  • From the old Framelines TV series, this tech tip is on the idea of fixing things in post. That was a dreaded term for years and now it can do a lot more than ever before.

Yes, we have more options but it can make people lazy.
I shot a documentary with some re-enactment scenes for a retired journalists "ego project". We were shooting a dialogue scene between two actors in the cockpit of a biplane. I noticed that the "directors" (the journalist) reflection was in the fuselage and asked him to take 3 steps back.
"You can fix that later on the computer" was his reply.
Sure, I could spend a ton of time masking / rotoscoping it out, and slowing my render time due to the extra effect or I could skip all that and have him take literally 3 steps back.
Another example: he chose a horrible Halloween store mustache for one of his actors and then asked me to do a mustache replacement. I pointed out how much that cost to do on Justice League.
Sure, fixing it in post can work for some things but for others it's much much better to get it right in camera.
    For example:
    - you can't fix out of focus shots.
    - you can't fix clipped or distorted audio.
    - you can't fix severely over exposed or under exposed shots.
    - you can't fix glare in glasses from poorly positioned lights.
The "director" for the documentary didn't understand what was possible or that reasonable (I was a one man team, DP, Audio, Editor, VXF ...) and that can come up quite often. Some people seem to think that computers can just magically, with the push of a button or two, fix almost anything.

There are certainly more post options these days but nothing is better than doing it right on set if possible.
