- Rare footage from December 1969. I don't think these goals were ever shown in the Manchester region (or maybe they were - see the comments).
This is also probably the first City game on ITV to be shown in colour (except for the bizarre moment near the end when the programme switches to black & white because of fading light.)
West Ham United 0-4 Manchester City, December 6th 1969.
Scorers: Francis Lee, Ian Bowyer 2, Mike Doyle.
Bizarre that later on, in 69/70 whu win 5-1 at maine road with that famous ronnie boyce goal and Jimmy greaves scoring a hatful. Even as a hammer though, i have to admit City didnt have Lee & Bell that day. City were awesome in the upton park 4-0 match, and had so much raw power, pity they didnt repeat the form of the season before, although winning the League cup and Ecwc was more than enough for any city fan i would imagine. Similar situation to now, and i hope they go on to lift the fa cup.!
Marvelous video! Loved watching all the legends.
great side city then, not mentioned in history as often as they should be imo, people remember Don Revies Leeds,Shankly`s Liverpool,Cloughs Forest i`d rank Mercers city alongside those even though it didn`t last as long
Funny switching to Black & White. The first time I saw a colour TV was the 1973 FA Cup final Leeds v Sunderland.
I really enjoyed watching this.
RIP Doyle
mike doyle (1946-2011) another football legend is gone

Mike Doyle RIP FROM CANADA
rip Mike doyle
@MegaZiggi I agree, easy to see where young Frank Jr got his shooting prowess from!
4-0 yes, but what a blinder Joe Corrigan had. A brilliant keeper .
I know he's a national treasure and scored a world cup hatrick and all that, but I've always had an irrational dislike of Geoff Hurst. A snotty kid at school looked like him and supported West Ham; it must that . Too late to seek help for it though......
pure class......and still are !
Cheers for this, I'm always interested in that kind of detail. Did On The Ball definitely show all the previous weekend's ITV goals?
I'm not 100% sure that was the case. They certainly covered the mid-week matches but in the early 70s the emphasis was on previewing up and coming games from the regions. I remember when Ian Hutchinson developed his long throw in 1970 the following season "On The Ball" ran a competition to find the player with the longest throw in the country. Each region would hold a heat, saving London to last, before dropping the bombshell that Chelsea had refused Hutchinson permission to take part.
on that rarely seen in Manchester/NW area line not exactly true because if they were shown in the NW it would been likely on the Granada's early evening local news show on the Monday or more likely that many City fans may have had to wait until the following weekend's edition of World Of Sport before seeing the goals
Just shows how a 4-0 score can mislead! Both teams hit the bar, but Corrigan was fortunate that he didn't let two or three goals in. City scored two great individual goals and were more lucky than West ham to get their other two.
