Long ball football is back. But it's being used less so by teams unable to build up from the back, but by elite teams like Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side.
So why are bigger clubs with solid technical players happy to hit the ball long? Jon Mackenzie takes a look at why Premier League sides are bringing back long balls.

My grandad will be thrilled. "Play the long ball! " and "you can't beat the long ball" are some of his favourite phrases while watching football, along with "wing it!" and "why do they keep running backwards?!"
proper football boot it down the pitch 4-4-2 big 9 small 9
And defenders? " 'OOF IT !! OOF IT !"

The majority of the English fans, people who knows nothing about football, who are risk averse and have boring football in their DNA, would love it.
Play the LONG BALL? 😏😏
You know you’ve stayed up too late when you’re awake for a Tifo upload
tifo throwing my sleep issues back in my face with every post
Real. It’s 1:30 am rn for me
Literally same, 3 AM here but i don't mind waking up a lil bit later !
5pm in Sydney perfect system
3:40 am in the states 😂
The modern game has been crying out for it for a long time, teams are leaving themselves hopelessly exposed to the long ball and the irony of Man City being the team that effectively ended long ball culture being the first to bring it back is not lost on me.
The thing about Pep is that he's a student of the game and is always willing to apply a tactical change if it wins. Because he has guided footbal so far way from the long ball, now he gets to revitalize it and keep using it until others get hip. His advantage is constantly being ahead of the curve and not being stuck to one way of playing.
@@karabomasibi2331 100% sometimes I think he sets the meta just so he can wait till all the other teams adopt it and exploit them 🤷♂️

Really love the way how jon explains. He explains everything in detail even if it is small known things to football fans and the pace he does is easy to follow even for any non-native english speaker.
Agreed. Incredible written English for a non-native speaker by the way.
Man I am addicted to your channel, I never thought there was so much more to learn about systems.
Me too fr

Looks like a big reason for Pep's successful career is constant innovation.
That howling intro is one of the best I've seen! It had me cracking up and instantly hooked on the video, great as always
I loved the subtle little animation where Ederson kicks the ball off Jon's head.
I’m pretty sure like all things, football is a cycle. -when a team figures out a very effective way of play, all the other teams try to implement it with what they have, and usually there’s an exploit that happens as many teams start doing those same brand new tactics. And then the person or team who spots this uses it against everyone, and now the top managers who have implemented the new style of play must figure out how to stop that exploit, and it become a cycle
And the reason for Man City's dominance is that pep is always willing to learn new systems and apply them so City are always among, if not the first, teams willing to attempt the new thing. Never being too far behind the new tactical innovation and then once everyone goes to the new way, he can quickly revert to the old
the problem is, Man City is also good at short football.
Long football is another option especially with Ederson.
So, yes. Man City is still a scary team.
When I played with a CFG coach a couple of years his advice to me as a GK when we implemented pressing was to read the pitch, if the 6 knocked the ball back to me from a goalkick it probably means they are pressing very high so there's gonna be space for the attackers to run into if I can hit a long ball to them. Pressing is a wonderful tool that many misinterpret
The "when people think of long ball football what they think of" in the first 20 seconds of the video is the correct description of Manchester United. I don't think there's any one of Europe's top 50 team quite so bad and playing through the phases.
🤣 damn ...

Tifo have Jon working hard, these IRL videos, narrating Tifo vids and the podcast. All for it, guy is great.
Somewhere in Europe, van Gaal is sat smiling.

And Cruyff rolled over in his grave crying

I think we haven’t seen an elite mid/low block team for some time. Mourinho’s Inter or Simeone’s Atleti are good examples - mid block with excellent pressing traps. Spanish teams are the best examples of low blocks and they have the ability to control the tempo hence why they’re good in Europe. It’s nice to see a striker like Haaland after all the false 9s we’ve seen. Proper penetrative player who can ruin a team with a high line.
Yea Sevilla Outplayed City in Super Cup Final.
I read it elsewhere, but it also fits this video.
It seems that the current pressing meta of football has pushed the playmaker even further back than the deep lying midfielder and now with the likes of ederson, onana and others, it is the goalkeeper who has stepped into that role.
At point every manager is competing for second place. Guardiola is miles ahead.
That IR Tanger kit looks great on Jon
The last season metrics was for the entire season, right? The sample sizes don't match for comparison. We can't compare one game against a whole season. It's possible the average numbers over this season will remain the same as last.
What a beautiful illustration. Really loved this. Greaet work jon!
This video is still in the intro ad but this is the most anticipated todo video I’ve ever wanted hahaha. Thank you guys. I’m a tifo fan almost 5+ years!
Graham Taylor used to say it was a long pass, not a long ball.
Very in depth. Good job.
Amazing video - really enjoyed it!
This is why Arsenal signed Rice Havertz and Raya. So interesting to learn all this.
Nothing here just jon rocking IR TANGER kit 😊
Always top videos from Tifo, but this in particular is a really great analysis. Top work team.
This is such good analysis
That intro is everything. The enthusiastic delivery of that title line followed by the howl, I was on the floor 😂

Yes, started in small 3 years ago, 2 years ago it became a safety valve, last year it was in the tactics.
Fantastic job Jon 🤝
If only Xavi had this kind of fast adaptability of tactics within the game.
Wait until Eintracht Frankfurt start having a big lump up front to challenge for percentage balls.
Tifo: the combative area genius Samuel Alle'dyce's revolutionary take on football.

Great videos!
Long balls have always been an option for Ederson. He once assisted Aguero, and that tells you he's been kicking it long for a quite a while now.
That kit tho 💙👑🔥🔥
So, Todd Boehly was right about the 4-4-3 formation all along
You killed the podcast!
I love a good 40 yard plus pass. There is an absolute skill to it. Remind me of Beckham, Stevie G, Lampard and scholes
Sure thing mate. Everyone loves a pirlo.
It becomes shite when every ball is sent in 40 yards into the striker to try to wrestle something out with the cbs every single time over and over again like most English teams have played forever
People who hate on long ball:
• Top 5 team fans who loose points to it.
• Football hipsters
• Football spectators
Nope, appreciate technical football. When you've witnessed teams that can perform with the ball rather than smash and grab, it's hard to go back, at least for me.
Any idea what software/screens they use on the vids?
i dont agree with comparing one game's stats against a season. You're taking a single point of measurement against an averaged (de-noised) dataset. So a change on one stat (especially so when its a smaller difference) could mean something, or could not. You wouldnt know for sure
Comparing a whole season’s stats vs one single game against Burnley
❤ love your Contents gyus❤
One of your best tactical videos yet - Viewers need to order the Tifo team more Coffee !
Shame City don't have Sane still. Feel he'd be lethal with Haarland up front...
Matilda's were great at using these transitions in the World Cup.
I think the game vs Burnley gives a skewed picture. It was very obvious that City did it cause Burnley was so easy to play through. If Burnley had been moving and marking properly, then City wouldn’t have been able to do it, and they would have build up differently
Arsenal just bought a goalie that plays more accurate long passes and they also bought havertz and they're banking on him helping bypass man to man by the goalkeeper hitting it long to him. Manchester united just burnt every bridge with de gea in order to get a goalkeeper that plays long passes too and they also bought a centre forward that will fit that kind of game. Long balls are back in fashion.
I think what the game really showed is Guardiola's tactical mind, switching through multiple systems, rotating around players, until he finally finds the weakness in the opposition side. This match the weakness was long balls.
basically the alisson to salah pass
"Long ball" used to mean just launching the ball forward and hoping. Now, "long ball" just means extraordinarily accurate long passes. Ederson's ability to make a "long pass" is another tool in the tool box that will stretch defenses.
The circle is complete.
"I love talking about pressing" got a laugh from me even before i read the text
I'd like you guys to do a post match analysis show.
That wolf call was elite. Joe Devine would be proud.
The team is sweeping forward 💪
Kick and rush yes
Pressure to score 💪🎼 352
The best example of this is Newcastle. We will play out from the back but if any team presses us aggressively, we go long - partly because we can't play out from the back but also because we have fast wingers. Even though Pope is awful at long balls, Schar, Trippier and Bruno are good at them that it results in a lot of chances for us. This is why even teams like Arsenal are selective when they press us.
In other words📎
This is how Man utd beat Newcastle in the League Cup Finals last season by out maneuvering Newcastle's pressings easily with long balls.
When you see Pep uses long balls a lot that means he's not a strong wiled, but it means he has a flexibility of tactic.
I read the title of this video in Coach Beard's voice! It's kind of funny considering the last season of Ted Lasso was about total football.
Stick it in the mixer!
No team in EPL used man-to-man marking more than Yoonited last season.... that's why they would find it hard to switch their approach this season.
you folk are underrated
Based IRT rep in TIFO, lovely video as always
Just know that when you say "40 yards" in my head I have the image of 40 houses with backyards because I have absolutely to reference what a yard that means.
its all come full circle..
What’s the standard deviation for Ederson’s launched pass completion from last season though? You can’t take the data from one game and compare it to all of last season.
The team names 🤣
Manchester united's play style for years lol
Are you wearing an Ittihad of Tangier kit ? 😅 that’s my city.

nice howl bro
This season? It's only been one game!😅
"They just yeet the ball long" - get thumbs up just for that
I love how Yeet is a commonly used verb now 😅
Pep evolve Tiki Taka to counter team that sitting deep, playing shorter pass and control the game from back to front, but now, many young managers plays modern or positive football, applying high press, it would be a problem for old Pep, but the new Pep is different, he's willing to change his tactics to be fluid and ready to counter any other teams tactics, and the counter of high press is long ball, but you need right players to do so, and Man City got Haaland.
I wonder if Premier league footballers or coaches watch Tifo?
Eh yoo!!!! IR Tanger kit, what are the odds.

Probably on the athletic but I will have to check.
Do you play fpl?... you'd be so good in it?
This sound like a new thing, but it is not. It is just that people close their eyes (including analysts) when they’ve bought into a narrative in vogue. Both Liverpool and Manchester City have always used long balls. It never went away.
Do you remember Sam Allardyce saying this five or six years ago? People ignored or laughed at him, but he was right.
But of course it is a good narrative to pursue now and pass off as something new. It is not!
Great video. Though i wouldn't mind a slower talking pace, even if the video becomes a little longer.
So that’s why Arsenal signed Raya
I like Tifo but how do you base what's happening this season off one games data? Pep might have absolutely ripped them for playing wrong for all we know
Sure, when Moyes and Dyche does it, they're dinosaurs. When Pep does it, he's a genius.
John Beck and Joe Kinnear looking for a return to the big time!
He had a close call against Inter and is incorporating their game now
