Did PSA Fix My 5.7 Rock?

  • ‪@PalmettoStateArmoryVideos‬ sent me a new barrel per a warrenty claim and I see if this new barrel will solve the reliability issues I've been having with my 5.7x28 Rock pistol. In particular I've been having reliability issues with AAC ammunition so I take my new barrel out to the range and 100 rounds to test it out.

    Good to hear. My Rock is at PSA right now for repair. I have about 14 failures during the first 100 rounds. This was the shorter barrel as well. I have a second Rock with the threaded barrel which did not have any issues during the first 100 rounds.

    Outstanding! My new PSA Rock has been flawless, whereas my old M&P 5.7 gave me nothing but trouble despite sending it back to Smith and Wesson. Ended up selling it, and just sticking with my Rock.
    So far I've fired 1000 rounds with my Rock, a variety of ammo brands and types (including red box FN and VO Black Fang) and I've had no problems. That thing is solid and reliable. I'm so happy with it - and the price is unbeatable!
    Thanks for your videos.

    Absolutely, glad they fixed you up. I am with you on the ammo. I would have probably jumped on 5.7 bandwagon years ago when there was only 2 guns that fired it, both FN's. The problem was the bang for the buck. It was crazy expensive. The round has great properties and poor properties. To me the greatest property is it is very lightweight. A person can carry thousands of rounds with ease. So, it potentially is the greatest survival round. It is capable of killing any animal in North America. Not good at it but capable of it. I might grab the 57 Charger to test on hogs. Obviously it is a poor choice but, still I am just curious how effective it could be.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Man please do a video on what it does for hogs!!! I want to see that. My big concern with the round is getting ammo to penetrate deep enough. Most bullets tend to grenade. Yah I’m very glad more companies are getting on this and I hope more ammo comapnies follow.

      @triggerbarPhD I doubt I will ever make another video again. Now if I do end up getting the Ruger or the PSA when it is available, we can go on Big J's chat and discuss it. He is going down the 5.7 rabbit hole too. He has a 57 pdw in the works. There is a ton of cool stuff out now and sometimes I wish I could weigh in on it.

    I like the soapbox TB. Not just for the ammo, but I'm more than glad I didn't chase an FN pistol down this rabbit hole. I still give a big hat's off to PSA for
    Any quick comment if the brass needs heavier sizing? Small primers, small charges and maybe relatively good bullet prices, maybe not the worse cartridge to help ride out market ups and downs at the handloading bench.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Před 6 měsíci +2

      5.7 is a bit challenging to reload, but can be done. First it needs either the lacquer coating to not be harmed by the cleaning process (I just put simple green in a bucket and stir my brass by hand for about 15 minutes and that’s it), or you have to buy some lacquer that Elite ammunition sells to recoat it (or just chuck the brass that losses too much lacquer as I do…). You’d probably be a better expert than me on how much sizing needs to be done and if just a neck resize will do but my experience is it needs a deep full resizing as the bottom of the case expands too. And yes, since it’s just normal .224 bullets that’s very simple l, you just want 40 grain and lower for it. Though I have some 55 grain I plan to try and make some reliable sub sonic rounds as a pet project. Most people like true blue powder or AA #7. I’ve heard the smaller sellers of 5.7 ammo use small rifle primers but I’ve just been using small pistol primers so either works. And thanks again for watching!!

    Mine is currently at PSA waiting to be fixed. Almost every single rd is a failure to eject. I have to rack the slide by hand to eject the case and pick up the next rd. Sometimes when hand cycling, the rd won't go into battery all the way. I have to smack it in. Sound like a tight chamber? Used FNH and Federal ammo. They also have my JAKL in for repair. Not impressed.

    6:32 - I have to take issue with your claim that it can't beat 9mm. If you are only speaking in terms of energy ft-lbs, then you are correct. 9mm is slightly more powerful. End of that story.
    But in terms of "beating" it, there's more than just energy. I know you know this - as you alluded to it...just stating it generally & jumping on that one phrasing you did.
    To me, "beating" comes down to putting effective rounds accurately on target. Can 5.7 beat 9mm in that category? It sure can. It can beat .44 mag.
    It's all situational and many factors involved. But being slightly less powerful should not be the only vector by which things are given a win vs a loss. That would overlooking way too much other info. If I have 6 javelinas aggressively coming my way, I want a 5.7 on my hip vs. 9mm. That scenario is why I got into 5.7. I felt quite vulnerable after being chased and having 9mm jhp on me.
    Same goes if 7 coyotes direct their attention towards me on a dog walk.
    PSA coming through clutch for you! People should give them a good look & consider buying from them.
    It's provoked me to pull out my barrel and start getting some photos and taking it back to the range. I had problems with AAC but only shot a very few rounds.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Před 6 měsíci

      Fair enough, yes I was speaking to just pure energy ft-lbs per round. Shot placement will always win but my concern with this round is finding a good production one for penetration. As you know and as I’ve learned from you, my concern is with the rounds that are available and how they either are so weak (gold dot) or explode at 5”-8”. I have questions about whether or not these rounds will make it to the vitals. But I get it. My little demonstration here reminded me how easy it is to get accurate shots on target with this gun. That cannot be excused. At the end of the day that’s going to take care of most situations.

    • @ShastaBean
      @ShastaBean Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@triggerbarPhDI could go into it at length as to why, but I am nowhere near the believer in penetration that so many (maybe most?) are.
      I think the FBI invented their standards around what was a failure in preparation and execution of a raid/sting and to lay the blame at the foot of the Silvertip, by claiming it missed the heart by an inch.
      A shot to the heart is in no way a guarantee to instantly stop a threat.
      And the 12" min is absurd, to me. It's one scenario of shot through a shoulder/upper arm that comes close to measuring that far.
      12" through my sternum means it's exited the back (~10 total from front to back for me). I know others are larger, but still.
      LEO might have situations of a threat being fired upon by several angles, sure. In a defensive situation? I don't see it being as likely.
      I'm moving more towards fragmenting rounds to create more threat-stopping damage than I believe having the entire mass moving through the same wound, expanded bullet or not.
      I feel like if those Agents in Miami all had 5.7...things would have been very different.
      One of their biggest problems was misses.

      @@triggerbarPhD You are probably aware of the video, that Reeves did.
      AAC bargain 5.7, with the 40gr VMax bullet, maybe what you were using here? Out of a PSA, it was able to pass through what he described as level II kevlar panels, that are supposed to be able to stop 9mm.
      Possibly, there are different types of lack of penentration. Do the job, have a bit of margin for getting through some things, dumping some energy, but less likely to end up in the background? In total, yup the nine's good too, lol.

    • @crxtodd16
      @crxtodd16 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@triggerbarPhD I'd love for you to give the VO Black Fang a good try. They have been very reliable for me, and they pack a punch with excellent velocity and penetration. Also have been accurate for me. I think they should be a primary consideration for a defensive round. They'll go through body armor types that no 9mm can get through - and perhaps that means something in a situation where you'd be facing a dangerous animal. (I'm not saying it's the ideal animal defense round, but perhaps it can be better than 9mm in some ways)
      Just a thought. I appreciate your videos and all the work you do producing them!
