  • A tire flip is not a deadlift.
    "You've got to think offensive lineman," Rob Orlando of CrossFit Strongman says as he instructs Tom Rowland to drive into the tire.
    Ideally, you need to set up a foot to 15 inches away from the tire with the feet outside the hips and the body pressed against the rubber. You drive with the legs to get the tire off the ground, take a half step, then give it a knee with the other leg.
    Many people get the tire off the ground but struggle to complete the flip, often hanging out in a purgatory that involves futile attempts to use the biceps to curl the tire up.
    "You've got to stop for a second," Orlando explains, showing Rowland how to re-grip and get the big tire flipped.
    The real key is being aggressive and keeping the tire in motion by driving it off the floor and kneeing it at the right time.
    Interestingly, a 625-lb. tire is also a nice height for box jumps, as Rowland discovers in the short burner that follows Orlando's instruction.

    I still have a 500lb tire in my backyard that I flip every morning after coffee. Just to keep myself grounded. It really helps with stress also. If I get a little pissed off, I flip it over a few times to chill myself out.

    Love flipping tires. I own 2 big tires, one for 300lbs and the other 510lbs. And man I love it all week

    Okay okay. I did this today for the first time ever. Thought i'd have a quick look to see if i was doing correctly. I am by no means an expert (at all!) but it looks to me from the demonstrations that he is asking for a ripped bicep doing it like that.

    although a lot of rob's techniques look unorthodox. he walks the thin line of what the body can and cannot do. great job.

    You stuffed that big tire with (what appears to be) a few smaller tires. That added weight would be a critical diffidence in moving a tire of those dimensions (referring to the big tire containing the little tires).

    We had to do all this exactly like this for strength an condotioning at school today except we has to squat then pick up the tire using our upper body.

    What happens if it’s a tyre from a gym? they are about half as thin and if you lay forward into them you seem to be too flat. It’s 60kg.

    I have a question. Why do you use your knee and take away the explosive movement when you transition from lifting the tire from the ground, similar to the deadlift, to the power-clean/hang-clean to the final movement by exploding through the tire to finally flip it. I don't understand why the knee drive is used. You don't utilize the knee when you do the power lifts. Deadlift...Power-clean...Hang-clean...thruster.etc etc etc.... I feel the knee drive slows everything down. I have a short video of how I do my tire flips on my channel without using my knee. I am able to engage my hips, glutes, legs and core...everything. I feel that if you use your knee, it takes away the explosive twitch and power movement. I don't want to say you are wrong, maybe just that I agree to disagree on your method of tire flips. Please respond if you wish. From a fitness fanatic to another, I hope I was not offensive. Jeff

      +jeff souder It's about getting the weight into a manageable position. When you start doing heavier tires (example: my last comp added a 1000 pound tire after a 360 farmers carry), you're not going to be able to explode all the way through it. It's going to come down to 2 distinct movements. More like a deadlift to a hang clean. And as every coach will always tell you, you win by training the little things.

    Sorry Davedue, that is dead wrong. The squat is the only movement to use a squat stance. If you stand back a bit from the tire, you can have a fairly narrow stance and generate leverage rather than lift. Standing on top of the tire makes it a dead lift, which is wrong.

      +Isaac Auvaa - don't buy one, just check with places that service tractors or heavy equipment and ask if they have any large tires they are going to get rid of. A lot of places will just give them away if they have a puncture in the sidewall and can't be repaired.

    Crossfit is really not a good source to learn any proper techniques. From the flopping pullups to the other crossfit 'instructor' saying feed not to wide, to this guy's grip emphasising bicep use.
