- This is the drums-only track...for the video with music follow this link: • Bring Me The Horizon -...
I really put a lot of emphasis in mixing my drum sound to get as powerful of a sound as possible to match Matt Nicholls' saturated drum sound on the album. I tuned the snare drum low and I love the low end sound of the 8-inch deep DW steel snare. I also used my acoustic drums to trigger electronic elements from Ultrabeat drums in Logic in the quiet section from 2:22 to 2:54 to match the feel of the original song.
I really enjoy playing new songs I've never attempted in genres that are not entirely within my comfort zone. There are aspects of this song that didn't come easily to me, most notably the snare patterns interspersed with the 16th note hi-hat groove starting at 0:27, the double bass pattern in the breakdown section at 1:17, and the quick transitions back and forth between fills and tough grooves like at 1:30.
So I'm duly impressed with Nicholls' drum composition. He put a lot of thought into it and came up with some impressive grooves, fills and transitions that provide the backbone for BMTH's signature sound.
That's why I enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone - I always learn something new gain a new appreciation of things that I may have taken for granted or underestimated before.
Thanks for watching, and as always, I love to hear your feedback.

Jesus fucking christ. You're absolutely amazing. One of my favourites.
Why did you turn your snare into an AK-47? HAHAHAHAHA
it sounds pretty killing on the actual record, for me tho..
You should post all "drum onlys" for all the covers you hvae done man. that would be awesome
Far better verison then the vid with the music. Great playing again
The ring on that snare is INSANE!!!
aw man, that snare sounds awesome!
They're not triggered, they're obviously mic'd. However, consistent with almost all of recorded drums in this generation, the sounds are mixed with replaced drums.
Don't know if you take requests but I personally would love to see you tackle some Gojira. Try their song The Art of Dying or Liquid Fire. You have some of the best sounding drums on YT I'd love to hear them with the drums only.
Best drum cover bro nice 5 out of 5
Make it look so easy brother!
It is!
Amazing work John !
Like Derek said, I supplemented the acoustic sounds with samples. But the samples are my own drums (except for the middle part with obvious electronic samples). I recorded each of my drums in isolation and made samples from them. That way I can compress them without all of the background noise also becoming more prevalent in the mix. Then I drop those samples behind the actual recording. It allows me to emphasize the crap out of certain drums, in this case the snare and the kick.
Good as always!
i love your sounds.
Awesome! Great work!

Hey man, i was wondering, could you do a drums only cover of the song, someone somewhere (extended version) by asking alexandria? Me and my friend are playing guitar at our talent show and it would be great to have a drum track playing along with us. Thanks!!!

Sounds amazing! but it sounds like the snare is resonating too much. I'm not a drummer so that might not be the right way to put it haha.
