- Paul groovin' on Herbie's tune "Hang Up Your Hang Ups". Herbie Hancock (kbds), Paul Jackson (bass), Bennie Maupin (saxes), Ray Obiedo (guitar), Bill Summers (perc), Webster Lewis Jr. (kbds), Alphonse Mouzon (drums). Live in concert from Chelsea College, London 1979.
Why thank s so much for saying that. "Mr. Hands" is an awesome funky album that I recorded with Herbie Hancock that features a lot of great musicians!
Are you on drums or percussion or both??? Absolutely slammin
Dear Alphonse, i met you in munich and i was kicked by your performance. I miss you, and wish that we meet again in musicians hell ;-)
For those posing questions to Alphonse, I'm sad to let you know he passed away in 2016. Excellent band leader in his own right, and an amazing drummer.
DaYAAMMMM we were FOONKY!!!!!
Yeah, baba
The legend! Love you Mr Mouzon
R.I.P Paul Jackson
RIP Paul Jackson! You will be forever one of the best bass players of all time ✌️💜
REST IN POWER!
Thank you PAUL JACKSON for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. You did good dude! Your Legacy can not be undone..
Every damn version of this song just blows my mind. Just the shaker is deadly.
Paul Jackson :)
What a great solo too by Bennie Maupin on sax near the end as a finale! Please never take this down!
Rip Paul Jackson ❤
We'll miss you, Paul. Thanks for your badass bass playing!
Masters in the zone!
R. I.P Paul jackson 🙏😔
Alphonse, I saw you guys back in the day and always was amazed at the power of the performances. Still listening to your"funk", thanks millions.
Rip Alphonse!
Thanks CaptBob. I still have the funk and powerhouse playing for jazz and fusion. Not bad for an old man! Ha ha. TenaciousRecords.comm. We're playing up a storm every Friday & Saturday in Venice, CA at The RG Club at 2536 Lincoln Blvd. All videos of me documented here on YT.
All of them are GENIUSES thanks
Rest In Peace, Paul Jackson...
That's a freaky amazing bass tone! Paul jackson FTW
Well, I just listened to about 5 versions of this song. This particular performance is tighter and has more energy than the others.
you certainly were sir.very, very funky.a milestone in funk.
@alphonsemouzon I FREAKIN LOVE MR HANDS!!!! just around the corner is such a funky ass song. THANK YOU FOR THE FUNK!!!
Consummate musicians, one and all. A gift to our ears, minds and souls.
So, so GOOD.
Yeah these Hancock units kinda represent the high water mark of funk. No doubt and when Herbie decided to super impose other tonal possiblities in his piano solos boom we have funk as art music too. But Paul Jackson when he's given the space was the funkiest critter on our planet. No slap no effects just greasy funk.
I often wondered if paul jackson senior still alive...check out herbies c.d. titled flood
So funky!
Man, I could have made my way to London to check this band out...I was stationed in the UK in 1979...
Rip Paul, now you can fly high.
3:25 groove is hypnotic!
Its insane, headhunters groove is the best in the world
impresionante, very very goooooodddd
Adoro questo tema degli herbie hancock. Il tenor sax solo originale di bennie è assolutamente avanti ed inimitabile. AD ALTIORA!
Paul Jackson and Ray Oviedo inserted the Oakland styled funk. A little church and a little sin. Nothing like it.
quite interesting
it is the first time for me to see using hammond in herbie's band
saw same lineup at Old Waldorf in SF coupla months later - burnin! Alphonse & Paul had a a whole other vibe, and Webster and Ray laid on a heapin helpin of grease
I saw this group at the old Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury shortly after this TV performance. It was something of a religious experience for me at the time. Someone posted a comment below about the poor sound quality of this video. It can't be as bad as the recording I made in 1979 on my cassette recorder by putting a mic in front of the tiny TV speaker! Even so, I enjoyed that recording for years afterwards.
A question: Did this performance take place at Chelsea College, London, and was later televised? The info on www.setlist.fm/setlists/herbie-hancock-3d6b557.html is that Hancock performed in London on 16 February '79 at the Rainbow Theatre, and on 17 July '79 at Alexandra Palace, but no more 1979 shows by HH in London are mentioned by setlist.fm.
@@mariapepa2319 I remember watching it on TV when first broadcast, but I don't know if it was before or after the Rainbow Theatre show. I expect it was recorded before, and shown after. It was definitely on the same UK visit. Same band, same set-list - though with additional material at the Rainbow. Btw, the Alexandra Palace performance was part of the 1979 'Capitol Radio Jazz Festival'. I was there too, and Herbie was there playing acoustic piano duets with Chick Corea. (They had a double-album out at the time).
@@timhuskisson Thank you so much, Tim, for the clarifying reply. It helped me to come across czcams.com/video/3p_vwD42PZA/video.html, which says "Herbie Hancock Live 1979 (BBC Rock Goes To College)".
Best wishes, __Hendrik ("Maria Pepa" is my wife's account name :)
Clearly this live and rare footage defines that Bass fiddler Paul Jackson was an amazing upper hand master of his instrument neck, but even so in my view were two additionally high upper neck register greats, formerly train musicians Verdine white of EWF, second that madman a little while back Charles Mingus whom I heard destroyed a $20,000 hand made Upright because he often clashed with other bandmembers. They say Mingus was awesome but sometimes he became pyschotic when things didn't go his way. I have the pleasure of being born the same day as Mingus only only many years later.
My dope!
+aldino AKA MrGoDisco First time i see some one give creds to the GAP BAND's Magicians Holiday album! You my friend with your avatar are just so true funky one can be!

Man I was just listening to Art of the Fugue contrapunctus lV J.S. Bach gotta love You Tube.
ALPHONSE can't reach the syncopated bonanza that HARVEY and especially MIKE did back then, but who cares! This is some serious jam and all this is thanks to a guy named HERBIE HANCOCK!
+Mats Nilsson
I agree!
@smdelorme4 THANKS A MILLION!!!
legend,,,
RIP PAUL
@spercoco I'm both a studio and live drummer! Harvey and Mike were playing drums with Herbie before I played with Herbie. I'm on Herbie Hancock's stido recordings 1980 MONSTER album/CD, 1981 MAGIC WINDOWS album , 1980 MR. HANDS, & a 1978 direct to disc album we recorded in Japan called DIRECT STEP. Herbie Hancockis playing keyboards on my BY ALL MEANS album/CD and MORNING SUN album/CD!

Rip Paul
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽❤❤❤
@alphonsemouzon It's all in the hat! So two questions if you care to answer:
1) Why was Harvey Mason and/or Mike Clarke on the studio recordings but here you're with them? Are they studio drummers and you're more of a live drummer for hire or is it more covoluted?
2) Just listened to a tune Carbon Dioxide off one of your albums and after about a minute intro at about 1:12 you go into a jam that I'm counting 5 to. I want to get a copy of this and play to it. Any tips?
Wish Wah Wah Watson was there.
That is Headhunters Plus.
Nice ..direct step crew
Alphonse could not only reach the syncopations that Harvey and Mike laid down with Herbie, but could surpass them. That wasn't what Herbie wanted with this band as he was looking for more of a straight, danceable groove with this band.
Grande goduria musicale
So true.....mrpicky510
-uncle Mouzon dady the king...
Hey Alphonse Mouzon, the poor mans James Levi .
Is it me or they're clapping on the 1 and 3?
The video must be out of sync, right?
I don't think so, at 1:24 the drummer hits the crash as in the audio so it should be in sync.
what is that grover Washington thing? wow
Grover played much cleaner than that. That’s Maupin.
Paul was so slim & trim back then. He's a whale now but that boy can sure play some funky-ass bass!
Alphonse has very serious issues healthwise. This is the page to help save him
