Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 American black comedy/drama film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. It was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California.
The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen, with Erich von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, her devoted servant. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson.
Glenn is underrated... she deserves all the awards!!!!!!!
Sunset is her Oscar chance.
Amazing
AAAALLLLLLLL
Renan C. S. Maia that’s an understatement!
Yes, she was supposed to a subject of pity not a pop star!
I don't understand why this fantastic human being, one of the best actress of all times hasn't been giving an Oscar.
Because Harvey Weinstein types rig the oscars.
i don't get it either!
Because she’s not classically beautiful, never plays sympathetic characters and/or is not into campaigning for a win. One of these gets you the Oscar. Everyone knows that.
it’s a travesty
She sings this song beautifully but there’s no lyric interpretation or acting. Look up how Betty Buckley sings this song then even better look up how Bea Arthur sings 50 percent
Glenn Close was born to perform this song. What a woman.....What a show.
chbj121 exactly! I’m still shook!
Xxx
Glenn Close is very versatile. Fatal Attraction as the wicked antagonist to this sensational performance, and that voice. Fabulous!
Yes she is brilliant, the stage production was brilliant. I saw Betty Buckley in London. I didn’t know her and I’m ashamed to admit it but Ms. Buckley was for me just as brilliant. Imagine how it must feel to be Ms. Close a superb actress and also have a voice like that. I’d love to give her a great big cuddle
@@bar10ml44
I've got Betty Buckley's production on video, and she's nearly flawless throughout. But in all honesty, this show was meant for Glenn Close. I mean, we already know that she can play batshit crazy. Norma's just a different level of cray cray altogether.
Before I read the plot, by just looking at her act, I could tell what the play is about, she is more than amazing.
0:50 that crazy look worth a million words. about an old fading actress who is trying convince the world how amazing an actress she can be. She is acting an old fading actress acting young in a slightly psychotic way.
I was honored to have seen Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard on Broadway . I was overcome by emotions. She is truly one of the greatest actresses of all time.
I AM SO JEALOUS!
Lucky
I wish!
I was there, too. Words can't describe the power that a full orchestra and a talented performer like Glenn Close brings to every stage. I love the crispness of an orchestra in a theater...especially the strings.
I had Elaine...
Wow she is great, underrated by the critics
I saw this play in person she was Amazing.
Could not agree more
No one can do Norma like her
What? She’s been critically acclaimed on stage and screen (film and tv) for forty years!
You simply can’t better this… nobody does unhinged quite like Glenn.
I’m trying to work out if that’s a compliment 🤣🤣
@@user-kr1if4pg5s oh, it’s a compliment.
Betty Buckley rules this role!
She may be better at prose but Betty Buckley sang this so much better
@@Cynthia-du1fb I’m talking about the whole performance… and it’s just my opinion, as is yours.
Is anyone else as mesmerized by her mouth and lips as I am?! I just love the way she moves her mouth and the shape of her lips. Her chin is beautifully strong too. Her whole face is a work of art, and her mouth and chin is a lot like Julie Andrews, while her voice and smile make me think of Mary Martin. Great combo, great star!
true July Andres has the same kind of mimic as glenn close. Interesting u pointed that out :)
She’s acting through every part of her being
If nothing else, she was born to play Norma. Exquisite in every nuance.
Glenn Close is breathtaking...
Glenn Close was born for this role. If they ever make another movie adaptation she needs to be part of it.
I'm still waiting hoping and wishful thinking 😭
ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING !!! I can't believe I didn't watch this sooner, she totally embodies this character... and I didn't know she could sing so well!?!?!
and still no Oscar, she truly deserves one (a long time ago)
Welcome to the stupidity of the voters in Hollywood. She's brilliant, look how in character she is along with the music too. She may not have the that same voice of the huge Broadway stars, but she outshines them in character interpretation and performance, and to me the voice fits. Sometimes the greatest singers sing too well for the part if that makes any sense, in essence their voice just overpowers what the role is all about. Glenn Close just nails it.
Glenn Close has a spectacular voice, I didn't know she had a great singing voice! WOW!
Why did no one tell me she could sing like this??? I’ve been missing out! 😭
I had no idea either... I am shocked
😮 me to!
What an actor. And singer ❤
Did I mention Glenn Close can sing like this?
I guess that in her younger times it was part of the actor school...thats why
I had the FORTUNE of seeing her in this Broadway Revival!!! SHE WAS AMAZING!!! And I got her to sign my Playbill!!! Great experience!!!
wow how to do that? She comes out of the stage door????
Zinc Cuprum yep!
Manoli S. Whoaaa????!!!! But she didn't come out the last time I went there.
Zinc Cuprum when did you go?
Manoli S. March 28 or 29, forgot the exact date. And not much people are around stage door. Was I going to the wrong one? 😂
She is perhaps the greatest actress of stage screen and television of all time. I have chills. She amazes me.
Yes, she is so very
Wonderful in this and on film. Excellent work experience and you, an amazing editor. Thank you, love your time 😘 💗 ❤ giving the best
The Indians call it SHAKTI. DIVINE ENERGY. ITS VERY VERY POWERFUL. YOU KNOW IT QUICKLY WHEN YU MEET SOMEONE WITH SHAKTI. THEY ARE DIFFERENT. VERY HIGH ENERGY.
A virtuoso performance. This should be a chapter in the Musical Theatre Bible.
Glenn Close is a category for herself. Just listening to all these different notes she's hitting. She makes it look so easy. I could listen to this performance forever. so much power and feeling in there.
She acts every word of it. Brilliant.
GLENN CLOSE = THE ACTOR OF THE CENTURY!
What an incredible blend of glorious voice and spot-on perfection with her gestures and expressions! She uses gestures that would have been standard movie stylings of the silent era, but never allows it to go to campiness. Just WOW!
No she completely understood the role
Like the silent screen idols of the past, Miss Close has star quality in every fibre of her being. I can't wait to see her in action as Norma in London 2nd April 2016. Beyond excited!
Best Norma Desmond by far to me. She plays the role so damn well.
Glenn Close: one of the greatest acting talents alive today. This performance is beyond wonderful. To those few people who gave this video a thumbs down: a pox on all your houses!
Brilliance personified! 🎉
One of the most electric performances of all time!!!
Please make this a movie so Glenn will finally get her Oscar!!
Terrific! Cant take my eyes off her...eyes! Mesmerizing.
Piercing through the darkness, her eyes are, indeed, magnetic, and her grand gestures reach across the barriers of time, place, and convention to draw us into her gaze. She has created a kind of international style of Kabuki, and I am shocked to be saying that Mr. Weber's music hits the mark perfectly.
"International style of Kabuki". I like that!
I keep rewatching and rewatching and rewatching. This woman has such a strong presence on stage. You are just being drawn in by her completely. These movements, this gaze, this strong power. It's mesmerizing. I can't seem to look away. Everytime it sends shivers down my spine and I start crying when she talks about returning to her glory days. To posses such a power is incredible. I wish I could experience her live. That would be a dream come true.
This scene is a work of art
Having worked on stage and in movies. it is the material. She really camps it up with exaggerated movements and voice. Truly, she found a niche shtick. Thus, it is so much easier to overplay at role like she did. Like the heavies in the movies get the choice parts and the lethal dialogue like Clifton Webb in LAURA. But it is a much harder feat to underplay a role.
She has that effect on me too!
Watch the film, you will get the same emotion, it's brilliant.
Exactly!
I saw her in the Broadway revival; I didn’t realize she could sing but she nailed it!!
The first, and only, time in my life I’ve seen a standing ovation in the middle of a Broadway show….This. Her. Absolutely astounding performance.
Just love the nuances as she sings "girl next door" & "or the love that you've hungered for "
I keep coming back to Glenn Close and these songs. Absolutely brilliant!!
"A 'star' is a star is a star !" : Gertrude Stein
her presence and vocal talent are absolutely incredible.
The Fact that this Amazing Woman has NOT Won an Oscar is Just CRIMINAL!!!!! xoxoxoxo
glenn close is brilliant, underrated and deserves awards!!!!
I am always in awe when seeing this performance,. I return to it a few times a year just for the complete joy of seeing and hearing it again.
She just gave the best demonstration of "with one look you know all you need to know"...
She could easily have just stood there and sang the song. But not Glen Close! She was acting the part just like she did on the Broadway stage. Magnificent!!!
One of the most underrated actresses EVER.
Saw her in 2017, and she made my first ever musical experience extra special. I can’t wait for SB movie remake and I want her to FINALLY win her long overdue OSCAR. Also, pls try to see her latest movie The Wife, just give it a try ❤️
If she doesn't win the Oscar for the new film version, there's no justice!
They don't want me any more,
They all say I'm through
Well it's time they knew
With on look
I can break your heart
With one look
I play every part
I can make your sad heart sing
With one look you'll know
All you need to know.
With one smile
I'm the girl next door
Or the love that you've hungered for
When I speak it's with my soul
I can play any role
No words can tell
The stories my eyes tell
Watch me when I frown
You can't write that down
You know I'm right
It's there in black and white
When I look your way
You'll hear what I say.
Yes, with one look
I put words to shame
Just one look
Sets the screen aflame
Silent music starts to play
One tear from my eye
Makes the whole world cry.
With one look
They'll forgive the past
They'll rejoice: I've returned at last
To my people in the dark
Still out there in the dark
Silent music starts to play
With one look you'll know
All you need to know.
With one look
I'll ignite a blaze
I'll return to my glory days
They'll say Norma's back at last.
This time I'm staying
I'm staying for good
I'll be back
Where I was born to be
With one look
I'll be me
Gracias
: )
this is a proof of the miracles that a wonderful, stunning, incredible actress can make. Feeling privileged to witness to this even just on video :D Glenn Close
Shattering. Brilliant.
This is what happens when somebody follows his true calling
Through hard work and discipline she became what she is today
But still staying humble , while her talent shines the brightest
We should thank Glenn for sharing her Gift with the World
Glenn close makes me almost cry with this song. I love you Andrew Lloyd Webber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The determination in the eyes is seriously disturbing. FANTASTIC!!
vxn n ? Ok ce
Well Glenn Close is a truly accomplished actress, and the words in this song "I can play any role" absolutely come true, because she CAN. A very diverse actress. I haven't seen Sunset Boulevard but love the songs from the show and I have recently uploaded my version of this song on my YT, but after hearing Glenn (also I listened before to Elaine Paige for guidance), I'm not sure I did it justice. Anyway, I just wanted to write here to say how wonderful her performance was, and a surprise to me how great a singer. She just HAD to play the role of Norma. Quite some time ago, but I offer her my congratulations.
Incredible the way she replicates the gestures of a silent screen star . . . an immortal performance!
I was thinking the same
This woman is everything talent! Gorgeous, awsome, perfect singer, perfect actress!!

I totally agree! Love her
Totally impressed! Didn’t know Glenn Close can sing so well!
She truly can play any role. 🙌🙌❤️❤️
Glenn truely conveys the faded siren of the silent screen. I thinks she is just marvelous!
I saw this show at the Royal Albert hall, It was fantastic!! Best night ever.
I remember this She did a fantastic job.
Simply awed! Stunningly the best !
This is just perfect! I don’t know how many times I come back to this video
Only Glenn Close's magnificent, transcendental performance could exceed the
wonderful composition and Albert Halls theatrical grandeur. Non Plus Ultra!!!
Performers like her should live forever!
Good god the best version of this song by any performer ever!
I am tempted to use the f-word, this was flipping mind-blowing, so good, I love Glenn Close, crying like a baby, thank you for the share, I so wish I could have seen her perform this live.
She's just stunning!! as the previous poster said- she acts every word! She's Thrilling!!!
Glenn is perfect.
She really brings a strong presence which is crucial for this role. She is a wonderful singer and actress on Broadway, film and TV. Still waiting for her to get that Oscar.
Glenn Close is at the top when it comes to the best female vocalists and actresses in the world! Her talents are second to none. Well done Ms. Close!
Simply the best on all age does!! Glenn Close is a true ⭐️
What a tremendous performance by a great actress who is a great singer.
if they finally make this into a picture, Glenn wins the Oscar, guaranteed
She missed her calling being a hypnotist, but you know ... colossal talent got in the way.
Glenn Close is simply SUPERB,,,,,I always love her acting but here as a Norma Desmond it seems to me that she was born to sing and act this role,,,,,,SHE IS THE ONE !!!
Enthralling! Simply divine. How Glenn Close hasn’t won an Oscar is beyond mind-boggling.
i listen to this soundtrack everyday. Glenn Close is a marvel.
Glen Close is so talented! How passionate she is as she sings. She is a commensurate actress. I never realized she had a great voice. I would love to see the play, “Sunset Boulevard”.
I have the VCD of the entire concert, and this was the best performance, in my opinion. So much feeling. Jealous of all you people who get to watch her this year!
Fantastic performance! Just unbelievable! Got Norma Desmond to a tee ! Would love to see this on Broadway ! Bravo Ms Close xxx
Thanks for your beautiful committee and your support
Incredible. Got shivers down my spine. She acted the hell out of that song
One of my favorite musicals of all time and I was lucky enough to see Glenn as Norma Desmond. If you think this incredible, you should have seen her live and in person!!
The lines couldn't be more suitable for Ms. Close. With one look, she can convey multitudes. Watch her movie MAXIE, a beautifully created farce in which she essays the role of a dead 1920s star who enters the body of an 80s lady. As the '20s star, she was magnificent, especially while singing and enacting the part of Cleopatra. Glenn Close is spectacular as the iconic Norma Desmond.
man where have i been. i did not know that glenn sang and sounds good wow i have been missing out and i love great broadway singers. sorry glenn wow i just love to discover new things just would of liked knowing of her involvement in broadway cause i hate it when our generations stars get older, with not liking much of anyone now a days
Whaaaaa. I never knrw Glen Close could sing this great😬😫
Saw Glenn perform this last night on Broadway. It was an absolute honor and privilege to see her in her element and to see her live
I saw her today in "Sunset Boulevard "at London coliseum. She was absolutely brilliant!
Just saw her this past weekend at the Palace in NYC...her portrayal of Norma brought me to tears. As perfect a performance as I've ever seen. Catch it if you are able!
This "With One Look," staring Glen Close starts my day as a psychoanalyst (and many many moons ago a professional singer.) She is the epitome of Norma Desmond. No one else even comes close.
Right on!
Except Gloria Swanson, but obviously Swanson is the original original and didn't have to sing, so I still have to hand it to Glenn :)
Gloria Swanson was the best Norma, imo. She IS Norma. However, Glenn also does an amazing portrayal.
@@TheNotoriousDUDE THATS TRUE BUT UNFORTUNATLY GLORIA SWANSON IS NOT ALIVE BUT IF SHE WAS STILL ALIVE TODAY IM SURE THAT SHE WOULD BE HAPPY TO GO BACK TO THIS ROLE AND GLEEN IS ALSO GRAET
Masterclass acting from a great! I absolutely love her!
This show was so underrated. She was amazing in this.
Sunset Boulevard a classic remade ETERNAL....Thank you Glenn! Bravo!
I had no idea she could sing like this!!! Blows me away!!!!!!
Most old hags like her are knitting sweaters. It's quite impressive what she's doing
I love your voice. What a true talent.
Thanks for your beautiful committee and your e
I’ve watched this video many many times and yet to have a dry eye at the end of it. Simply stunning performance. She has the ability to pull every single person into the performance and sing it from the inside out. Awesome in every way.
Was so lucky to see her in Sunset Boulevard in the west end in London - amazing!
What a performance! Simply stunning!
Magnificent actress. Truly great and truly a legend.
Gosh... WHAT A QUEEN! ❤😱
They need to make this new S.B Movie happen ASAP! ❤
They'll start shooting in October!!! Can't wait to see this at the cinema!!!
She’d better win the Oscar for it!!
@@TheNewyorker009 I'm just concerned about the director... This will be his first film...
She nails it!
Simply the best!!! The performance stays with you for weeks.....
She plays this SO well! She really does look ever so slightly insane.
What a great talent. She's up there with Streisand.
Thank you.
