Color: Rubies are part of the Corundum species, which is Allochromatic, meaning, in its finest form, a Ruby is colorless. The ruby’s red-pink hue is actually a result of chromium and iron impurities. Rubies come in a variety of colors, from a deep brown-red to pink tones, purple tones, brown tones, and orange tones.
Pigeon Blood, which really refers to a pigeon's eye, is the most sought-after hue in rubies. However, Rubies also come in pink, purple, brown, and orange tones. When a Ruby grows excessively too pink, it becomes a sapphire.
Clarity: This refers to the presence of inclusions (imperfections) in the gem. Ideally, you want a Ruby that is eye clean, meaning inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. If a ruby is loop clean (no visible imperfections through a loop), or microscope clean (no visible imperfections through a microscope), then it is definitely synthetic.
Identifying inclusions in your gemstone is important because they indicate where it’s from and whether it’s natural or not.
Cut: The cut of a Ruby is crucial to its value. A poorly cut ruby may contain windows, which are areas that are too shallow, allowing light to flow through the stone without reflecting back. If you can see your skin through your stone, then it is not properly cut.
Carat: This relates to the stone's weight. It is relatively easy to find 1 - 2ct Rubies, but anything larger than that becomes more difficult, which heavily affects the price.
Ruby Treatments
Heat treatment: This improves the color of the Ruby, making it more desirable, because such hues in Rubies are exceptionally rare. Heat treatment is typical, and unless otherwise mentioned, a jeweler will always presume a Ruby has been heated. According a certified GIA/FGA gemologist, “90% of rubies on the market are heat treated, and you’re not even gonna know it.”

Laurianne is actually very witty and cute with an amazing accent. Not to mention incredible knowledge. Thanks for the great lesson. Much love to you both!
I collect emeralds and recently got into rubies. That video was very informative. Subscribed, thanks.
Thanks for the sub! I'm glad it could help:)
I love these segments. I wanna be a gemologist in my next life!
Ruby is one of the beautiful gems in the precious stone ❤❤❤❤
Appreciate to both of you for a good knowledge of rubies.
Until GIA /Gublin borrows Home depots paint spectrometer, draws a line for color; The difference between a pinkish red ruby & redish pink sapphire is? Who's buying, & who's selling.😉
Well, fine ruby is much rarer than a fine classic kashmir sapphire. Ruby need high amount of chromium for its fluo/glow. However too much chromium will turn the color too pink. It need iron to shift the color toward "purer" red. However, too much iron will reduce the fluo/glow.
So it need very high chromium and just the right amount of iron. Throughout my gem collecting experience, i ve only seen less than a dozen rubies that i consider pigeon blood. Usually it fall in AGL's color rating of 1.5 or 2.0. Never seen a 1.0 tho
Great video
So interesting!
I got much information from this video ❤
Last week I collected one Afghanistan ruby. No heat no treat 1 carat but superb and super rare specially in ruby
good morning girls And well, I will be taking Burmese rubys from my collection as well as from other parts of the world. but I want to mention I just uploaded a short video to CZcams of a Ruby Pigeon Blood Cabochon from Myanmar of a great 24 carats being heated. and its color looks great. You will see it, it is clean to the eye, it has very small inclusions that cannot be seen at all only with a microscope, I hope you like it. and I will upload more videos of more huge rubys of about 60 carats or more and from there there are smaller ones but enjoy this short video I hope you like it thanks girls

Hello hai from srilanka how are you, ❤
❤thanks GIA ilove RUBI🎉
So if I have a corundom crystal that is bright light green from the side, and fire engine red along it's length, is it a ruby or a sapphire ?
I happen to have two rough aquamarine gem quality stones, when you hold the straight up they're green but when you turn and hold them longwise, they turn to blue. What's the best way to cut them?
I have a ruby,it’s the size of my thumb and it’s cut in the heart shape. It’s bright red blood and transparent,it’s quite heavy and when I put it in the sunlight, it casts blue, green and yellow color. How much do you think it worth,if it’s genuine ? Thanks
Rubies are great
Good morning ma'am .

Hi ,is it possible to sell Burmese Ruby to her concern
Do you buy natural burmese ruby, no heated no treated, Royal ruby
I have natural ruby but how to sell?
Had an heirloom ring that had been passed down through generations before my son stole it to give to some girl he wanted to date. Then she supposedly lost it. It had 4 Burmese rubies, and on each side of them were blue opals, then seed pearls. The stones were so beautiful. Reminded me of cranberry juice. It had been in the family for at least 5 generations. Its amazing how much bigger womens fingers have gotten over the years. By the time i got it i could only wear it on my pinky finger. And now it is lost forever. Broke my heart.
PS. The girl never did take him seriously. As far as I know she never did date him.
Oh no that's terrible! I'm sorry you lost your ring. :(

hi

What I have is rough corundum how can I get in contact with a buyer
What is an intrusion what does that mean in gemstones?
Yes inclusions are the little imperfection within the gemstone.
@@DominiqueFlux ok 👍 thank you for the feedback can u see them with bare eyes or do you need some kinda flourescent special light ?
Ami nite chai. Ruby pathor. Plz contact bengladesh
How about star ruby ?
Star sapphires come in all the different colors of corundum, but they have a tubular like molecular structure that regular rubies/sapphires don't have, that give it that 'cats eye' effect or 'star' effect. But they aren't transparent (like regular corundum gems), although they can be translucent.
@@Bullen_3the stars seen in rubies and sapphires are due to reflections from rutile needles oriented at 120⁰ offsets and aligned within the crystal lattice of the corundum.
The higher refractive index of rutile allows for the brighter reflection of these inclusions to focus in what appears to be a mobile star pattern that moves across the stone as the light source is shifted.
The phenomena causing cat's eye and star patterns in corundum are not caused in the same way that the cat's eye effects found in aquamarines and tourmalines are, in tourmalines and aquamarines the silky sheen can often be attributed to the presence of hollow growth tubes within the materials, but, these hollow growth tubes are not seen in corundum, distinct differences between these somewhat similar looking phenomena and their causes should not be confused.

Pigeon blood? Why such an ugly name? That's worse than saying a woman has dishwater blonde hair.
Would like to have bought one of those lighted bases with magnifier on it but you said the name of it so fast I didn't understand it. Lol.
