- This is my second visit to this car, and this time we get to see its interior & under the bonnet. The video has two parts. Part one talks about the Mazda Roadpacer in general, and Part two is a walk-around of this particular car.

A teacher at my school in New Zealand had one of these back in the early 90s... I remember us wondering what the hell it was since we were all into Holden V8s at the time.
+nikolaiwilson a roadpacer here in new zealand? that's pretty awesome.. i'd love to see one of these in person
Yeah I know what you mean. I was at school in Auckland in the early '90s and recall seeing one or two Roadpacers around. We had a 1974 Holden Kingswood Ute, which was a reliable daily workhorse. What colour was your teacher's Roadpacer?
From everything I've read of the Roadpacer, the story starts thus:
In the early 70s, Holden wanted to experiment with rotary engines. The best rotary builders in the world at the time being Mazda, Holden approached Mazda management, and asked if they could make a deal. Mazda asked for a set of body dies for the HJ Premier, and Holden got their rotaries.
Holden wanted to power Toranas with rotary engines as another option in the engine lineup, but the project was a failure. I have no idea what Mazda were thinking when they dropped a rotary into the Roadpacer. They could have taken Toyota's option and bought some European 6 cylinder design. They could have asked Holden for an engine to power it. They could have made a quad chamber rotary, any of these ideas would have done better. It's the reason why only about 600 of them were ever made.
It's ironic that the engine bay looks so crowded. In its original form, there's so much room in the engine bay that you could sit in the engine bay while you work on it. A small block Chevy V8 will fit without any modifications other than springs. A big block will fit with some minor modifications to the inner guards.
Mechknight73 Wow. Thanks for all that info. Appreciated. :)
Mazda are the only rotary builders
Only PRESNT DAY rotary builders. Look up the NSU RO80. They were built before Mazda had a go at rotary engines, but full marks to them for perfecting it. Holden never went ahead with making a rotary powered anything as their research proved it unfeasible to power Toranas with rotary engines
+Imsupanova nope felix wankel invented the engine, and nsu was one of the first companys here in germany where put an rotary engine in their cars
Although NSU rapidly went downhill in Australia because of the company's "no questions asked" engine replacement warranty. If an NSU pulled up next to another NSU in traffic, the drivers would hold up a number of fingers to each other; how many engines they've had replaced. As you can imagine, they went bust very quickly because of it.
Glad you liked it. Actually. the first part of this video was the first ever Wasabicars video I uploaded. Seeing as it was pretty light-on with regard to information, I thought I'd put some effort in and this was the result.
I've found something on Wikipedia.
Only 799 Pieces of this were build. I think it's a really rare Car
That RX-7 next to it is lookin preety good too
wow, the motor looks tiny in there. looks like you can fit two rotarys in there. i remember when i was a kid a guy in my town had a 70's nova with a rotary. i thought that was nuts!! this reminds me of it. never seen this mazda before, thanks for sharing this one!!
It is, and I'm very happy to have seen two. I'm always on the lookout for these. :)
I have seen two. It's a great HX Holden. When Holden released HQ 173 and 202 1bbl red engines which in Trimatic form wouldn't break 20 seconds quarter miles, then Mazda knew they could wack a 13B in it and do just fine. Despite the paltry 147 Newton Metre or 110 lb-ft torque below 4000 rpm in a 3100 pound car, it drives exactly like a New Zealand spec VH or VK Commodore Royale 1892 cc Trimatic with the old 138 Nm or 102 lb-ft XT5 four cylinder in a 1220 kilo or 2650 pound car. Same torque to weight. In fact, more like a 3100 pound 1978 2.3 liter US Fox Fairmont or Mercury Zephyr Station Wagon with an auto. (Nice write up in AMC by the way!)
An amazing piece of Mazda Rotary history, it's a bit of a shame they didn't give the engine a bit more thought being in a big Holden & all, they could have designed an early version of the 13B Turbo, a low boost carby setup would have made a great difference to this very kool ride hey, still awesome tho :)
I have driven these and they go real well. Has as much power as the Holden HJ with a 202cu in 6 cylinder engine but uses a bit more fuel to do it. These go real good. Very very smooth motor car.
And that reminds me, I've got to go back & shoot a vid of that RX-7!
Keep coming back to this video every year or so, for some strange reason. 🤔
Did you see the blue Roadpacer behind the fence I did a video on? For mine, a much better video. But, hey. I'm stoked you keep going back to that one. :)
There's a link in the description to the Wasabicars site but there's not so much info there. And sadly, there aren't many surviving examples of the car. I'm sure I'll do another video on tis car in the future so I'll try to include some good info on it. :)
Yes, some of the footage in this video was in fact my first ever upload to this channel. There had always been a few vids that I thought could be a lot better and this was one. As I had extra footage of the engine & interior I thought, what the hay (hey)?
I remember reading a review on these when they were new and Mazda wasn't impressed by the diff noise from the archaic banjo diff. Those toggle switches/ joysticks were holden items and used an inner and outer cable, but they must have been hard to use on wing mirrors.
Nice camera work ♪
Thank you for Your UPLorD.
WasabiCars,
This is not the only time in the 1970's when a Japanese manufacturer imported a Holden body - Isuzu did the same thing at roughly the same time with the HQ Statesman De Ville, and called it, not surprisingly "Isuzu Statesman De Ville". Approximately 250 were sold in Japan between 1973 and 1976. Have you ever seen one of them?
+Graham Clayton wow you learn something new everyday
Hey, Graham. Funnily enough I did. I wonder if you may have already seen it though. czcams.com/video/mRrm1SHNsfs/video.html
This is a very interesting holden/mazda. do you know how much they sell for?
The Holden version of this body depending on the model had a 202ci straight 6, 253 ci v8 or 308 v8 if memory serves me. So yeah a 1.3l even though it's a rotory seems small.
Devolution RC.
173 ci 6 cylinder also.
A 13B rotary was a bit more powerful than a 1300cc piston engine of the times. Closer to the old 202 red motor.
@@JBofBrisbane yes definitely! Rotaries are an amazing engine for the small package
You know, I actually went back last weekend but both cars were locked up. :( I WILL get it! ... one day.
What a mutt of a car, a G.M product with a Mazda rotary! One would have figured that they would have tried that with an Aussie Ford before a Holden.
One for the Opel Gang. Rare Rare Rare !! To the bitter end !! And: Platz da, Mazda !!
I see. Thank you. :)
Ouch. When my VK Calais was getting 17~18L per 100kms, I was pissed.
fuck imagine that in todays prices
It still the first time I have heard about one of these
Very rare and overlooked Mazda
Rotary engines sure got around. Ford built a few mustangs with rotary engines back in the mid 60's.
where did you get that info from you need a link.
This would be worth good money in Australia
I drove one in Perth many years ago. Super soft suspension & ultra light steering mean't the 80km/h speed buzzer was a necessity
Cool cross-brand Frankenstein there. That 13b just looks ridiculous in such a huge engine bay. Bet this big thing was pretty slow even in 1970's terms. Glad to see that they're looking after the interior. Paint can be fixed.
I love this car, so rare and so weird :D
I want to build this into some game some day
Yeah, I love it too. Too bad this one's moved on. Not sure where it is now
So much in the way of GM parts on this car.....Wheel Covers were Chevy Wheel covers with a Mazda insert, the power window control is right off any GM car with four power windows....lots of little things say GM all over it. REally neat!
Yep. Even the windscreen washer water bottle has a GM sticker on it
Interesting how they grafted the RX4 reverse lights into the Holden HX bumper. :-?
I remember these cars as taxis in Fiji in the late 80s and early 90s.
Ah, but surely those would have come from Holden and powered by the inline 6 cylinder. Same body, headlights, grille, etc... of course
@@wasabicars yes they did.
After fitting the rotary and realising that power to weight ratio was a little crooked, they then decided to chuck all the luxury options in, so SOMEONE would but it.
Buy*
Jamie Williamson Not too many did buy it. Shame, I'd love to see more of these at the local car-shows.
Hear in Australia we have the best cars ( well had )
A really interessting Car. Where can I find more about it?
whaaaattttt....that crazy dude.. its seems like Holden Kingswood HJ..
Holden Premier HJ.
I enjoy watching you're Mazda videos. I own a Mazda 3 in Canada, do you know if Mazda 3 has a rotary engine like the RX-8?
Mazda 3? There has to be an "R" in its name. E.g. RX-8, etc...
Is this a factory built Holden Mazda combo rotary is it or is it a hybrid Island Home manufactured rotary l bastard Holden
you would definitely know if it was rotary
Haha it definitely does not, it has a standard Inline 4.
Yeah, green is a classic color for that car.
wow!
I am looking at all the people criticizing Mazda for putting a anemic rotary to power the big Holden body and I cannot help but to wonder how they'd feel if they found out Mazda used the exact same rotary to power a mini bus, lol.
Exactly! Lol
So were these cars sent to from aussie japan as semi-assembled, then put together in Hiroshima with the rotary engines?
Very interesting that they opt for a small fuel guzzler engine in such a big car body. Similar sized Nissans would probably have 1.8L at least up to 2.5L.
That'd be them. Though, there weren't that many. Less than 1,000 if I recall correctly.
Hey daniel this car looks like a chevrolet turn rotary or holden for your side of the pond.
Was that a collaboration between both car makers? I see a lot of gm parts in it.
The only part of the collaboration Holden did was to give them a set of body dies and moulds. They traded them for some rotary engines to experiment on
Willmmer West nice to meet an ass hole from down under!
not in good shape but still nice to look at! :) the first minute of this vid made it a bit more educational! XD
What's the story with these 2 Mazdas? Were they just in for servicing or restoration? I'm guessing whoever owns the Roadpacer also owns the RX-7?
Yeah, they are owned by the garage. They wheel them out every day.
Thanks. They should be in a museum really, given their rarity. But if they're maintained to a decent standard, that's fair enough I guess.
Interestingly when the Buick Century was sold in Japan the name was changed to Luxus and then later to Regal.
Another thing different from the holden is the gear selector is on the wheel.
reminds me of a 1970s buick regal coupe.
Bring back and restore. You’ll make a fortune
That would be awesome if they'd sell, if I weren't broke, if I had somewhere to store it in the interim. Sigh
Weird... I remember your earlier video about this car.
cool
UP主さん、初めまして。現在日本国内で販売している書類つきのロードぺーサーをご存知でしたら教えて頂けないでしょうか?
Yeah!!! I want to This!!! Where is it???
Tomoyuki Watanabe This is in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. Wasabicars cares. :)
WasabiCars Fukuoka? far a way. this is been at there Now???
Oh ~! Rotary2top♪かっこいい!
This Holden/Mazda was sold in japan as a Mazda
Certainly was. Crazy to think that as someone who had always wanted to see one of these in Mazdas that I would end up living nearby two of them!
Sure, they're crappy but I grew up with them and I've got a few favourites amongst them.
one was for sale about 5 years ago for $3000 running & i should have bought it.
I think so too. People are so much more aware of more obscure cars nowadays. So many people are asking me to track one down for them.
Very rare mazda
From what I hear the engine was picked before the body was. The whole idea was to show off there shiny, new rotary. That's what I hear, anyway.
A rotary in a Nova?? That does sound odd.
they arent crappy, they are just built big and simple so they are able to handle rough australian roads and be easily repaired/serviced,
try driving a non australian/american car on 70s era aussie country roads, it will get ripped to shreds because its just not built for it
Well that’s the same as my HJ interior colour
it must be rare, this is the first ive seen one
I've seen just two with my own eyes. I can't imagine there'd be more than 10 of these left in existence.
Sorry, it's been a while. A Santa reference?
The front looks suspiciously like a 1971 Chevy Impala. During those years Chevy wanted to use a Wankel engine for some of their cars, including the Vega and the Citation, but with disappointing fuel economy, they scrapped the idea. AMC wanted to use a Wankel for the Pacer, but the same result prevented them from doing so.
Holden was GM like chev. Total copy, just a bit smaller for auzzie market. You will see all the similarities in most auzzy cars, look at valiants & ford falcons etc,
right up to the newer stuff, which some are now auzzy copies in the us, holden commodores & pontiac G8. Very incestuous industry world over. Just import someone else's design and whack a new name on it
@@evltwin984 George Roberts from Pontiac designed the HQ Holden. It shares most of the Nova and Firebird cowl and chassis kicks, including the Bishops Kirby power steering design. , but the steering box is front mounted and it had a full coil spring rear suspension. No leaf springs in the back like the first and second generation Camaro and Firebird. So Way more advanced than the same US built uni body subframe F and A cars. The first HQ, HJ and HX cars from 1971 to 1977 were destroyed by the standard suspension settings, which had huge negative chamber independent front suspension. That got fixed when ex Opels engineer Peter Hanenburger gave it Firebird style Radial Tuned Suspension in the late 1977 HZ Holden. The Roadpacer missed out on RTS.
no idea if its against the rules there are a number of examples Mazda 323 and BMW 323i yea fine BMW put a i at the end still the same name thing is i don't know who had 323 first
They have been known to have fuel consumption of 26L per 100km! Can anyone name a car that has worse fuel consumption?? still love it though.
The in traffic or urban 0 to 50 mph use, the fuel consumption of any early 2 or 4 barrel 350 small block auto will be less than 10 US miles per gallon in traffic. Or try any 454, 455 or Big Block intermediate US car of the same time.
Lol. The grass is always greener on the other side.
この車はかなり貴重ですね!もしかしたら100台も残ってないかもしれない
私もそう思います。100台?10台しかないじゃない?
WasabiCars 返信ありがとうございます!まったくそのとおりです
I think the Toyota Century is a domestic only model. Just a guess. Is it even against the law though? Certainly it doesn't make sense to name your car after a competitor's car.
Im refer yo the condition of paint
Ah, I see. Surprisingly, of the three Mazda Roadpacers I’ve seen around Japan, this one is in the best condition
;-)
it looks like a 72 Impala by the front and a 70 Olds by the side, a Nova by the back and steering wheel....
Greg Whitbread And they will say a falcon is no where near as Australian as a Commodore.
Greg Whitbread I6 Falcons are very Australian.
Greg Whitbread Yeah :(
Greg Whitbread The Falcon was originally from the USA, then Australia built their own and kept making it.
Willmmer West No need to be a triggered wanker, he's just pointing out the similarities to American cars.
