    The best thing about this story is that almost all its characters are grey. There aren't just good guys and bad guys. Each person is both and each has reasons for the way they think, act and react. Guess, that's what makes them humane and extraordinarily powerful and different from other classics.

      Exactly. I feel like people overlook Scarlett's strong will and integrity in keeping Melanie safe. She had some decent traits, although the convict labor is deplorable. People demonize Scarlett and hold Rhett on a pedestal and say she didn't deserve him, like he treated her like a princess. In the book, Mitchell even says that he's the one man who doesn't respect Scarlett and wants to domesticate her basically (loving her like a "pet"), like that's a good thing. He loved her because she was like a wild horse, but did not see her as an equal.

      @@moon66651 Scarlett killed the Yankee soldier who broke in. Melanie wanting to take his wallet after was practical because Confederate money was worthless and they were starving. One reason she had to rely on Scarlett was because she was so sick and weak after giving birth. Nothing immoral about that. She repaid Scarlett with fierce loyalty. Defending her when no one else would. The whole point of the Melly character is to contrast her virtue with Scarlett's deception and greed.

Intermezzo is a terrific movie. He didn't like the milquetoast character of Ashley. He never saw the completed movie bc his visa was about to expire & he had to return to Britain & he forfeited his profits from GWTW. Exactly. Ashley found Scarlett charming and sexy. He was impressed with various aspects of her personality, but he was not in love with her. She was the kind of woman he'd flirt with or date, but never marry. And once he was married to Melanie, he was too decent to cheat on her with Scarlett. Scarlet mistook his intrigue with her to be genuine love and thought that it was only Ashley's sense of duty and honor that kept him from being with her. She was right that Ashley should have told her years ago that he really loved Melanie. Scarlett had spent years loving the fictional Ashley and not the real Ashley.

      @maryk446 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I don't think it was a crush. Scarlett did love Ashley, but part of her infatuation was that she really thought Ashley wanted her. First she thought, as she said when she broke the vase, that he was too afraid to marry her because they were very different. Then she assumed he had too much honor to leave his wife and child for her. At the end she realizes that he found her charming and sexy, but he never really loved her the way he loved Melanie. That's why she got over him so quickly and turned to Rhett.

The film seems to be aware that while Scarlett and Rhett have good in them, they are at times the most spoiled, whiny, selfish, and manipulative people you would ever see. However that's what makes them so entertaining to watch (particularly when together) and makes their positive elements shine all the more. I didn't think this was manipulation. It was his true self. He was being honest about attracted to her but he was also honest that he couldn't leave his wife and son behind. But I do think his ego was properly stroked by having a woman like Scarlett (beautiful, passionate, strong) wanting him and repeatedly coming on to him. I think he found her properly 'hot' (for lack of a better term) and would have sex with her if his 'honor' didn't prevent him to do so. He is human, come on LOL. But y'all are right that he was not very able to adapt to the post-war life like Scarlett and Rhett (who are willing to get their hands dirty literally and figuratively). Melanie noticed this too, that's why she asked Scarlett to care for Ashley after she's died.

Scarlett would get tired of him and would do what she wanted to do despite conventions to his (and his family's embarrassment), and since she's good in business, she would take care of everything financially...and Ashley would be disillusioned by her and drifted even further emotionally. Although in the beginning, I'm sure the two would have a pretty good sex life but yeah, Ashley's idealization of Scarlett would fall away sooner than later.

      I don't necessarily like Ashley's character, but tbh, I kind of 'get' why he's lusted for Scarlett. His wife is so frail that sex would probably hurt her and they probably had to have very little of it or abstain because she would probably die if she got knocked up (and they're pretty fertile that he managed to knock her up the first 'leave' he had). So, in the book, he is this young mid 20s man, red-blooded (sure he may be quiet/introverted but still a sexual being) and to have this gorgeous, charming young woman (who's the belle of the ball basically) kept throwing herself at him, professing her love. Who wouldn't be tempted? He's human. But at least, he was 'honorable' enough to stop from having sex with her... Yeah, imo, he's too 'honest' to admit that he was lusting after her but he was honest to tell her that he wouldn't leave and hurt Melanie. Even when he did say he didn't love her, she wouldn't 'take' it. That's how stubborn our Scarlett is lol.

Please correct me if I am wrong or if in the book it says anything about her having a mental disorder. I know she is very self centered and only cares about herself. But she lives in a marriage to Rhett who she does not ever love. She lives her life in complete bitterness and unhappiness. I know in real life the actress Vivien Leigh did have severe bioplar disorder and depression. That is not out of disrespect for her. She is an incredible amazing actress. I just mean that I feel that she was able to connect very well with Scartlett in this iconic classic role. I do not know really what kind of person Viven was but I do know that she was somehow able to her emotional stability and latch it to connect that element with Scartlett O'Hara. @@windstorm1000 She spends the entire film allowing her obsession with a man whom she cannot have -- another woman's husband -- to determine most of her actions. She marries three men whom she does not love, one out of sheer spite and the other two for money -- and she doesn't have any respect for two of them. She doesn't have much patience with or respect for anyone whom she can't make use of for her own personal benefit, and she's inclined to take action without sparing much concern for the potential impact of her actions and decisions on other people. There's much more to being a feminist than simply being stubborn and strong-willed.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC Před rokem +1

      @@Tania-rg7jp No, she didn't. Even if Tara hadn't been pillaged by the Yankees and nearly everything of value removed, the Union blockade would have made it difficult for the O'Hara family to find a market for their cotton. Whatever wealth the O'Haras still have at the end of the war is either in the form of Confederate currency -- which at that point is absolutely worthless -- or in the house and land (since Lincoln has formally freed all the slaves). The land is still viable and thus still worth something, but probably not as much as it once was since most of the slaves are gone. Remember the scene in which Tara's former overseer visits? He's there to buy Tara out from underneath Scarlett, probably for pennies on the dollar. The reason why Scarlett goes to visit Rhett in jail is because she believes she can get money from him to pay the debts on Tara -- and when Rhett turns her down and she sees Frank Kennedy, she lies to him about Suellen marrying someone else so that she can get the money from him.
