    I remember seeing this in the theater. Gremlins, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, Streets of Fire, The Last Starfighter, The Neverending Story, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... yeah, that wasn't a bad summer. 😎

    I was wondering if you knew about the history of gremlins, but your due diligence had already pulled it out. Kudos to you. Another thing that the RAF believed in was 'Rogue' aircraft. Like a rogue elephant. We now say, "Don't buy a car made on Mondays." There were certain aircraft that just didn't fly right, no matter how much they tried to fix it. If lucky, the aircraft was relegated to being a Hangar Queen, a source of spare parts. In the early days, it was flown with a warning to the pilot and crew. I've read about a bomber, that for some reason, the wings didn't match up and it flew crooked. Hate to be a crew chief on a rogue aircraft. When your aircraft didn't come back, it was like losing a family member.And the guilt.... I don't think that the Americans used that term. Thank you.

    Never saw Gremlins. I don't tend to watch monster/horror movies, with the odd exception of the "Alien" movies. I don't really know why those resonated with me so much more than others. Maybe just cause I'm a big sci fi nerd and it's got some actually kinda hard sci fi elements in it that are cool.
    My favorite x-mas movie though is Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon. It's an anime movie about three homeless people in Tokyo who find an abandoned baby on X-mas Eve and decide to try to find her parents. I watched it at first because I was a big fan of his previous work, but it's also notable for me as the first media I'd ever seen with a sympathetic portrayal of of a trans character, who is also one of the three protagonists. Although it being a 2003 film it does have a fair amount of slurs. Great movie to watch for it's 20th anniversary though. And a pretty good introduction to Satoshi Kon's works imo. It's probably the least trippy thing he ever made. If you like it I suggest watching the rest of his movies in release order cause they kinda work best that way even though none of them are connected narratively.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 5 měsíci +3

      That sounds fascinating! I might try to check it out :)
      The first positive portrayal I ever remember encountering of a trans person was in The World According to Garp, the book moreso than the movie.

      Kon’s filmography is required viewing, and can easily be done in a weekend. There is also his television series, Paranoia Agent, which may be overlooked on film lists.

    Besides the usual favorites, the ones with Jimmy Stewart or the other one with Natalie Wood, or the one with Cary Grant and David Niven, or the sweet one with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray and Leo G Carrol. But my favorite Christmas movie is Three Godfathers, the 1936 version (Walter Brennan is in it) or its earlier version, Hell's Heroes, because I'm a sucker for noble sacrifice, especially when acted by rogues. I can't stand the 1948 version with John Wayne. It's not like his character hadn't died in earlier films, he could have done so here. Growing up in Hawaii, they played The Wizard of Oz every Christmas Day until the late sixties at least. So weirdly, that's a Christmas movie to me. Thank you and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. Mele Kalikimaka hou'oli makahiki hou. Thank you and take care. Hope 2024 will be great for you and your loved ones. And the pain and suffering in the Ukraine and the Mideast, please stop it. Please stop it.

    Another great review, Some favorite actors showing up in this movie. Who would have thought Polly Holliday would make a great 'Srooge.'
    It's not the first time Spielberg tried to get a laugh by playing the race card. Back to the Future had Marty putting on a guitar show. That was fine. But I was pretty upset with the implication that he influenced Chuck Berry. Thank you.

    About the father having money, I seem to remember that he sold one of his inventions (and possibly being scolded for spending it all). But I haven't seen this in years so I probably made it up or got it from another story, "unknowing inventor" was also a stereotype abundant in thise days. And "support the entire family" might also be an inworld exaggeration, teenagers don't need to know everything after all.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 4 měsíci

      I don't think we see him sell one, but it's possible he did off screen since he was traveling around for that purpose and we see some poor sucker buy his smokeless ash tray later in the film 😅

    I can now see that the Gremlins were being portrayed and related to the black people,
    but when I watched this movie as a kid I did not see any Racism in it,
    so for all the kids who were watching this movie at that time,
    they never realized and understood the Racism part.
    I think most of the adults also did not realized and understood the Racism part, because it was the innocent era of times.
    The white characters were given strict rules of engagement, but they could not follow the warnings,
    thus causing that cute little fury creatures to turn into monster Gremlins,
    so who's fault was it to cause all of that mess in the first place? Yes, it was the white people's fault.
    Well, the white characters in this movie are also not all that good people,
    so either way both races are portrayed with some kind of real world life case, in a sense of reality,
    and are not being totally fake character type which does not exist in any world, with overly cringe attitude like in today's Hollywood.
    On top of that this movie had so many teen actors, but there were zero annoying over smart teen characters,
    one of the teen was so hardworking that he was supporting his whole family and taking on responsibilities, instead of playing videogames like in today's world,
    over smart annoying teen characters have become a regular thing in today's Hollywood, so why is that? Is that a good thing?
    These are all of the totally justified reasons why I will always love the old movies and shows.
