What’s the “The Eagle” movie about?
In 140 A.D., during the time of the Roman Empire, a young centurion, Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum from Dear John and Step Up), attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the Ninth Roman Legion, which occurred twenty years earlier and in which his father was commander of the 1st cohort. To this end, Aquila travels to northern Britain with a Celtic slave, Esca (Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot and King Kong), who owes him his life. Both venture beyond Hadrian's Wall to Caledonia, where they are confronted by Pictish tribes. Aquila is determined to find the emblem of the legion that disappeared in Pictish territory along with his father, the Roman eagle. During his journey, Aquila meets a local tribe, the "seal people", and becomes their prisoner. Thanks to Esca, who pretended to betray him in order to deceive the seal people, Marcus recovers the eagle and the two men flee. The "seal people" set out in pursuit. A last battle takes place, Marcus has the unexpected support of the survivors of the 9th legion and, in company of Esca who became his friend, he can bring back the eagle to Rome. He is then offered to re-found the legion.

Wow that spear he used seemed really effective. Too bad they didn't all have one, plus a another three throwable ones strapped to their back.
i see what u did there, seems like someone forgot to turn on fire at will
Too bad? They were the agressors!
It was an enemy spear he picked up
Pillum *@@iancarnaby3898
They usally had, but in the book it's forbidden to have them and there are less on total, with more horses by the way, so they were very unexpected
So basically they used Testudo on something it's not meant to do and then stopped using it when facing ranged enemies. Instead, they retreated and broke formation which will make them even more vulnerable to enemy chariots.
I see a man that has also played "Total War Rome" lol, U are right tho kind useless to have half of ur men in the back not doing anything.

loosening the formation is actually a good thing to do when fighting chariots, elephants etc
@@neymarmessironaldo5881 that is if the loose formation is coordinated. Basically Romans will just loosen up their formation and let the chariots pass and kill the riders with javelins (I forgot the name sorry). In this scene it did happen (sort of) but they shouldn't have retreated and instead opened up their line and killed the chariot riders to prevent further casualties but instead they turned their backs and retreated which is a "look you can kill me now" sign for every cavalry ever. I don't really mind tho, the movie is entertaining and I liked it. I just like pointing out tactical mistakes lmao.

Loving the comments from all the experts in Roman fighting tactics.
To be honest, you don't even need to be an expert to know this scene is silly. You just need to have read a book or two on the Roman army.
As Arthur said you don't have to be an expert to recognise when something is stupid or unrealistic.
Also the Romans are one of the few examples in history whose battle tactics are very well documented. You don't have to do much research to figure out what they would have done here, the fact that the movie didn't bother is the issue.
I mean its kinda common knowlage if you are interested in the topic, but I agree. Many people here think they are historians and basically experts on the topic after they played TW: Rome 2 for 20 hours.
you have never played in rome II total war
I'm no expert in chivalry tactics but why did the tribesmen sound their horn when summoning their cavalry? They not only alerted the Romans but gave them time to run.
“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one @2:25, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ― Heraclitus
oh my... Hollywood sure loves showing off the Roman testudo formation... And how they always fail to understand when it is, and when it is not used... But no, that formation is only used when attacking, assaulting, sieging a fixed fortified/defended position or under ranged attack by arrows/slings.. It is never used in melee since it greatly lowers the effective close combat ability of all soldiers within the formation who are maintaining said formation... But I guess the wedge formation (which is the formation that would have been used) just doesn't look as "cool" when breaking through an enemy infantry line...
You learned this when you were in the Roman army?
@@williamcondon7729 this comment takes the Gold
@@williamcondon7729 Nope... Well before I enlisted in the US Army... As a kid growing up one of my childhood heroes was Hadrianus... One of Rome's greatest leaders..
Sorry Nero .... f*** off
Oh will you just do one with your “they’d use this formation”. As if even the Romans legions would have a strategy for this very scenario.
The amount of times Roman armies got slaughtered in their little formations speaks for itself.
The formation "testudo" was not made for the melee. It was made to move under fire. If you don´t lower your shields before you have contact with the enemy, you will not have a chance to do this later, because you need space for this movement. When some soldiers of the front line fall, the soldiers of the second line are very vulnerable. They will not manage to lower their shields fast engought.
It's incredible that since Gladiator there has never been another good Roman Empire movie in Hollywood
Rome series.
Even in Gladiator the romans are very poorly shown... using pila as spears...
@@Comissar_Carolusthis did happen in many cases they had to fight cavalry
@@Comissar_Carolus You are correct that Gladiator was horrendous, as was BBC's Rome. But pila as ad hoc spears was a secondary function. The fact that they're short and non-optimized for it is why it's not their primary function. It's a bit like when the Macedonians halved their Sarissa at the sockets when in awkward non-uniform terrain and urban areas. Broken down they were non-optimized as regular spears but their ad hoc functionality was adequate for their immediate niche.
They could have easily tightened up their formation with shields and slowly made their way back
the scene makes no sense to begin with. testudo has no protection from behind. meaning the back is exposed. so it would have been impossible to hold out against the infantry anyway.
It makes no sense for them to break ranks and flee in a disorganized mob when faced with an enemy they can't outrun.
What should they have done then ? They had no long-range spear at hand, only their shield and sword.
@@theogeffrelot983 - Adopt a defensive formation and/or retreat in an orderly manner. Chariots can't overrun them if they stay together. All they can do is run circles around them while throwing spears and firing arrows.
@@matthewzito6130 They dont need to overrun them, they just need to keep circling and cut them down. they would all be dead before they walked back to the camp. running will save a few, holding will kill them all.
@@Dimes607 No. Running would get them all killed. Then can't defend themselves at all while they're running away. ... Also, if chariots were as unstoppable as what's portrayed here people wouldn't have stopped using them in favor of regular cavalry.

They're using Testudo like a Fulcum. It works better stationary with supporting elements like light infantry protecting the flanks. Also, spears.

They got Testudo formation totally wrong... it's actually meant for sieges and defending against projectiles, not for pushing against enemies like a Greek phalanx.
Nonetheless, I still thoroughly enjoyed the scene.

They should have Gladiator so they knew how to deal with chariots.
My man should’ve just went back into solid formation. Horses won’t charge into a block of men
Cavalry horses were usually trained to do exactly that tbh.. Especially medival heavy cavalry.. they were ruthless at it too!
That happens only when the solid block has a lot of pikes (or bayonets) facing all directions.
You confuse Roman Empire era, with Middle Age or Napoleon era.
Depends on the weapons they are using noob;p
@@varunmadhavan3227 Chariots aren't medieval heavy cavalry.
They dont have to, just ride along side and let the wheel blades do the work. once the block breaks from fear the infantry will do the rest.

Those chariots wouldn't charge into a block of shields and spears. Why turn their backs and run?
Do you think so
There is a few man out there and their spears(hasta) is aprox.3 meters long not enough man to form ranks and not enough amount of Spears to create a Spear wall in order to stop scyted chairots besides momentum and heavyness of chairots are not an easy match for a small band of legioners

Fooooooorrr theeeee eaggleeeess😼
NGL, the book was way better. And afaik there's no evidence of chariots with blades being used in Britain. Julius Caesar wrote: "Their mode of fighting with their chariots is this: firstly, they drive about in all directions and throw their weapons and generally break the ranks of the enemy with the very dread of their horses and the noise of their wheels; and when they have worked themselves in between the troops of horse, leap from their chariots and engage on foot. The charioteers in the meantime withdraw some little distance from the battle, and so place themselves with the chariots that, if their masters are overpowered by the number of the enemy, they may have a ready retreat to their own troops. Thus they display in battle the speed of horse, together with the firmness of infantry; and by daily practice and exercise attain to such expertness that they are accustomed, even on a declining and steep place, to check their horses at full speed, and manage and turn them in an instant and run along the pole, and stand on the yoke, and thence betake themselves with the greatest celerity to their chariots again."
Ah, I remember the passage in the book when one eyewitness recalls the last stand of the ninth. The last soldiers forming a square around the eagle, fighting with the ferocity of a wounded boar: the outcome never in doubt, but inflicting heavy losses on the attackers.
good
I'm always fascinated by the way - in defiance of a LOT of evidence - that everyone prior to 1700 in movies has a choice of drab, pale, dirty, or washed-out for clothing colours, and Romans will probably still be wearing those bizarre leather jackets instead of authentic mailshirts in a thousand years. Oh, and shields were never painted. p.s. What the Hell are Roman racing chariots doing there? And why the retreat from a weapon which never worked against steady infantry (with strange knives on the wheels - wtf?)?
hmmm, no pilum thrown to disorganise the enemy, and im pretty sure a tight wedge is the prescribed procedure for breaking through enemy lines
cool
Everyone was gangsta until chariots came.
I always wondered if having the giant toothbrush on top of their head didn't mark them out a bit?
Did anyone ever use blades on chariots?I understood the "Celts" used them as battle taxis, moving warriors around the battlefield, and they were light, agile wicker framed things
Blades were a pretty common war tactic mostly in eastern armies. Great Alexander faced them successfully vs Darius.
I read that the Celts did not actually use them. Although they were used elsewhere in the Middle East and Asia.

Oof. That testudo and those pila would have come in handy on those chariots. Subpar IQ at work.
yeah romans never would have just turned tail like that, I as expecting to see an orderdly retreat instead we got a rout
@@IinferusS Yeah, this was painful to watch. Glad I'm not alone!
The Testudo tactics work the same way as forming squares in the Napoleonic era did. A great defence against cavalry with all armaments facing oncoming horde. Be they spears, pikes or muskets with bayonets, the results would be the same. Stay in formation and survive, break formation and die.
No, they are pretty different. The testudo formation was meant for advancing under heavy fire from projectiles, with soldiers tightly packed together and not able to advance quickly or fight properly. It was probably used in sieges to allow approaching enemy walls while minimizing casualties until the last minute. The square was very different. It was a hollow formation that was done to prevent enemy cavalry from circling around and charging into the rear, with the bayonets on soldiers' muskets acting like pikes and muskets for shooting them at range. Only an incompetent leader would have tried a testudo in the face of a charging enemy.
Testudo is ineffective against cavalry, in fact this was one of the key elements in Crassus' defeat at Charrae: Parthian mounted archers forced legionnaires into testudo, only for the cataphracts to harass such vulnerable formations.
During the late empire the romans developed a formation called fulcum, based on the use of pikes and of three locked lines of shields, which was indeed effective against cavalry.
Essa formação Roma é patrão...São utilizada na entrada em casa penais rebelados. Sendo, usado como:"FORMAÇÃO TARTARUGA" na "TROPA DE CHOQUE DAS POLICIAS".
I doubt the Germanics just ran face first into the shields like that 😂

Too bad they get it all wrong. There's no evidence for blades on chariot wheels. The testudo was rarely used and only then against a fixed fortification.
Inappropriate use of testudo. No warrior could leap over a Roman shield-wall. Romans used pila or spears before the gladius was drawn, they also used auxiliaries such as archers and cavalry. Roman infantry fought in disciplined ranks. Their shields were weapons. Unarmoured infantry was not a threat on an open field.
Conclusion of the story: The Romans were organized, disciplined and intelligent. the Celts were a bunch of morons who attacked a wall of shields in their nightgowns, howling like beasts.
Bro your joking right? You pay to much attention to Hollywood lmao, romans did kick ass and were futuristic for there time

These guys should have watched Gladiator
No consistency. If you accept that they were a very disciplined unit able to plow through resistance like that and only to do the last thing any disciplined unit should do when facing chariots, and that is to break and run. They should at least have them try and hold a formation. Horses aren't going to willingly plow into a solid shield wall. Then they were surrounded by hostile troops who suddenly just disappeared and didn't even pursue or at least contain the fleeing enemy.
As far as the hostiles disappearing, im guessing they were ordered to leave the field.
Doesn't make sense, they could have went for the flanks while the chariots took the center. But maybe the leader wanted all the glory
