been stuck in the mud. Lou's dealt #1 picks but added players to roster that have contributed multiple years. Adding Bo Horvat was huge, Romanov is young another good pick up. They got JP for face offs, he is a real steady player; special teams adds some offense and for those picks the Isles got real value. The only way the Islanders deal that pick is if they think (that player they add); will be an Islander for multiple years, fills a need and is better then who they can draft at #20.
    I think they need start to pay attention to the blue line. I would like to see the Islanders really assess they're defense and do what's best for the franchise. Here is where I throw the curve ball.....Trade Noah Dobson and get this team a LW on the top line.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders  Před 8 dny +1

      Not sure they'll trade Dobson. 70 point defensemen don't grow on trees. Since Dobber only earns $4 million this year, they will also need to trade away another high salaried player to make room under the cap for that top wing. We'll see how it plays out. Thanks for the comment, MrRobT1971.
