A sewing kit is essential but owing a sewing machine is a game changer. It more than pays for itself. Yes, there is a learning curve, but you can repair things much more quickly. One can make their own apron :)

@susancurson4488- Agreed on owning a sewing machine! There are actually many tutorials on CZcams that can help you learn how to mend or hem items. I’m having to cut off some of my longer dresses because as I’ve gotten older, I’m shrinking! 😂 Well age plus herniated discs and a lumbar back fusion also contributed to me being shorter.🙄

One thing I never would have forseen is cast-iron pans. There's almost zero cleanup, no toxic chemicals or scraping, they cook beautifully, and the Lodge ones I got years ago are still going strong. You can even use them for baking! I anticipate having these guys until I'm too old to cook, and then someone else can have them and change their life, too. Best forty bucks I ever spent. Cast-iron pans and pots are what we call legacy items. A long time ago those pans (Lids, Dutch ovens etc.) were passed down from generation to generation. From daughter to daughter. They can still be passed down today. They are great! And every time you use your metal spatula on them a little bit of iron gets into the food keeping your people healthy!❤

I came to same conclusion you did about shoes and foot pain. Maybe close to twenty years ago, I paid $5 at Goodwill for a pair of SAS shoes. Those were the first shoes I'd had in decades that I could wear all day without experiencing foot pain. So after wearing them nearly constantly for several years, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new pair (because I knew they'd last long enough to justify the high price -- and they are the most expensive shoes I've ever purchased). I've bought three or four more new pairs over the years, and wouldn't be without them. Bonus: SAS shoes are made in US.

I appreciate that you proactively call yourself out on things you were wrong about. Many people either pretend it didn't happen, or dismiss it (especially on youtube!). Thankyou for that. I think THAT should be what is trending. I get that an air fryer isn't something super important to the big picture like ending hunger or creating world peace, yet it is important to how you live your life now. Imagine what the past 'never have an air fryer' version of you (or 'never use a toaster oven'!) would be living like. To acknowledge something you were wrong about privately and do something about it is sadly a rare thing, let alone stating this on social media/a youtube video. Thankyou, and thankyou for doing it in the way you did. You didn't dismiss it, swiftly change the subject, turn it into an apology (because an apology isn't really necessary for this), or attack yourself and/or others due to this. I really wish I could have the confidence, as well as your eloquence in being able to do this for myself (especially without attacking or insulting myself!) with things I am wrong about.

Even w/ security systems , it's both interesting & concerning how many people leave curtains open day & night to see directly in , etc. Privacy issues ? ? I always opened & closed drapes , lights on 'n off , timers & security alarms checked , etc. as part of my services - even varied the routine so as to make an empty home look lived in . Owners appreciated these small but useful attention to details . 🥰

For sure quality shoes. I have wasted a lot of money on sandals, shoes, boots, and drugstore insoles instead of another pair of insoles from The Good Feet Store. My garage freezer saves me a lot because I buy meat when it's a good price and divide it into freezer bags. I bought a chest freezer during the pandemic because that's all I could find and just bought an upright freezer from Costco during the Labor Day sale. An upright is easier to see everything and I don't have to take everything out to get whatever is on the bottom. My daughter uses my chest freezer now.

Regarding shoes--cancer on my spine led to scoliosis and multiple back surgeries. I am on pain killers daily and now walk with a cane (sometimes two canes). BTW--64 years old and my 97 year old mother moves faster than I do--that's how bad, Bending is difficult and I pretty much had to replace all of my shoes as I was a lace-up rather than loafers kind of guy. In my younger years I had both cooked and bar tended professionally and remembering a lesson from an older chef I worked under I got on line, found some traditional Scandinavian clogs. The traditional wood base is perfect support and I don't have any problems even doing stairs. My go to daily shoes.

Jennifer! I did the same with respect to toaster oven. I have stopped using my microwave and sold it. Instead I got a small toaster oven that has an option of air fryer as well. And this serves all the purpose of heating, toasting, and air fryer plus saves me space. To top is all, I got it from a thrift store and it was an amazing deal. Love my decision ❤

I got an air fryer as an early Christmas gift and I absolutely love it. I use it everyday and because I am the only person in my home I have used the stove very little and probably will not need to use the large oven much at all. Several years ago I was given a pressure cooker and because I have a small kitchen it was stored in the basement. Needless to say it wasn't being used. Recently I made room on the counter for it and it is a fantastic appliance. I made homemade soup in less than 20 minutes and cooking meat recipes takes 20 minutes also. The other thing that I have used for 50 years is a complete set of Griswold cast iron frying pans and Dutch oven. They are the best non stick cookware ever made. To clean it just takes a drop of dish, soap, water, and a non scratching pad to quickly wipe it. The food browns beautifully, and it retains the heat so you use less energy. The pans I use are probably 80-100 years old.

You inspired me to thin down my sewing supplies (I have a whole craft cabinet full of just sewing stuff, some I purchased and some inherited from my grandmothers) and re-stock my little sewing basket. I still have a sewing machine and a serger, but I'm just not doing a lot of sewing anymore. (There are four boxes of fabric in storage upstairs, and that's after giving over half of my stash away a few years ago....) The little sewing basket should be more than sufficient for anything I need to do in the foreseeable future.
On the small appliances/air fryer/toaster oven front, I don't use a regular kitchen range at all. I cook solely with small appliances. It's just two of us, me and my handicapped youngest daughter, and I've found we just don't need the big range anymore. We still have a microwave, though when this one kicks the bucket I probably won't replace it. I have a small toaster oven/air fryer, and when that kicks the bucket I probably won't replace it, either. We do have a one-burner induction hotplate, but it's stored in a cupboard; I haven't used it in several months. What I *am* using for almost everything now is a Ninja electric pressure cooker/air fryer (the 8 qt model). It does almost everything we need to do (though I don't like the inner pot that came with it, and plan to replace that soon) -- I fry in it, bake, roast, slow cook, pressure cook, air fry, and I could make yogurt or dehydrate or sous vide. The inner pot is wide enough to comfortably handle frying foods, and the high sides prevent almost all of the splashing grease that was a problem when using a frying pan. (We are on the carnivore diet for medical reasons -- it's very effective, by the way -- so fry a lot of hamburger and so on.) Once in a while it's handy to be able to use two of the small appliances at the same time, but I seldom need more than one at a time. Usually if I need two, it's because I've got something slow-cooking in the Ninja pot. The other thing that we use daily is the electric kettle.
And you are so right about aprons! My mother and grandmother used to wear them, but I'd gotten out of the habit. Then I realized I was having trouble finding something to wear to town that didn't have stains from grease spots on it. I don't spend a lot of money on clothes, but an apron sure does make what I have last longer!

As for the air fryer , I’am not sold , maybe I’am just so used to using the oven and do it out of habit , I usually cook a few different things at the same time as I bulk cook and freeze in portions .

Something that saved me a lot over time was individual clear boxes with top that fit in my hall closet. Gloves, hat, scarfs, and miscellaneous outdoor stuff went into each persons box. No mix ups, no yelling “I can’t find my ….” If I see it , it goes in the persons box, everyone loved there box coming and going. My husband even kept spare sun glasses in his box so he would know where to find quickly. Everyone loved their box. The boxes saved frustration, but also losing a glove or taking someone else’s glove. After starting the boxes I never had to buy a new pair of gloves because theirs could not be found.

Hi, Jennifer ! Yes ! I find houses fascinating ! We've gone on house tours & to me, they are so intriguing. I love how much personality some houses have.
Sewing kit...would be lost w/out mine. Manicures....have never gone to have a manicure or pedicure in my life. Don't plan to. I can do it myself & save a ton of money. We have a food vacuum thing & I love it. This is another thing I'd be lost w/out. Just yesterday we got 3 pkgs. of chops clearance priced....I'll be put them in vacuum bags. It makes food last MUCH longer in the freezer. As far as being a stain magnet, welcome to the club ! Thought I'd get past it when I grew up, but....nope ! Aprons are wonderful ! Grandma knew! And then toaster ovens. Funny. For several years after we got married, we couldn't see the sense in an oven that small. But it finally dawned on us, after baking 2 potatoes in a cavernous oven....or a couple small pot pies.....that's crazy! Those things can be baked in a toaster oven! So, we got one. Now, we wouldn't ever be w/out one. We use it 99% of the time over the big oven. So many things can be cooked in a toaster oven! We don't have an air fryer. But our toaster oven has a convection option.
Smart husband to put your apron on to cook bacon. And now I'm going to finally order an apron for me & I'll be wearing it to eat because I'm telling you, especially if I just put on clean clothes, food is going to land on them. Guaranteed.

For me, it's my car, believe it or not. After 5 years (18k miles on it only), it has cost me ca $20 a day all included. My car saves me a lot of time and time is money.
Because I live close to work and drive, I get called in when someone calls out. Being called in for few hours means I make a lot more per hour the others make as I go there just for the "rush". Few workers can do it on short notice. At work we get free food/drinks, and can take plenty of food at home. 3-4 hours at work means I simply exercised and have time to get my kids from school. Short shift also means I'm not tired, and I usually escape getting a parking ticket.
I have given my co-workers rides for free or symbolic money. I pick up "free" treasures from street if I indeed could use the item. My car makes grocery hopping much easier/faster. I know my rock bottom prices because I driven to many stores like Aldi and Lidl. I'm not stuck to 1-2 nearby.
