  • In this video we put a Turbo on the 60's go kart! What we needed to do was make a turbo manifold, oil system, and electrical system to make sure the turbo could run completely autonomously, that way when we hook it up to the engine, we would know that there were no issues on the turbo side of things.
    Before we began the install we filmed some awesome driving footage to get a preliminary test so we could compare before and after the turbo was installed.
    Thanks for watching and be sure to stay tuned for this thing making some boost!

    The problem with putting a turbo on a single cylinder is... there isn't an exhaust stroke every intake stroke. That's why 4 cylinder and above work the best for turbo's. To compensate, you need a real small exhaust turbine and chamber that has a lot of back pressure to keep the turbine spooled up during the intake stroke on a single cylinder. You'd get way more power out of a turbine style belt/chain driven super charger.

    With such a small turbo you need a oil restecter and mettle or AN lines because those plastic lines will melt when the oil gets to hot and when the turbo gets up to temp as well you should get a oil pressure gauge with a speed controller for the oil pump to control the oil pressure or you will blow out the seals

    MIT published an article a few years back on turbo charging single cylinder engines. Google it. You need to add an air capacitor in between the turbo and carb to maintain boost. Basically a steel cylnder with a reed valve on the inlet. MIT even gives a equation for calculation volume of the capacitor.

    a turbo like that one with a journal bearing needs a oil restrictior as too much pressure will blow it out the seals. Might want to do some research to be safe guys...

    • @BuildBreakRepeat
      @BuildBreakRepeat  Před 5 lety +8

      Yeah, that’s why we went with a diesel transfer pump, it’s very low pressure but we’ll look into how much it needs exactly. It stopped smoking after we flipped the inlet and outlet though.

    • @aaronc09hdfxd
      @aaronc09hdfxd Před 5 lety +1

      Build Break Repeat you also need a vent in the oil system on the return side.

    • @joakim680
      @joakim680 Před 5 lety +6

      Restictors should generally not be used on journal bearing turbos, ball bearing turbos need restrictors though.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 Před 5 lety +3

      Agreed restrictors in general are a bodge when applied to journal bearing turbos. They actually require oil pressure to function properly in the same way as cam/crank journals. (It will function with lower pressure but be less efficient and wear faster). It might be a dodgy ebay turbo from the start, but I think it's possibly a combination of running the pump with the turbo stationary (the seals are a labyrinth type that uses the rotation to force oil back in) and having a sealed oiling system as well as maybe reverse feeding it to begin with. I know not many have seen good success with single cylinder turbo setups but I think it's possible to make boost, just far less efficiently than with multi cylinder engines, or a mechanically driven supercharger.

    • @josephu8327
      @josephu8327 Před 5 lety +1

    A bigger drain line might help the oil stop pushing out of the seals. And or a larger vented reservoir. Any backlog of oil increases your chance of leaking. Turbos oil drains are designed to drain into a crankcase, into an open air void that is vented to atmosphere. Without any stops in between. Backed up oil pushes out seals.

    So you didn't connect the exhaust tube in the turbo and the Intake tube in the turbo so its suppose to do a air and exhaust compression which would make more AIR GET sucked in and more air being shot out. So in the combustion chamber your valves will receive more AIR with more OIL and same amount of gas which would make the EXTRA POWER by the compression ratio improving significantly.

    The cooler should go before the pump the hot oil in that pump cant be good for that plastic pump ,what is the org purpose for that pump it sure dose not look like it's made for hot oil . i now thats not how u should run it but that setup maybe.u might want add a little length and to try to taper ,gradually reduce the exhaust size down before the turbo .the lengtt will give u pressure and the tapper will give u air velocity and help with back press. try adding air capacitor on the intake side its just big space like a plenum on a car it will hold some pressure when the intake vavle is closed .

  • @dannovic
    @dannovic Před 5 lety

    The oil pan needs to be way bigger and maybe have a breather on top so there's no pressure in the tank. The oil obviously needs to enter the turbo with pressure, but has to go down without any back pressure (inside that little tank). If theres any kind of restriction in the oil flow out of the turbo it will just pass the seals

    Man, I wish someone that had a clue how turbos work would give this a try. I don't have time right now but everything you you're doing wrong and how to fix it I commented on when cars and cameras tried to do theirs. Short version on your oil problems- most turbos don't have a real oil seal so when you force too much oil in them it will leak out both sides of the shaft (your dripping out the intake). You need to seriously restrict down the inlet (how much depends on how much oil pressure you have.

    You need a oil feed restrictor it's just a fitting with a small hole in the inside for oil if it's not enough oil drill the hole a bit bigger you can use brass pipe fittings and tap and die for threads in the turbo hole for oil because I have s better than using a gasket because they can leak. If you get to much oil pressure in the cheap turbo or even a good turbo it will get blow by and dammage the turbo for real!
