Trying to quantify the business results of my experience when I have spent most of my 22yr career coordinating internal projects between managers, data teams, customer service teams, and developers. I am one who is definitely better in person than on paper. I know that, for the sake of efficiency, employers tend to tick boxes, and end up overlooking candidates who possess all of the soft skills which are often more important for some roles. For example, I was once offered a job based on a conversation I had with the managing director of a company who had not seen my resume.

Having been a copy editor and then for many years a teacher, it is very difficult to "quantify" the benefit brought to my employers. I don't feel comfortable with approaches like, "taught classes of 22 learners" or "saw my students graduate at a rate of 99.8%." As far as editing, I have no idea in what ways I can frame that my editing itself benefited the company besides simply making the products better. "Edited many, many words. Wrote some, too." Many professions do not lend itself to "business" quantifiers. The best I can do is list my many clients and the various texts I worked on. This is not addressed in many "advice" videos, which treat everyone like they have had a career in (for example) marketing and can whip off how they increased sales figures.

The hardest part in a resume for me is how to state that you do NOT want to be contacted by recruiters.
In my experience, recruiters only want to hire you for contract positions.
I want a permanent, full-time position and not something that is contract, temp to hire, etc.
How can I effectively do this in my resume ?
Maybe my expectations are outdated, but I prefer to be contacted by a company's Human Resources as I search for either Technical or Project Management work.

To answer your question, getting started with the resume itself and not taking each step one thing at a time. On a side note: at first glance, your presenters cause my personal ageist bias to kick in as I am an older job seeker; that personal oversight is my downfall. Contrarily your presenters and concepts are brilliant! Thanks for these posts.

This video convinced me to take the effort of bullet pointing my work experience👀and the sentence "Drove customer loyalty by delivering high-quality food service and wine pairing suggestions to an average of 100 customers an evening during peak business hours" sounds like a good example of how to put emphasis on the impact of your work, however the beginning "Drove customer loyalty" feels like corporate speech to me, this is one of the challenges I feel when updating my resume/LinkedIn profile, how to make it better while staying genuine to myself and not feeling like I am a bullshiter😅.
On a somewhat related note I read somewhere that one of the mistakes in resume writing is to write things that are always supposed to be assumed about you like "positive team player", if you exclude this information does it mean you're implying that you're not positive and not a team player?, did you drive customer disloyalty if you omit it?

So, the one thing I found missing, was how LONG the actual length of my resume should be. I've always heard that it should be no more than one page, but I usually spill over into two.
I also don't know where you're pointing and directing me to go to the other videos, because you're pointing to blank air; there's no link showing. Help!
Also, can you help me with the skills section? I have a HUGE paragraph of skills, with most of them geared towards systems I've learned and used. How can I narrow this down, or group together... or should I adapt it to exact verbiage from the skills the prospective employer is looking for?
    Thank you so much!!

I liked your video, still difficult to translate some skills and experience, most especially when they are transferable rather than specific, and to convey my abilities in my current role in a summarised version. Overall this video inspired me to read my CV from a different perspective. Cute eyes and nice mouth by the way. You should introduce yourself at the beginning of your videos. Ever visited Scotland?

How would you tailor a resume to one you're submitting to a Graduate School [Masters of Healthcare Administration]? What would be an example of a mission statement for such? I've worked in various aspects of health care, and having a Mom who was both a nurse and Nursing Facility Administrator, I grew up volunteering in nursing home. Is there a professional way to mention this? Or, would I casually mention it at the beginning of a response to, "why did you choose this field," during an interview?

Great advice, but your food service example at 9:14 contradicts the advice that immediately follows it about keeping bullet points concise ("1 to 2 lines max..."). Mentioning it because it's a bit confusing.

I'm looking to get back into clerical work, however my resume for the past 10 years doesn't include my previous related experience. Will they accept my current experience or how do I include my previous related experience that is not listed chronologically? Can I leave out dates to be able to include this experience?...

Hi Joe, you might consider creating a hybrid resume, which would allow you to showcase your clerical skills without having to include dates past 10 years. More on hybrid resumes here - indeedhi.re/39MQaMt. -CC

How the ever-loving french fry do I quantify my impact upon a business with $ and %?
How can I possibly *prove* that I increased or decreased x, y, and z? If were to claim something like "increased operational efficiency 20%", what can I objectively reference?
I have never gone to a financial department in any role & crunched the numbers of my own impact upon the job -- but maybe I should have?
    Please advise. Thank you. 🙂
