    I get the principle of not wanting a Chris Brown song sung in Glee Club, but if the theme is guilty pleasures the point is that he should be able to sing his. Separating the artist and the music in this situation is the most valid. If you’re still listening to his music you’re directly supporting him which is probably the reason the snow decided not to do one of his songs bc it would’ve helped Chris Brown a lot. But in this context it was hypocritical to not let him share his guilty pleasure just because you don’t like it.

      @tbbcch1039 Před 5 lety +6

  • @ryryhc
    @ryryhc Před 3 lety +5

    I think just the overall writing of this scene was wrong and should have probably been a bit different here's why.
    Firstly, the girls and being a bit hypocritical, they in the past have sung songs by artists who have done some questionable things. Also everybody does this, we all support people whose professional career and personal life don't match. So it's not as simple as one or the other, there is alot of nuance involved in this. Reducing it to one or the other can be hard because so many people famous people who have done great things also have done questionable things. Drawing a line of where you stop supporting is not the same for everyone so taking an extremist stance is a very clear line of what you will and won't stand for. if you are going to take the stance of art and artist's can't be separated then you have to apply it to all people and their professional careers who have done messed up things and shouldn't create a double standard.
    Secondly Jake's argument kinda double backs on itself and doesn't make a clear stance. If he truly believed that art and artists could be separated than he shouldn't feel guilty for liking a song by that artist since the two entities are separated and individual, however since he feels a bit guilty then, in his mind there is clearly a connection with the artist and the art. Yes you could argue that he feels something because he doesn't want other people to judge him on that, but that's not guilt, that's fear and embarrassment. And yes you could also argue that he felt guilty because the girls made him feel guilty, but that doesn't make sense either because he choose this as a guilty pleasure before their berating and criticisms.
    I would also like to add that using the argument of we shouldn't like just music because it's supporting him through money is a different debate. A person can't control what they do and don't like. Clearly if there is an economic support from 1 party, than it's a clear support like when a company or a famous person gets sponsored, clearly there is a shown support to that person or company because there is an outside and motivation and support to have that party keep going and an acutal support/help to that person's work. Since liking and disliking has no economic or physical support of a person's career than it clearly comes down to a moral debate if you like a person's work does it mean you support the person.

    A lot of the things Chris did were him being young and immature and not knowing how to deal with his fame. It's not an excuse for him to beat people up and things of that nature, but I think that might've been the cause of the problem and everything else he did were the side effects of his success at such a young age and not really understanding how to handle that. With how big of a celebrity he was when he was beating people up, he was so closely watched by paparazzi and news outlets and had so much pent up frustration and anger at the lack of personal space and privacy and secrecy that he became an aggressive person. Especially since his and Rihanna's relationship was so toxic and how much they'd fight with each other. But he's maturing and growing and becoming a genuinely better person, especially since he has a daughter. Just an observation tho.

Guilty pleasure is to express something you are not proud of and even if it means others don’t enjoy your choice. He likes the music, he feels guilty about it, that’s what the lesson was all about. I mean I listen to Chris’s songs but I don’t like him.
