A guide to some of the paints and primers necessary for painting and airbrushing scale models, offering advice on different types of paint and primers and the pros and cons of each....
PSA: tamiya bottles have a little "lip" or edge on the inside of the bottle near the top. I find that if you take a brand new bottle of tamiya paint and fill it to this lip with thinner and then shake the bottle up really good, then you will have a whole bottle of airbrush ready paint to use. Even better is that you can then recycle unused paint from your airbrush right back into the jar.
Mr Aqueous has the same I think. But the lip is not needed you just need some general expirience with thinning paints for airbrush. Skimmed milk is the way to go but acrylic laqcuers like Tamiya, Mr aqueous and AK real color can be thinned even more like 70:30 for very smooth coveredge. Best thinner is Tamiya laqcuer thinner retarder type even better than the leveling thinner.
After 30 years I opened my enamel tins (mostly Humbrol) and they were still fine. It's a matter of taste but I still prefer them over acrylic paints. The enamel paints dry much slower so I use them mostly for handpainting and effects (wet in wet techniques or weathering). I have Tamiya but don't like the colors and their quick drying time. I have now bought pearl white from mr. Hobby for a model car but no idea with what to thin it for airbrushing. Isopropyl alcohol perhaps?
Great video m8! Painting is the hardest part of modelling in my situation. Lots of great info here thanks for posting. Time to go paint take care and KUTGW
Great video! Thanks for posting. I was very happy to hear you say that Tamiya acrylics are horrible for brush painting. I found that to be the case as well and thought that it might just be something that I was doing wrong.
@ Ternary, glad my tip helped, the flow aid helps massively, and the finish you get is super smooth, xtracrylix are up there with my favourite paints, i just wish i could get more people to try them. The aircraft and armor colour matches are superb too, love them. As for the H&S Evo, i think its a superb bit of kit i have 2 of them and an iwata revolution which is the main competition to the evo, and while the iwata is very good, i think the Harder steenbeck is alot better. Cheers Paul
I wasn't a fan of the Tamiya XF colours for brush painting. untill I thinned them down into dropper bottles with a size zero fishing sinker in the dropper bottle. Since I done that love using now for miniature painting. But each to their own I guess. Top video bud.
Totally relate to your comment about brush painting with Tamiya acrylics. ( I thought it was just me!) . - I'm persevering but i really need an airbrush!... .
Hello Paul, thanks for the video, I only have access to revell and italleri paints in my country, you already mentioned revell is no good, any suggestions about italeri?
I am a huge fan of model masters enamels for spraying my models. Any experience there? I also never have issues with them taking forever to dry. I airbrush most my parts. but when I hand paint i do have to wait extra time for the paint to dry.
Hi Paul, Just wanted to say how much use I've found your tutorial and build videos. I'm just getting back into modelling again after a considerable lay-off, so it's been quite a quick learning curve! I've got a couple of models under construction at the moment, and so far, things are going well. I purchased an airbrush and various bits of undercoating have gone well: so fingers crossed! By the way, on one of your videos, you said you were struggling to buy Tamiya extra thin? Is this still the case? The reason I ask is because I happen to work for Hobbycraft, and they've just started to stock it. Thought I'd give you a heads-up in case you didn't know... Thanks again for the help
Nice video. One info about humbrol, some 20 years ago, in mid 90s i got some 120,150. humbrol enamel paints and all survive paints still works ( only bronze antique is spoiled ). Model Master and Revell stop working in less then 10. years.
Đorđe Đurković I have Humbrols I bought back in the late '80's!! that i had in storage. Last year I got back into the hobby as my son developed an interest. I was STUNNED when I opened the tins< I used ACRYLIC LACQUER THINNER I bought at an automotive shop, if you spend the time stirring and mixing and shaking the paints came back to life and performed like new!!
Hi cool video. i need to paint translucent colors on clear plastic surfaces. Any recommendations for which type of primer/paint to use? I'm thinking an airbrush would create the most uniform finish. thanks
Excellent information. New to channel. Just getting back into the hobby. Will definitely join your mentioned forums. Thanks so much for sharing and knowledge and understanding of using the different products. I’m in the US but I doubt that matters. Maybe you can recommend a decent air brush compressor. Nothing over the top but one that comes with a decent pressure gauge. Most start off at 0-25 psi very inaccurate for setting up. Thanks in advance Artie 👍👍👍
I brush paint exclusively, and use only acrylics. I've been using only Tamiya and Modelmaster Acryl. On the whole, not much impressed with either for brush painting. I did this because my local hobby shops sold mostly those brands. but now these shops are disappearing and I must mail order, so I may as well get the best brush painting acrylics I can. You seem to like Vallejo Model Color and Lifecolor. Which of these two do you think is best? This is a very helpful video, BTW. Thanks.
for airbrush mostly by the way . and is the Neo by iwata a good airbrush that i should start with or can you think/suggest of another airbrush in the similar or cheaper price?
I find modelflex and minitare by badger very good so is their primmer but I find the colour range limited as the minitare are mostly model railway colours, modelflex have some basic military colours you can thin/clean with water and you can brush paint
Hi,good video. I just bought a 1/18th diecast model and i wanted to spruce up the interior and maybe a bit of the engine which is plastic, what would u recommend for something like that as far as type of brush and paint? Any help would be appreciated. Im in america if that makes a difference. Thank you.
hey . could you kindly suggest a set/kit of Primer, paint, varnish, clearcoat etc that i should get for model car painting as i am just starting it out! plz respond!!! thankyou :) great video by the way .
What would be the best kind of paint to use on plastic that will be handled a lot and will not chip or wear? I've had bad luck with enamels as well... any help would be greatly appreciated as it needs to be very durable and brushable. Thanks
I use the Revell and Humbrol enamel paints and in my opinion. They are great to use with model kits and also some diecast model vehicles if they are chipped. Yes they might take a while to dry (about 4-6 hours for the Revell paint and 12-16 hours for the Humbrol paint) but for me. The wait is well worth it and the Revell enamel paint is more brush friendly than the Humbrol range as the Humbrol enamel paints are thicker than the Revell paints. The paints I tend to avoid are the acrylics because they flake like orange peel which ruined my Corvette model and I ended up removing the lot and redoing the model in enamel paint which in my opinion gave a much better and a smoother finish. Although I always paint my models with a wet brush dipped in water to stop the fibres soaking up the paint and if you do this yourself, you will find that the paint flows onto the model much easier rather than clinging onto the brush :).
Paul @ ISM Its all down to the end user and their preferences mate. The disadvantages of enamel paint is that it will take about a week to completely sure as where the acrylic paints dry much quicker. Personally I like enamels better because despite the longer curing time and the odour of this paint. It does give a much smoother and a better finish than enamel. Also its more robust wearing and gives a smooth glossy shine.
I have to agree with the comments on humbrol acrylics, awful to spray with and hand painting is no better but revell aqua are in a different league. Tried xtracrylix with some good results but have now built up my collection of mr hobby acrylics which I agree are superb and are pretty much all I spray, xtracrylix and revell for brushing.
Can someone confirm that Vallejo primer can be sanded? Paul mentioned it could if you let it dry for two days but I've heard it can't so I bought some AK primer.
i always want to get in to this tinny air brush hobby so right now i just collect data,,so --- is it possible to use ,normal paints for painting ? like metallic that is used for real cars ? or for wood , wood paint ,or for plastic acrylic paint one in 1L cans and normal nitro thinner in these small air brushes ? or i must buy in these small sizes ? thanks
Can I ask what sounds like a really dumb question? What colour primer would you use, on tanks? Does it depend on the base colour you're using over it? Is it as simple as light colours = white priemr, darker coloours dark primer? Please excuse I'm jsut starting this
Old Skool Wax Not a dumb question! Grey is the best color for primer, better than white. The problem with a grey primer is that it darkens the color you're spraying over it a little. This is especially so for bright ,or as you mention, indeed, light colors. Some people would not be fussy about this when thinking about tank colors (I wouldn't). If the tank is one, dark color, then you could use grey primer. If it has those different patches of camouflage colors, you should use white primer. If they have to use a white primer, some experienced builders then still put one or two coats of grey primer, and then one coat of white, and I suggest you do the same.
Those Humbrol tins were a nightmare, the separation at the bottom was at the level where the products should be recalled if you ask me, absolutely terrible! lol
James Vozar, I agree those Humbrol tins absolutely sucked, but the color was normally pretty good, I was at a shop one time which was going out of business and was able to buy almost 400 tins for $65.00 lol it was worth the hassle.
I can't find an answer to a very basic question I have as a wanna-be scale model painter: how many and which colors should I have? Talking about the most basic set. Would it be Cyan Magenta Yellow, Black and White, just like the printers mix these to get any color? Or is there another approach? I wouldnt buy 50 individual colors just to start, hahah
hi there everyone. thought I'd ask what are the best items for sanding? and any particular products from any companies? thanks for the support and keep the videos up. they really help!
Having problems with static electricity pulling paint off the brush, sometimes when the brush is more than 3 inches from the surface of the kit. Any suggestions how to stop this?
Hi. Im just wondering, my plastic model seats are color black and wondering if i want to paint it red do i need to peel off the black? Or just spray it on top?

Useful video review. I found it interesting but can I make one suggestion? Don't 'conduct' the commentary by waving the bottles about. Would help if you kept them still and close to the camera for a few seconds. I see one comment below where the viewer had hearing problems and trouble identifying a brand.
I live in finland and i have found only 3 shops that have akryliks every other has revell email colors and im 14 dad get me in capital so i can get in scale model shop NO for my luck we are going to look one shop that is near my sisters hobby place that my mom or dad usualy takes him i lookd web site and it looks like there is akrylik paints in it and maby putty that is out from evry fiking store i have got in
ok question for ANYONE that really knows paints. Im getting into painting models and dont know which to use acrylics or enamels?? Which is the best one of the 2?? As in how I want things to look is I love the so called candy coat like on cars. The super shiny wet paint look. Which is best for that? And which will last longer n not scrap or chip as easy?? Need the info FAST PLEASE!! I have only 3 more or 4 days left till I have to put my order in. Thank you VERY much
+Erik Iacopelli Might be too late, but lacquer paints are the best for getting a candy coat. Airbrush some black gloss, then silver, then clear red for a candy red finish.
My half-wit son was putting an airplane model together with some of the that DuPont glue. Well he was at the kitchen table and passed clean out, smacked his head on the table. It left a knot on his head big enough hitch a team of mules to. I don't know whats in that DuPont Glue but it must be something powerful to cause somebody to pass out. The doctor said Ray Don is gonna be okay but it took forever for the swelling to go down. I got a good mind to sue the DuPont family.

Great information, thank you for posting. Cheers.

Holy Crap these are so great Paul.
Thanks for doing these Dude. I wish that I had these 5 or 6 years ago.
Still great info though.

Yeah i keep hearing about thinning them down makes them eaiser to brush paint. Cheers mate :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. How is your experience by mixing different brands on the same model and on top of different layers of paint?
Totally relate to your comment about brush painting with Tamiya acrylics. ( I thought it was just me!) . - I'm persevering but i really need an airbrush!... .
Just starting out, I found this very useful though it's hard to find supplies here. Only Tamiyas are available.
So informative thank you 😃👍
Still love the Mr Hobby Aqueous? Have you tried their Acrysion line? Thanks for the video!

Had no idea that Tamiya made enamels...this is the first time I've ever heard of their existence.
I brush paint with a few tamiya colors and halve no issues
I had a lot of problemas :(
can you buy horizon model paints?? or can you same colours in different makes?
Where did you buy the surface primar

do you know a website to get Tamiya enamel paints from they are a nightmare in the uk

Cheers buddy, thanks for watching - Paul :)
@vilzku39 Could you not mail order from overseas?
Hello Paul, with how much psi you spray the tamiya Xf colours!?
What’s the yellow and white bottle paints called as can’t make it out
Did not get the name of the third primer brand, can you clear that up please?
I just need black and red to paint my subs is there anything else I may need?
With the valejo primer fo you wait 24hr between each coat or before you paint on the primer with other paints
Just use Ultimate Modelling Primer so much better and easier www.umpretail.com
How are Humbrol Acrylics are brush painting? recommended? and what consistency for thinning? I heard to the consistency of milk..?
I think they are some of the worst paints to airbrush but if I'm honest I've not brush painted with them.
I can't find an answer to a very basic question I have as a wanna-be scale model painter:
how many and which colors should I have? Talking about the most basic set. Would it be Cyan Magenta Yellow, Black and White, just like the printers mix these to get any color? Or is there another approach? I wouldnt buy 50 individual colors just to start, hahah
What do RLM and FS stand for?
hi there everyone. thought I'd ask what are the best items for sanding? and any particular products from any companies? thanks for the support and keep the videos up. they really help!
Watch scalemodelmedics video on preparing surfaces
+Bill Peters-Cheale thanks I'll check their channel
Having problems with static electricity pulling paint off the brush, sometimes when the brush is more than 3 inches from the surface of the kit. Any suggestions how to stop this?
+Ray Thornton They're are static-reducing bracelets you can buy, don't know if it will help though.
Use a grounding strap like the kind small electronics repair people use. Ifix it sells some on their web site.
So, you didnt like the Humbrol and Revell enamels huh ? You can send them to me, i love'em ^^
At 8:22 he said he doesn't like their acrylics.
True, my bad.
Take a shot every time Paul says superb
6 years ago you would be very drunk
Hi. Im just wondering, my plastic model seats are color black and wondering if i want to paint it red do i need to peel off the black? Or just spray it on top?
+Kirk Castro Just spray over :)
thank you! oh btw im not using an airbrush but a hard brush because im just new to it.
Could you airbrush the vallejo model clolour?
what happened to part 2 of this series ??can't find it ??
Never got round to it sadly
what is the best for model cars
I prefer lacquer based paints for cars, the likes hiroboy sell
Podrian hacer la transcripcion en español
As another poster commented, send your enamels my way!! i think tamiya acrylics are evil frankly, humbrol acrylics shit in the past OK now spesh for the odd figure.
im not sold on acrylics still... they scratch off easy and just seem dare i say it a little too ''clinical'' its a a ball ache when youve touched up the same 1/48 figure for the tenth time, Also they seem poor for metallics.. if the paint surface isnt immaculate they go gloopy and wont take.
enamels are just foolproof you can just slap them on and go, they sand well dry well etc. im selling my tamiya acrylics to fund humbrol enamels actually!
but each to his own!
Do they still sell that awesome smelling glue?
I pitty your Christmas
+cian kircher
Why? Because I like to sniff glue and have a good time?
What do you mean by RLM colors? I may not have heard you right so, sorry in advance for the spelling?
Luftwaffe colours for aircraft
Where is a good place to buy model paints from online, most places the colors im looking for are always out of stock.
emodels.co.uk is a good place to start :)
Thanks! ill check it out :)
+Ryan Winklevoss if you are in the U.S, Hobby Lobby
Every time I've tried the vallejo primers paints just don't want to stick to it
Your spraying them in too thick a coat, i myself now prefer and use ak/ammo primer as its much more user friendly
Can you link to the ak/ammo I can't find it
Useful video review. I found it interesting but can I make one suggestion? Don't 'conduct' the commentary by waving the bottles about. Would help if you kept them still and close to the camera for a few seconds. I see one comment below where the viewer had hearing problems and trouble identifying a brand.
Why not use humbrol because my kit recommends their colours and I don't want to get the colours wrong
The umbral paints are terrible, awful quietly, try Tamiya much better, research will show you the true colour of your chosen subject too
I managed to figure it out and ordered a few different Tamiya colours. They do look alot better to use
I live in finland and i have found only 3 shops that have akryliks every other has revell email colors and im 14 dad get me in capital so i can get in scale model shop NO for my luck we are going to look one shop that is near my sisters hobby place that my mom or dad usualy takes him i lookd web site and it looks like there is akrylik paints in it and maby putty that is out from evry fiking store i have got in

would you paint an interior of a model that would be hidden and not show up when you fully assemble the model?
Yes i always do :) - Paul
Even if no-one can see it, YOU know it's there, and really well done, so that is satisfying.
Did not get the name of the first primer you used bit hard of hearing
ok question for ANYONE that really knows paints.
+MrNotgoth Thank you very much Ill give it a try
Again it's not the models that cost , it's the bloody paints that you need that end up costing as much or even more than the models

Jees us! I need someone to explain the painting process not a bunch of rabble bout paints.
