I heard that there was supposed to be a time skip. That makes sense. That Dayne with the Brotherhood without banners is named after Ned. Which makes no sense when you think about it. It's as strong and resilient, and as sharp as Valyrian steel, which the maesters say is forged with latent magical properties. But just like any Valyrian steel sword, Dawn is still just a sword. As you implied in your comment..It's not the sword that is special, it's the warrior who wields it. Because Ser Barristan was definitely equal to Ser Arthur, and he didn't wield Dawn. I don't think Ser Barristan wielded a Valyrian steel sword either.
It’s also mentioned that when Ser Arthur fought the smiling knight he broke his sword. Ser Arthur gave a chance to get a new sword and the smiling knight choose Dawn. He said then you shall have it. He still took him down it’s not just the sword Arthur Dayne was also amazing skilled
To be fair there is no solid proof he cut myrcella. Arianne didn’t see it, and doran seems to be pinning the blame on gerold dayne. He already said darkstar killed aerys oak heart when it was areo hotah

Doran reveals his plans for House Targaryen to Arianna, and nowhere does he mention that Gerold Dayne, the guy they were gonna blame everything on and who would be killed for it, was secretly the real Viserys. He also reveals that there had been a secret marriage pact between her and Viserys. Again, no mention of Gerold Dayne.
As for Andrey, all the conspirators who weren’t part of Doran’s family were sent to Ghaston Grey.

I like the theory (maybe the speculation) of hin being the squire of Ser Arthur and despising him by his lack of courage on facing the abuses of the Mad King to his wife. It's kinda wishful thinking but it gives another shade to that man and turn him into the type of good character Martin would write instead of just a bully.
Also, I think he could slain Myrcella if he wanted too. There's more behind that
The dawn blade does not get passed down like other familys weapons. It is only passed down to a knight of the dayne house who has shown himself to be worthy of it.
You recieve dawn because you are a great knight. You dont become a great knight when you recieve dawn.
The theory I heard was that Darkstar was set up for the wounding of Mycella
I'm still proud of my boy Ned who rode to Starfall to return Dawn to House Dayne after he and Reed killed Arthur.
Just like a lot of the George's characters, Arthur wasn't the greatest guy. He stood by for years while Aerys abused his wife and others. Arthur Dayne ended himself at the Tower of Joy because of his shame of doing nothing for so many years and being a dishonorable knight.
Ser Gerold Dayne is actually a cousin of Ser Arthur Dayne as he is truly the Great Great grandson of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Lady Dyanna Dayne . . . none other than King Viserys Targaryen III the former boy King crowned on Dragonstone after the sack of King's Landing by Queen Rhaella Targaryen. The (f)Viserys theory is soooooo underrated and even more enticing than the (f)Aegon theory. Does anyone really believe that her Grace did nothing every day and night but knit baby blankets while in months of sanctuary on Dragonstone during Robert's Rebellion?!?

Related question. Do we know Gerold even started the Darkstar nickname? I feel like most people seem to think he calls himself that to be edgy, but I could just as easily see it being a mockinging nickname other people gave him to make fun of him being overshadowed by Arthur. We see that happening with a lot of the other nicknames like Littlefinger and Blackfish.

Well it's doesn't necessarily mean he is bad by any means but dawn is just so good a sword it really enhances the wielder's power who might actually be not better than most top swordsmen

Yes, having Dawn in battle is basically magic as it cuts through swords and armors alike. Valyrian steel-level arms aren't just status symbols. They are basically medieval superweapons.

House Dayne was Decendant from Ametyhs empress. Probably because they reside dorne before the Valyrian go to 14 Flames.
