This song has been on my wish-list for a cover pretty much since the first time I heard it. The only thing that always held me back, though, was the double-bass madness. It's not incredibly fast or complicated, but I absolutely never practice single-strokes on the kick, which is why I am sincerely not good at that, at all. I do some bursts and patterns using heel-toe (which is the main reason I started playing double-bass in the first place) but I never practice straight up consistent single strokes.
Here's the crazy part: the BPM of this song is such that it was JUST fast enough to be out of my comfortable range when I used single strokes (I'd hold it consistently for about 5 seconds, then I would just tense up and look supremely spastic) but also JUST slow enough to my out of my comfortable range when using heel-toe. What the flip?! So I practiced it for a week or two, spending time every day trying to get my singles faster, as well as getting my doubles SLOWER.. which is a weird concept, but I had to be able to control the slower speed when playing doubles. After a lot of practicing, the heel-toe control improved before the single stroke speed did, so I opted for heel-toe.. much to the dismay of my shins.
Most 16th note kick patterns you hear in this cover was played using heel-toe, except for a few quick bursts of single strokes here and there. All extended 16th note segments were done using heel-toe (after which my shins caught fire).
All of that said: playing along to a hard rock track is fun beyond measure. Minimal ghost notes, just straight up power and drive. LOVE IT.
Also: this is the only track in The Quadrum Series (and my first cover EVER!) where I used a different snare drum than the other songs in the series. My main snare was tuned quite high and responsive for the other tracks, but I wanted a more beefy tone for this song. The snare that I used is Neil Peart's personal Snakes & Arrows from right here at Drum Channel. I've used this snare in many places (on 8 of the 11 songs on my Ventura Lights' debut album, Way Up Here) and I absolutely love it.

Holy shit, seeing Corbus play that part the rev sings over and played live at the same time... Its amazing how he could do both at once. Especially the first time his vocals come in the song, and he played it perfect live everytime I saw them... RIP The Rev foREVer
i remember a gig way back in manchester england, he was fuckin blastin away with a look on his face as if he was on a stroll at a carnival just takin in the sights, every now and then findin time to point through the kit with his stick at us gawpers at the barrier. he made it look so easy

John Schofield you know junna bro?
Flawless performance, and fantastic creative use of the cymbal set-up. Not to mention the production, which I know he works hard on. To get acoustic drums to sound this good is a completely separate skill in itself.
Great job, the Rev would be proud!

The many extra things you add to the song make it soo much better its awesome
1:44 I don't know if its in the song, but that fill/transition, what ever you call it, was just, oh....*on my knees just not being able to describe it. just just beautiful
Facts
It's in the song
No doubt hes a great cover/player for sure… but the Rev did this live and on the album. Cuz its THE REV obviously
Love the use of heel-toe on the double bass notes. Very unique, extremely technical and talented drummer!
I am back after a couple of weeks to listen to this, this just gives me the chills
😤🤌✨
Bcs of this cover my life changed totally. This cover turn my life into metal. Seriously.
Thanks cobus.
Just read the description. And that's why, in my opinion, The Rev was the best drummer. He's able to do crazy complicated stuff and super simple stuff as well in the same song. He was such an amazing artist but I wish he was still around. R.I.P. The Rev. Good job, Cobus. (As always. ;D )
Also got to take into consideration that the Rev does a lot of singing too, mainly as back up vocals but still.
And he also doesn't have those weird head mounted mics. He uses a regular microphone beside him. So when he does have to sing, he has a huge ass drum set to memorize from muscle memory while drumming complex parts.
You obviously aren't familiar with Nearl Peart If you think The Rev Is better.
Thebiggestbeast111 You obviously aren't familiar with basic reading comprehension. He was simply comparing their drumming skills as being similar despite being drummers from entirely different genres, not saying REV was better in any way.
"The REV actually reminds me a lot of Neil Peart"
I was replying to the original comment, moron.
Cobus honestly man this cover is wonderful to watch, you nailed it accents, fills, flair... everything. Awesome dude would love to see you hit up some more metal.

Um dos melhores cover de bateria do Avenged! 👏🔥🤘
This reminds me of my younger days where I was playing A7X for 6 hours a day, perfecting The Rev’s polyrhythms, chops and techniques. Then kids got older, bills got in the way and I had to sell all my drums. Watching this made me emotional because I miss it so much. Heck if a job!!!
I think that The Rev is definitely one of the best drummers out there among all the other great drummers. I can't say that there is a "best" drummer out there because there will always be a bigger, better, newer, younger, whatever drummer out there. I can say that there are great and fantastic drummers that are great in their own right. All this "best drummer in the world" controversy is just crap. There will never REALLY be a best drummer in the world, like there will never be a best human in the world. I love the cover that Cobus did, it does what The Rev had worked hard on and it honors him. =} Good Job Cobus. I really do enjoy your covers a lot.
Swear I've watched this video at least 50 times so good well done
This was one of the nicest covers I’ve ever seen I remember when I saw this for the first time
Man this was so good and love that (RUSH) snare 🙌🏻 keep killing it.
dude's crazy,he's not doing a normal RLRL 16th on kick, he did double strokes with his feets..
yeah, his foot.. watch earlier vid that show his foot
+Anjas Fajaryan he does heel toe method, it's the easy way out of doing anything difficult with double base. Most people do it but it doesn't sound good, his at least sounds good
+FendedxOff For the most part.
I'd really prefer he'd keep the natural sticking--err, kicking? Whatever, RLRL. Dynamically, a lot of his heel-toe 16ths came out RrLlRrLl instead of a nice even RRLLRRLL or, of course, RLRLRLRL.
I'm definitely not any better at it than he is (by any means).
+Jason Waite He totally wimped out on the double bass part at the end. On the original recording, the drummer sounds like he's kicking snot out of his kicks - while Cobus keeps the pulse, he plays a broken pattern and it really seems obvious that he isn't that fast with double bass nor does he have a powerful stroke. Would have liked to him do the double kick part as it otherwise sounded amazing.
+Anjas Fajaryan i know some of those words
I dont know how this is the first time I am every seeing your drumming, but dude, you killed it! SIC drumming bro, you nailed it!
The random bouts of aggression in your face make it so much better.
The cymbals sound freaking amazing!!
The dude did paradiddles and double strokes right after another....on the DOUBLE BASS. He’s in another level.
dude, once you learn heel-toe (double stroke technique) on pedal, you definitely will love it. very useful and versatile pedal technique.
i personally became super addicted to play my drum again after learning heel-toe (or known as double stroke).
I read paradiddies as paratitties and now I want to cry😔
0:53 you mean this?
M Iqbal Akbar I’ve learnt it, but I’m trying to get it to Bonham bass triplet speed and it’s hard. Any suggestions?
Xtra gum basically
Hi Cobus, my 7 yr old (little drummer) Alexander is your 750K subscriber! He started learning the drums at school last September, he was still 6. He plays in his bedroom, and thrashes the hell out of his kit. Thanks for your vids, he loves them :)
Remember first time watching this back in 2014. I had no idea how he could move his feet like that to get a double bass as i did not know it back then, but heel toe is a sick way to get double bass. Gives a better rythm if u ask me. Kinda cool coming back here 6 years later As back then i was not good on drums watching this being an amazed 16 year old to now being 22 years old and can play this myself. Still love this cover over alot of the other from back then. High quality audio and video and the small mixups adding some extra flair and not just the normal way. Love it
This guy takes me through portals , like of emotions as such. Cobus is the best cover channel hands down swear down m8😂 sends me on rolercosters and shit mate like when I was a child 😲 ohhhhhh hhhuruhh 😵
Just wanna say I'm glad I stumbled across this today. Epic skills man!
Dude you fucking rock!! Congrats!! This is how every musician should play its instrument, with this much feeling. 100% skill & effort 👍👍
I love kicking my skins to this song, the Rev did justice. First time here, you did a great job, but not commenting on that, it's a pretty easy song to track, but the best is the sound you have. Outstanding balance, tone, micing and capture. A+ recording...
this is my favorite Avenged song. and this is my favorite cover. i watch this cover everyday. i strive to be as good as you
Omg this is beautiful, you make it look so natural...
I hope Sevenfold picks you as their new drummer now that Arins out. You always rock their songs!

The first time i ever heard ax7 was this video, and of course it had to be a drum cover so here i an 5 years later coming back to watch this as a stress reliever before my gig.
My one year old loves drum videos. Thanks for the clean version of the song! Sounds great

Very creative. Sounds good man. The rev would be proud.
your bass drums are felt right in the chest its so good
Searched up "best drum covers ever to 2000s rock" and this was the first video
Still probably the best drum cover for this song anywhere!!!
Never boring to see your show
2022 LEGEND!!!!!!!! ALWAYS LOVE TO WATCH THIS OLD STUFF... No one like him like rigtht now
monstro!!! toca demaaais!
My god... This guy is incredible. I was skeptical when I found this video because there's almost nobody who can play drums like The Rev but this guy blew my mind!! I definitely wouldn't mind seeing him replace Arin Ilejay
Arin already a official member of A7x he won't be replaced unless arin quit a7x
I'm fully aware of that. Arin is a good drummer, but if he did quit, I wouldn't be upset to see this guy become the drummer. He has some real skill when it comes to hitting that double bass
i think Arin's double bass is better, Cobus' single stroke is slow so he uses heel-toe to make it faster
Good point. I never said he is better than Arin, I'm just saying he could replace him if needed. I'm still impressed with his talent
Definitely the video that needs to be watched once in a while!
I’ve never heard this song before. The drumming here is pretty amazing.
I've never been too good at the straight singles on double bass either. I'm the same where as soon as I'm past 140ish bpm my legs completely stiffen up and start being all twitchy and inconsistent! It's a massive pain in the ass! So I might start doing the heel-toe doubles now. Seems a very nice way to get around this problem. Anyone else got the same problem as me?
Yeah I feel you actually. Was never the best at them. Might give that sneaky lil double technique he was doing a shot too! But yeah, it also depends on your pedal for sure. I had a bunch of trouble with a PDP peice o shit and the second I changed to a 9000 I was miles better at double bass.
yeah! i have the exact same problme :/ haha
That's because you got the legs too laid when you play your seat is maybe too high .
I'm learning the heel-toe technique now for 2 months, it's a bit hard until you really know how it works, and don't expect too much too fast. After 2 months I'm now at around 120 bpm with my right foot, my left foot is hangin around at 10bpm :D
*****
I wish i had a double kick to practice with. I can use one but sicne i dont own one i got no techniques lol. I can slide with my right foot pretty ok now and consistently but i wish i had double kick to practice slide and heel toe with BOTH my legs :/
RIP Jimmy Sullivan
One of the best intros ever made! I love this song
Okay this is so good damn
