  • Cummer's classification of partially edentulous arches is the first professionally recognized classification introduced by Cummer in 1920. It is based on the relationship of the edentulous spaces to the abutment teeth. Dr. Charlin M Bailyn introduced his classification of partially edentulous arches in 1928. It emphasizes support by remaining tissues. Dr. CN Skinner introduced a classification in 1957 based on the relationship of the abutment teeth to the denture base spanning the edentulous area. Based on support (resistance to movement of the denture toward the edentulous ridge), partially edentulous arches have been divided into three groups: Tooth-supported, Tissue-supported and Tooth-tissue supported arches.
