      You can temper it differently -- we have a pair of extra soft claws, and a pair of hard claws (the ones used in the test)

    Not as strong as your other claws, but the science behind these is MUCH cooler. Now if you can fuse it with another metal to make them as powerful and self healing, it’d be pretty cool

      Nah, the metal goes back into shape with body temp, he would just pull them back into his arms and then they would turn back to normal within seconds.

      @@nobodyinparticular968 Due to Wolverines regeneration it causes him to have super strength, high reflexes, and a sped-up body system. Meaning his body is much higher temp than normal persons. Not to burning lava level but probably to a noticeable level. As the claws go in they continue to straighten until they are completely back to normal.

    Hey Hacksmith, nitinol can be reformed by passing electricity through it...we can incorporate it to the claws instead of taking a heater each time it gets deformed

    Claws are a little thin, a slightly thicker ones could end up more deadly. There was a thickness limit for nitinol to retain ability to self-heal?

      @@doubledarefan uh, yeah, but there are easy solutions to such problems, some are naturally occurring already, for example, the thinner sections will lose heat faster, and since its made from metal, it is quite thermally conductive, constantly spreading out the heat. and listen, the tips can only get white-hot if the power is flowing through the tips, and how can you put a wire on the tip of the claws, and have the claws still function? besides, if its glowing white-hot, it would ruin the shape memory alloy, its only supposed to get to like, 100C max! that's all you need for it to snap back into place! what in the world are you expecting them to do? connect the claws to a thunderstorm and zap them with lightning??? why in the world would they heat it up that hot? they would burn up the metal in a matter of minutes if it was that hot! you're conclusion makes no sense, I mean, yes, the thin bits will get hotter faster, but you can overcome that problem fairly easily by making the power not flow through the tip, and have the spread of heat go into the tip through thermal conduction.

    Next Version Idea: Sharpen the sides of the claw so that you can actually slice things like a knife.
    We can also try and make them retractable and turn the whole thing into a glove which gives more of a wolverine look too

    I think that material would be more practical for making machines or possibly Buildings. In the game subnautica there was a repair tool that moved wires and bent pieces of metal back into place. If it was made of that material that would make sense, the repair tool would just be a heater. If you could make houses and other buildings from that in areas that have a lot of natural disasters it would significantly help fix the damage.

      Algo is weird, I saw a short on yt showing a small clip of him hitting the concrete then reforming them. Then like a minute later I saw a short explaining nitinol, then I thought back to the short and looked up the full vid to see if it was nitinol lol.

    This reminded me of the PAL key in Metal Gear Solid (stated to be a "Shape Memory Alloy") which you need to heat up and cool down to change its state I honestly thought this was a purely fictional material, and while the way it is portrayed in the game is probably fictional it has made me interested in looking into this material more, just to sate my curiosity, this was a cool project, really enjoyed it.

      The larger the cross section, lesser the resistance. It is inversely proportional

As long as it can create a small 40°C, which is a very small amount compared to what a portable battery could do for metal plates that small, it can easily be done. And it doesn’t have to be on constantly, just long enough to last. It’s not an uncommon method to use electricity to reset smart metal positions.

    There’s one problem, they aren’t nearly as effective as your original claws, maybe try covering it a very thin sheet of melted metal so it’ll still reform but it will be slightly stronger

    Such a cool ability to self heal.
    Would be amazing if you were able to make them a bit more solid and made them able to slice a bit more than stabbing.
    Then apply the heat from the previous project of wolverine claws so you could self heal by the press of a button.
    Would be incredible

    Watching James go berserk on the door with the claws either shows he was really comfortable with possibly hurting his currently only good hand, and also letting out some anger, because you could tell he used pent up aggression to get past the fear of possibly damaging another bone.

      @@numerum_bestia ok, but let's keep in mind, those are lined up with the spaces between his knuckles, and that if one pushes too hard at just the right angle, he can dislocate a finger and ruin another hand for a while, which doesn't seem likely to happen, but considering his luck recently, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

      @@lag00n54 adamantium isnt some metal that can be found as solid and then reworked by melting. It is liquid mixture of multiple melted metals and components that are melted and mixed and must be given shape to it in 8 minutes after those 8 minutes it turns into solid adamantium and then it is almost impossible to melt, it even survived temperature close to that of sun

    What we really need for this series is some bloodborne weapons, I feel like they be slept on and the transformations between the two forms of almost every weapon in that game is not only cool as hell but some if not all are possible.       Very cool to see how Nitinol is produced. We use this all the time for guidewires and some of the implants that were discussed. Very cool stuff.
