  • You might not believe it, but Anis Mogjani has never been to a barber shop. And he has really long arms. Oh yeah, and he's also a two time National Poetry Slam Champion, winner of the International World Cup Poetry Slam, and a National Book Award Nominee along with various other extraordinary accomplishments. He is a talented and creative artist, who has long been fascinated with the extraordinary process of being human. Everyone, he believes, is "invested with nobility," and this is an idea that he constantly carries with him. His beliefs shape him, and he says that his parents helped shape his beliefs. They gave him, as he says, "The permission to be oneself, acceptance of who one is." If he were able to harness the power of our 2012 attendees, he says he'd want to send everyone out into the world with homemade inventions to make the world a better and more interesting place. One invention he'd like to see? Levitating shoes. He'd love to own a pair someday. He'd also like to open a bookstore, start a soda pop shop with his wife, and establish "an organization that brought to fruition the creative wanderings of people that do not liken themselves to being creative individuals." We should probably mention-it might already be clear-that he doesn't believe there's ever one place that we arrive at; there's no end point, so there's no opportunity to rest on one's laurels. His goal in life is to simply continue, something that he says is actually quite difficult. Continuing takes patience and it's often a process of balancing being selfish and selfless. We're excited to see him continue on the TEDxConcordiaUPortland stage, where his slam talents and creativity will be welcomed with open arms.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I was on the crew team with this gem of a man in 1997 and 1998 in college. Art school. We drove to practice together and to regattas. I always knew he was special. I still have a quote of his in my journal. To this day. I am so glad I met him. I will be forever grateful.

Some people are just so brilliant it takes your breath away. Others just straight up asphyxiate you with their mind.

If everyone could just teach their kids that they are no less brilliant than any other person on the planet. If we teach our kids love there would be no more killings, no more wars, or violence. People would do the right thing not because they get paid for it, or because of our expectations, they would do it out of love for their fellow being. I wish people would open their hearts and listen to messages such as this. It breaks my heart when people are cruel, this keeps me sane and hopeful

This man paints images with words and stanzas better than most artists can with a pen and ink.

a ministerial approach to the reminders of seeing the world through the microscope or the telescope, of constant nobility. The benefits of losing the fear about our futures. It felt like a loosening of the overly analytical life and a welcoming of joyful living. I could always use more of that.

Mr. Sagan's wife was a director, or so, of NORML and...
in Dr. Lester Grinspoon's book "Forbidden Medicine,"
Carl Sagan was "Mr. X" and his passage, regarding the benefits of cannabis to his critical-insightful thinking, was very insightful and inspiring.
Oh,and cannabis may one day treat that same form of Brain cancer for some people.

You really need to edit this. The intro was so long, I was going to quit. There were some good things, some bad. But sifting thru the words, the message gets lost. Since you're a poet, I hope this one means something to you:
Poetry in general, is an enjoyable thing.
It should roll off the tongue, and appear to sing.
But some would strain for an impressive phrase.
And get an awkward line, and cause a haze.
A little color is fine. But one would hope,
That no line is turned into a kaleidoscope.
When it's too bright, and not very clear,
It gets hard to read, and hard to hear.
