Which of these band names have you actually been pronouncing correctly this entire time?
It's pronounced _Dee Antvoord_ The 'w' is pronounced as a 'v' in afrikaans
Grunge, I pronounce the band's name like Metallica, Linkin Park, and Disturbed
Grunge I've been pronouncing Chvrches correctly, I listen to them.
Die antwoord sounds almost like the normal german pronaucation. Afrikaans is partly dutch anyway which is simular to german
Grunge antwoord is pronounced aunt word
*eye twitch* you still pronounced Die Antwoord wrong....
Alphie LaFray same
Indeed, and so did Letterman
I gringed so hard, but seriously how can one write ot to sound phonetically correct? Its like wilderbeest and boomslang, no matter what they WILL get it wrong cuz MURICA knows best.
Would you spell it like auntvord? I don't know if there is a way to phonetically spell it
wait if it is afrikaans, does that language have history with german? because normal, die ect. are german words (but I guess those words are in different languages too?)
Gotye stands for 'Game Of The Year Edition'. It's obvious.
Indeed. But the name is actually pronounced: Sting.
Personally, I always thought he came up with it because he was too dyslexic to spell "goatee".
finally a man of culture
Me or Bryan? I'd say it's me because it's culturally agreed that no one named Bryan can be cultured.
to be fair he did make a good point but yes if your name is bryan you cant be cultured (sorry brian)
lol this is funny
Beiber is actually pronounced ''douchebag.''
@I.F. Horus you sure you don't mean "I'm really jealous and wish that it affected Justin Bieber on any level that I call him a douchebag"? Kid might have made some dumb moves but if you go around calling everyone a douchebag instead of a more appropriate term like 'misguided', how will we know what to call you?
oh my gosh Ive been sayin it wrong my whole life
gaan eet n burger
I.F. Horus a
No douchebag is correct
Am I the only one that caught that roast on Macklemore 😂😂 “don’t mistake it for Mac l’amore or any other talented artist” 😂
*Interviewer:* "Why is it that so many like electronic acts, like, change letters, and like take out letters and add numbers and make words?"
*Band Member:* "Drugs"
Noah It’s “L33T”. It stands for “Elite”, an encrypted language that changes depending on the group and scenario, however is used amongst elite MOAB and MMORPG clans and tribes.
Artists heard about this and decided to use it, without studying how it works, why it works, and when it’s appropriate to use.
because it's kvlt and edgy
Mispronouncing shit in a video about mispronunctiation
indeed, he butchered the name "Wouter"
Damn. This video STILL pronounces ''Die Antwoord'' wrong.
(I'm South African)
Yeah, I thought it was more like "D ant fort"
silentscreams1988 Well why don't one of you guys just type how it's spelled instead of driving me fooking nuts just stating the same thing without showing how it's spelled which takes two seconds
thanks for leaving us hangin, guy.
They tell you how to pronounce it on one of their albums. “Dee Unt Voord”
Yeah I'm Dutch so I find it so weird to hear it 'German-wise'
Likke Li: "Hi, I'm Lykke Li!"
Narrator: "..Licky Lee..."
Staudinka Licky Leeks 😂
Hi I’m (lee-key li)
Licky Lee
In Swedish and Danish Lykke means happy, and Lykke Li ss pronounced like "lykkelig" which means happily.
I thought it was always pronounced ‘Likely’
thought it was lucky luke
And you still said Die Antwoord wrong. AAnt-vord (and you have to roll the R) Even David Letterman got it wrong. Go listen to an Afrikaans person say it. Or just listen to the artist say it. You have just help more people say it wrong and help solidify the world to say it wrong even more
Ryan Smith was totally gonna say this.
A correction from my first post. The "w" is pronounced more "v" I would say more Dee Unt-vort. Pronouncing the "Un" the way you do in "Under"
No it's not pronounced as a double A... it's 'ahnt'... the 'o' is pronounced as double... and the 'w' is pronounced as a 'w'... not a 'v'. Saying it like 'Dee Untvart' is wrong... 'Dee Ahntwohrt' is more like it.
No, you are wrong. I am from South Africa. I can speak Afrikaans. And I just showed another South African what you thought.. We both agree that yours is faaar off.
+micglou im with you on this. I'm afrikaans and yours makes more sense that Vart. its more an "ooo" sound than an "aa" sound. you explained it perfectly.
who can't pronounce Lykke Li?
The host of this horrible thing
As the Three Stooges have said ►♪♫ L.A - (Lay) , L.E - (Lee), LI - (Licky Li), L.O - (Low) ♫♪
"Band Names You've Been Mispronouncing This Whole Time" ....then mispronounces Wouter de Backer
I pronounce the band “Live” as “Live not “Live”.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I pronunce the band live as life but mean the name Leif who is pronunced like live.. Wtf
It is? I always thought Leif was pronounced "layf"
I absolutely LOVE this comment.
Their logo has a macron (dash) over the 'I' in Live, giving it a long I vowel sound; LIVE, as in a live concert or something happening at the present moment.
Lykke Li sounds like the danish word Lykkelig which means happy, but Lykkelig in danish is not just happy but VERY VERY happy. Happy is more equal to glad which lesser than Lykkelig. :)
And in Dutch it sounds like a person who likes to lick :D
well its not Swedish you cant have two K's after each other it has to be a (ck) like the Swedish word for happy: Lycklig. :)
Thomas Sander Norwegians also use the word lykkelig, same way as Danish. :)
Yes, because the Danes took over our country for like 400 years and butchered our language with theirs ;)
I've not been pronouncing any of them wrong, because I've never bloody heard of any of them
never heard of Gotye?
Ok, a slight exaggeration on my part. yes I've heard of Gotye, but that is about it. I can honestly say that i've never heard of any of the others, i really haven't.
+Steven Mason same here, also gotye doesnt count if the artist doesnt even know how to fucking pronounce it
I gotchu...neither have I actually. Other than Gotye, I know Die Antwoord, and that's only because of the movie Chappie.
Steven Mason
You have a cool name bro
“Haim” means life in Hebrew.
Thank you💙
😶thank you 💙💙💙💙
Cheers!
Good to know I’ve been pronouncing everything correct this whole time.
I never prenounced "Die Antwoord" wrong, I'm Dutch and in Dutch it's almost the same... the meaning is also the same...
same in german. Here, it's "Die Antwort". Pretty much the same thing.
what do you mean, almost ther same in dutch. isnt it just dutch
afrikaans is a mix of dutch and some native language which was (or is) spoken in south africa. Thats because south africa was a colony of the netherlands. so afrikaans sounds similiar to dutch at some points. and sry dont want to be a smart aleck, just wanted to let you know.
Yeah it's kinda similar.. But in Afrikaans it sounds more like 'Dee Untvoort'. Some people describe Afrikaans as Kitchen Dutch because it's apparently not as complex. So we don't even say it like the video describes.
That's how I knew that one, American here but I lived in Amsterdam for a while and went full cultural immersion
when the video for correct pronunciations doesn't even pronounce die antwoord correctly...
This should be retitled "Band names Americans mispronounce because they have no clue about other languages".
The 3nd one.
Ur just mad because your country probably hasn't been to the moon :/
Why should anyone care about other languages? English is the master language. If you don't speak english you suck.
David Brent yeah sure
Bellamoli Riccardo fuckin-a right "yeah sure"!
Why you gotta throw shade at macklemore?
He sucks
that was weird, he didnt diss anyone else on the list, not even the creepy monk drone sun band. if he hates rap just leave him off the list, no need to act petty
it's pronounced "Dee Ant voord"
Drunken Boner finally !!! someone got it right !!!!
Lykke li, I think, is a play on words in scandinavian languages. Lykke li, sounds exactly like lykkelig (Norwegian and danish) and lycklig (swedish) which translate to being extremely happy
That Sigur Ros album "( )" is perhaps one of the best albums I've ever heard.
The only reason why i clicked this was because of chappie
It's pronounced "di antvoord" because "W"s are pronounced as "v"s in Afrikaans
I would have phonetically spelled it "Dee Antvoord" because, while you are correct about the V, in German, Dutch, Afrikaans "ie" is pronounced "ee".
Sarah West hahah waar
Why should i tell you my name J/c what is your first language? I speak English and German. When I explain the whole thing about how to pronounce German words, it works to tell people to pronounce it as if the second letter is the long vowel sound, as ei sounds like the English letter i. And ie sounds like the English letter e. I guess if you speak Dutch or Afrikaans, ee would be more of an eh-eh sound?
But Americans don't know that.
Who actually gives a fuck anyway. They are useless.
This channel is pronounced "Groon-Gee." Is that right? Asking for a friend.
It's actually pronounced "video blocker". Look it up. You'll thank me later...
dirty harry1881 lmao
No, it's "jenga" with an R.
Looooll. I read that in Afrikaans and it doesn't sound anything like Grunge. Hahahahaha
It's actually pronounced flatstonaliasphericalistraphinalisticologronicalintrastrious
You pronounced Die Antwoord wrong
Nobody gives a fuck because they are shit.
Thank you!
Mr.Mister boooo
Mr.Mister fokken lame
Sebastian Gonneau the irony
I was glad to see Sigur Rós was mentioned. They're an amazing band!!
Lykke Li is also extremely close to the Danish word "lykkelig", which means a combination of "happy" and "fortunate". Although she's from Sweden, where the word is spelled "lycklig", one might think she borrowed the word from her "neighbors" to the southwest.
"Why not Lykke Lig, then?" Well, "lig" means "corpse" in Danish, and in Swedish it's "lik".
So cool to see Alvvays on this list, their new album is fantastic.
It took me half the video to realize each band got a "clever" title card before actually displaying the band name. I was confused thinking the "clever" title card was the band's name. Very unnecessary.
I liked it. When they were doing Sunn O))) and they said "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh no" I knew immediately who they there talking about. Partially because I was waiting for a... you know a metal band on a channel called fucking Grunge. Or at least some rock.
Hey Siri : Please search for !!! (you doing it with the tongue three times :) ) Siri: There are no locations in your area for parrot food , please rephrase your question !!!
The title of Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album, _(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd),_ is a pronunciation key to aid fans into properly pronouncing the group's name... inspired by their gym coach, Leonard Skinner.
Honestly...I haven't even heard of 90% of those bands/artists
Another honesty....I'm totally cool with that!
I dread to have a look at your record collection then
I wasn't expecting Sunn O))) to be on the list.
Lol same. I thought they should be because I pronounced it wrong for a long time and still read it as "Sun Oh"
How on Earth could you forget Lynyrd Skynyrd?!
I usually see people misspelling their name, not mispronounced. Can't count the times I've seen people spell it "Leonard Skinard" lmao
No kidding mate, I've heard people pronounce it LIE-nerd SKY-nerd.
I just read that as Leonard Skynard. Is that correct [checks comments]
They say how to pronounce it on their first album how do people still mess up
Here are fun ways to mispronounce their band name: LanYard-SkyNerd, Linyerd-Skinerd, Linnyred-Skinyard.
What about PVRIS?
Badlands' Crybaby i think it's paris like the city
paris
Omf I've always been too scared to mention this, cause I thought it was just me being stupid. It took me like 2 years to realise that it was Paris, not P-V-R-I-S
Same thing as CHRVCHES; it's just prounounced as Paris, but distinguishes itself from the city Paris by spelling it like that.
lol when I used to pronounce it as puhv-ris
I'VE NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE. AND IT FEELS SO DAMN GOOD.
You still butchered Lykke Li
This actually helped because that means that I was always saying "Haim" and "Bon Iver" wrong...they did however get "Sigur Rós" a bit wrong. The "Rós" part is similar to the German Rose and therefore there is more emphasis on the "o" part. There is one band I would love to know how to pronounce right - "M83". Is it "m-eighty-three" or actually "m-quatre-vingt-trois" since its a French band?
Seeing the Sunn O))) section made my day
Die antwoord was pronounced wrong in that video. . .I'm south african
Leuk dat je afrikaans bent, maar ja het is inderdaad verkeerd uitgesproken
Ek ook bra en die video het my afgepis
In dutch and indeed pretty dumb he pronounced it wrong david letterman said it right hè can't even repeat someone 😶
When I’m referencing Die Antwoord, I just use the term “talentless shit”. People know who you’re talking about
brandon findt no one gives a shit if ur South African
Lykke Li, is a great name, if you're from Scandinavia :P
It also makes her sound like a chinese woman who may hang out with Peter Parker and Bruce Banner.
The Lykke part sounds like Norweigan
Cheesy Big Well, you are close but she's actually swedish :|
Cheesy Big it is
Realy, talking about mispronouncing the band names, yet you mispronounced 'Wouter'.
Good job!
Sigur Ros also invented a brand new language (The Hopelandic) which is similar to the real icelandic but without any sense and made only for matching the song musicality. One of the best bands out there
that golf shot to the nuts was the best part about this whole video.
A lot of people still pronounce Dj Khaled wrong like Kayled or Khaleed although most of the songs start with him telling his name.
I get him confused with Khalid too
Die Antwoord, like you pronounced in the video, is STILL WRONG. :D
It's more like "Dee Unntworrd" (with a german-like-rolling-R).
That's still wrong. You pronounce it as Dee Untvoord (with the rolling R)
Spirit D'freak yeah...still wrong
Matsuo Lano Nope. Go listen to the track "Dance wif da Devil" on their mixtape Suck on This. That's how they pronounce it.
well i think they mean like the r from the throat in contrast to the english r.
arunashamal actually, Southern germans and Austrians do. Northerners do it sometimes, when they're emphasizing an r
you get -1.000 rock points for mispronouncing Sigur Rós in a video dedicated in correcting people saying the band name wrong...
(no cash value)
Oh my gosh, how is it actually pronounced?? I've been combing the internet but I cannot find the proper pronunciation!
This guy's throwing shots like he even has a bullet in the gun.
Hands down the most obnoxious commentator ever!
lilclipps Your profile pic is triggering my OCD. J/k
definitely just wiped my computer screen..
Why is there a hair on my screen? Why won't it go away!
.
Chekov does love his wessels
Joseph Hughes da nukleer kind?
BUT HOW DO I PRONOUNCE ELUVEITIE
Random Bystander Eh lu vei ti
it's actually el-vay-ti, Chrigel said so in some interview.
Who gives a fuck. Just enjoy their epic music.
i love that they used a clip of christian slater from heathers
My name is Stubbz, but its pronounced "Throat-warbler Mangrove"
Stubbz But spelled "Raymond Luxury-Yacht"?
Lynyrd Skynyrd...
CentipedeMKDS lie-nerd sky-nerd
trash lord nah its leh-nerd skin-nerd just like the first album says
Yeah, so true))
More people spell it wrong than pronounce it wrong. I can't tell you how many times I see "Lynard Skynard."
CentipedeMKDS their album literally tells you how to pronounce it I don’t know how people get it wrong
He's got a Weird Al shirt on...awesome.
Never realized what Sigur Rós meant, but it makes total sense (it's roughly the same in Swedish).
It's the flower that you give to the winner after a race or contest.
you guys still said die antwoord wrong 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Please. Try some metal for are to pronounce names. Eluveitie, myrkskog. Naglfar list is endless
Týr. Even Smite got that one wrong.
You mispronounced sigur ros
frank grimes Hey Grimey!
The g is pronounced very softly, basicly Sihg-uh-r R-O's
HumanIce I thinks it’s pronounced more like see-your ros. And he was wrong about the sister thing. Her name is just ros. Amazing band regardless
Haha, Icelander here. Sigur means victory and Rós means rose. And here is here full name Sigurrós Elín Birgisdóttir. So I guess everything that he said was correct. Except the the g is very soft, like Humanice said. He actually got it pretty right.
holy shit that macklemore burn was fierce
Why the Macklemore dis? He is incredibly talented. His whole band is.
Donovan Stole Ryan Lewis is a fucking genius man. Don’t understand the dis either.
Donovan Stole lol nice b8
Ikr I love him
I think Macklemore is good for his own music too! Not sure why the hate on his musicianship??
The grammy belonged to kendrick even he acknowledged it.
nah, the ones ive heard of ive been pronouncing right coz its not hard to comprehend other language's differences
omg i can't believe !!! is on this list lol that's amazing
“Sigur rus” sounds like Spanish for cigars: “cigarros”
DIE ANTWOORD is pronounced more like "die antvoordt"
PewPieDie . It is more like Die Antwoard.
Good old Pewds to the rescue of the Afrikaans language.
I'm a native Dutch speaker, No way I'm pronouncing die antwoord wrong 😂
My only question is why is the guy in the thumbnail doing a finger heart
You have found the way my brudah. Let us clap !!!
WOO HOO!!!! Someone actually mentioned Oingo Boingo
Lykkelig means happy
Gelikig means happy in Afrikaans
Music group Jamiroquai (I googled their name 1st, to make sure I spelled their band spelling right?!?) was and still is one of the HARDEST names I couldn’t pronounce for the longest time until I heard someone in the media on TV or radio say and pronounce their name properly!!
I had never heard of any of those bands. Therefore, I hadn't been mispronouncing their names. I haven't even been PRONOUNCING them at all.
No Dimmu Borgir?
Not that hard to pronounce?
Yea, theyre missing too. I always get upset when someone actually pronounces it "Dimmu" and not "Dimmü"
Dummy Burger.
BTW in swedish, Y are pronounced "uh" and the E at the end isn't a true "ee" sound, but mora like a fusion between A and E..
So it's Luhkay Lee
Renard Dubois Lykke isn't Swedish spelling, it is Danish (but not an uncommon name for Swedish girls). Swedish spelling with the same pronunciation is "Lycke" . The actual Swedish spelling of the word luck is "lycka", it is pronounced the same as in Danish (lykke) in most Swedish dialects, but once upon a time, the Swedish king Gustav Vasa despised everything Danish and his spelling mostly apply in Swedish to this day.
We have the weird habit of keeping a lot of forreign spelling in Swedish, like in the Danish name Lykke. As a bonus, most of us are quite good at identifying the language of a word by spelling, and apply the (almost) right pronounciation.
I was looking for Eluveitie
Cool that they included Sunn
Knuckle Puck
(Kah-noo-kuh-la pook)
"Lykke Li" is a play of the word (in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish) Lykkelig which means happy in English!
You should really do more research before posting!
That Macklemore comment was so in called for
I can safely say I don't think i've experienced a pain that made me go "Ow, my liver"
is nobody going to talk about siouxsie and the banshees? (pronounced suzy by the way)
I used to say Soocksies.
Don't even get me started with PVRIS not being based in actual Latin grammar.
Brandon Giltz I agree
it was meant to be an inverted A they were originally called PARIS but had to change their name for legal reasons so Lynn decided to use a V instead of the A
Branimation u
When I heard Nitzer Ebb introduced in an old video, I was surprised to🤔🤔
My radio station rarely named the music and artists
Die Antwoord isn't pronounced correctly by David Letterman or by you, at least it didn't sound it to me and I speak Afrikaans.
Haim is the female version of Hanson. Wait, Hanson was also a girl band, no?
Showing your age there little buddy. Hanson is considered ancient music now. LOL But on a serious note, yes Hanson is also a girl band. LOL
crankysmurf ..except they're good.
Hanson is still releasing music, and it's surprisingly good indie-folky stuff.
Wow I always thought I was pronouncing "Gotye" wrong. Turns out, I've been pronouncing it the right way all along! I haven't really heard about the others, except Die Antwoord and turns out I've also been pronouncing that one right, because my ignorant self always thought it's some version of Dutch.
When you kill the bull in a matador ring, you get a victory rose.
I can proudly say I have never mispronounced any of these band names. Although, that could be because I've never heard of them until this video.
ITS TORBJÖRN
Ooooo...where did you get that overnight bag?
Jean-Paul Gaultier
lol how do you pronounce NOFX
"no effects"?
"die antwoord" is still wrong
Yngwie malsmteen???
lykke li ... is like ... combing the pronunciation of look+leak ... then there's an ever brief pause right into what sounds like 'yuh' ... then lee. and scandinavia often implements incentives into using scandinavian names/words for businesses etc. in this case, im guessing it was maybe a mix a starting small/local and growing worldwide as well as maybe a bit of $upport from their culture fund for having the name.
i got into sleater-kinney recently im glad i know the real pronunciation now lmao
Sigur Rós is pronounced Seer Rose, with the o being like in rose, and the s like in sun
They also don't sing in gibberish as the video claims, they sing in Hoplandic for the most part I believe. It's essentially slang, of the world's hardest language. Svefn-g-englar from Ágætis Byrjun is my jam.
Lord Delow Well, it essentially is gibberish, as it's just sound made to sound like Icelandic. I love that song too
It really isn't. Source: I'm Icelandic.
Nope, Its gibberish. I am icelandic.
Mystískaos Í mean the pronunciation of their name.
