It might be “lazy” but it’s still one of my favorite games in the series. The music was excellent, it’s not as broken as X Men vs SF, and the announcer and Intro were the hypest thing ever. And come on man, Cyber Akuma. CYBER AKUMA
It's also how i got my practice with Omega Red
@Orlanzo Damn right!
My feelings exactly.
In terms of gameplay is better than x men vs Street fighter.
Shame the roster
@@Maximilian_Dood Yo Max! Didn't expect a reply, lol. Keep up the amazing work man!
here's a mind blowing fact for y'all -
Venom (MVC) is a recycled sprites of Sabretooth (XMVSF) with renovations on his symbiote's head, hands/claws, legs/feets etc. They hinted it at similar air throw that both had.
Try to compare it sprite by sprite, then you'll see it
Holy shit.....they share the same sprite!?!?!?!?! i never knew this!!!!!
And thus they pioneered the MUGEN method for making characters (Superman is Magneto)
To be fair, the head and when he pounces, with all the liquidness, that's all pretty complex still. You'd think I'd be easier to just make everything from scratch though, but I'm not a sprite animator.
@@cyberninjazero5659 fr every DC character in Mugen is either Cap, Psylocke, or Urien
It's hilarious how people use Marvel as an example of how huge fighting game rosters used to be, when they completely ignore that they're almost all recycled content accumulated from 5+ years of different games.
That works. You take all of the characters from the previous games and shove them in one game. "Everyone is here"
Ultra Street Fighter IV brilliantly implemented the new characters from SFxT, making it a packed roster. That's a modern triumph, even if it was years in the making and a little predatory, in the end, the final product is huge, just like the old ones.
@@Potidaon It's not just them, I remember when Strive came out, a lot of people were pointing at Xrd as a point of reference for the game's small roster, completely ignoring that nearly half the roster was brought in through updates and DLC.
Exactly, MVC2 is an accumulation if ALL the characters from the VS Games, individually X Men Vs SF was the largest roster the rest were smaller
@@Carlitonsp1 Right, only MK, TEKKEN and KOF have large launch rosters
You know what this game really DID bring to the table, for the first time ever?
A Color 2 for Akuma that doesn't suck.
Akuma’s P2 color continues to be my favorite color palette ever for him. I’ll take white hair/eyes Akuma over Akuma with a red gi any day.
I think the main reason Omega Red was picked is because they finally had the Voice actor from the show being able to actually voice him in game, in COTA he was the only VA missing i believe
I've always looked at Omega Red and thought, using him as a base, it wouldn't have been too difficult to put Doctor Octopus in a fighting game. Which weirdly enough, I don't think he has ever been in one. In spite of the fact I think he'd be really good.
@@pious83 doc ock was actually known to have been worked on for Marvel 3 but was cut
(my guess is his tentacles were really difficult to animate)
@@Limit02 I know with Marvel 3 they cut Venom, Blackheart etc due to the difficulty in making them work with their 3D engine. But realistically, Doc Ock wouldn't be too dissimilar to Dhalsim, on a practical level.
@@pious83 dammnn Blackheart was my MvC2 main and I always wanted Doc Ock in MvC.
@@pious83 gameplay wise yeah, but with doc ock all 4 arms would have probably been moving at once even in an idle animation. I watched a gdc talk from one of the animators on spider-man ps4 and they talked about how difficult doc ock’s arms were to work on, and that was for a game made for ps4 hardware
Capcom Fighting Evolution: “Am I a joke to you?”
Leith Aziz PAGY what about Norimaru?
Yes. A complete joke
@@agentofstars2667
barely even counts cuz he only exists in one region.
@@leithazizpagy4699 Only one I can think of (besides Norimaru) is Cyber-Akuma, which is basically heavily edited normal Akuma sprites. I mean they could've cut even more corners and just had Shin Akuma instead who uses the exact same sprite set as his normal self.
Yes, yes you are. And you aren't even a good yolk either
I like how MvC2 gets away with being lazy while this game gets reviewed harshly. This game actually has more production values than MvC2.
It's probably for good reason, y'know? Like, MVC2 has so many new features that MSHvsSF doesn't.
@@thebandanadee8265 Not to mention, they also make memorable original characters, stages, and themes.
MvC2 is terrible.
MVC2 has a bunch of new sprites
Yeah, it’s a little lazy, re-using the sprites. But at the same time, IT WORKED!! And it set up for the inevitable craziness of MARVEL VS CAPCOM!!
Blackheart is still one of the coolest looking sprites in a fighting game
Too bad he's about as important of a character in the grand scheme of things as Marrow.
It would be neat if they put Mephisto in the next mvc game and gave him some of Blackheart's moves & a Blackheart alternate skin to boot.
Agree
@@portsyde3466 actually, you should see Blackheart in the Miles books, he's fantastic
I remember being HYPED when he was announced as the villain for the Ghost Rider movie... :'-(
The roster doesn't suck...when else are you going to play as Sakura or Dan in a pre-MvC2 VS game? Plus Shuma-Gorath and Blackheart! A crazy roster with some picks that should have been carried on into MvC1.
Also in this game Dan's shinku hadoken does insane block damage. Just block it and you'll see what I mean.
Two things I'll never forget specifically with this specific game, in the series.
1. The Announcer goes absolutely nuts in this game. -- It's like he has to say everything. Any special move or super you finish with, he has to announce it before saying "K.O." To the point it's even hilarious hearing him say the Japanese moves with such excited gusto. In fact, back in the arcade, my college buddies used to poke fun at the idea of other things he could say. Like the dramatic way it looks if the final winning move was Hulk's Fierce. Whoever is playing Hulk would say, "That's My Bike Punk!" referencing Friday. And one of us would imitate the announcer saying, "Yeah!! That's His Bike Punk! K. O.!"
2. The Combination Team Supers. -- It's all about mix and matching, and finding those awesome team ones. Sometimes with surprising hidden team ups. Though, I think the Zangief/Hulk one is still my favorite.
I played the heck out of this game as I was buying all these fighters on my Sega Saturn complete with Capcom's nice 4 MB Memory Expansion cartridge. Those were the days, when Saturn was really flexing its 2D muscle and we were seeing these incredible Large Sprite Arcade games finally get good representation on a home console. A turning point.
I ikr the announcer is best thing in this game.
I will never get sick of the announcer yelling out the specific supers of the characters in this game. It always has been an extra incentive to win a match with a super for me. I was so disappointed when they didn't bring that back for MvC.
"You can spam MP in the air so fast?"
This was basically the meta of my arcade. You pick Wolverine + some other guy, super jump, MP spam, fill up your meter, then you start playing.
I do not think this game is lazy in terms of assets. The last game reused sprites and characters like this game but new characters like Dan, Sakura, and more are given new animations and mechanics. The new ui and background effects on all screens is the best in the franchise in my opinion, we have the new tag team mechanic, completely new soundtracks, plus recolored levels.
Funny thing about this game, this is where I got introduced to Sakura as I had no arcades around me that had Alpha 2 cabinets, lol.
Love this game, no matter how lazy it was. It was my first hyper fighting game.
Yes man it's so understood! Some dope stage designs too
I for one never got the chance to play this game
Wth is hyper fg?
@@PiccoloNamexio Good question dude. Hyper fighting games are games that have high speed movement, crazy combos and an elevated level of energy. Think of the MVC series, DBFZ, X-men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, and most recent games that have a "Turbo" feel. It's not a term used much but it was thrown around in early 00's
i still remember when i defeated Cyber Akuma for the 1st time in this game (playing as Hulk), back in 2000. i was jumping for all over my house lol
What haunts my dreams: this game's announcer yelling ARE YOU READY FOR A NEW CHALLENGER?!?!?!?
I miss the arcade in my neighborhood where they had all of the vs games. Bring that back
This glorious game ate sooooo many of my quarters in college.
MVSF is a lazy Marvel game, but I really love the fact that every single Street Fighter character got a new theme and they all match, Ryu's is has a determend theme, Ken's care free attitude fits in his theme, Zangief's is my favorite for how hype it is, Bison has a very Super Villiain vibe, Sakura has the best theme overall.
Not only that they introduced the hidden recolor characters that have references to Marvel. BlackHeart is Mephisto, Spider-Man becomes Armored Spider-Man from the 90's cartoon I think. Captain America's black suit sprite is U.S. Agent, an actual character I thought Capcom made up but it's a real Marvel character. Capcom got a weird recolor reference but I love that 2 out of the 3 become transform supers in MvC2.
And best of all, This is the only game that gives Wolverine a red color in his Jim Lee design. Can't believe MvC2 had 12 colors for Wolverine and none of them have red. Beat that, Capcom Fighting Evolution.
Cool, but A. I've always preferred Wolverine with Brown highlights instead of Red (even if it's more accurate to the source material), and B. I can't stand M. Bison's/VEGA's/Dictator's theme in this game. But Ken and Omega Red's themes always brings me to tears, so that kind of makes up for it...
Lol Also Marvel 2 is the KING or recyled sprites and ugly uninspired backgrounds.
It's not a lazy marvel game
I too remember thinking Omega Red was an unusual choice for this game, but hey, we got a remix of that awesome theme music he had in CoTA, so it's all good!
For me is much better than XvsSF and MvC1.
The Ost, The Announcer, The presentation... the roster is the only weak thing.
Is the superior version of X-Men Vs. Street Fighter.
this... I prefer this over xvssf and mvc1 for the same reasons.
No new sprites?
Fatal Claw
Shin Shouryuu Ken
Otoko Michi
(Shinkuu) Tengyou Hadou Ken
These are all newly drawn sprites for the aforementioned moves. Ken and Ryu's backdashes were also redone as well as Ryu's forward dash.
Good eye on those new back dash animations! This game has my favorite for Ryu.
I believe also another reason why Omega Red is in this game is due to Dr. Doom and Iron Man not being able to be added due to some licensing issues (another reason why its War Machine instead of Iron Man on the first Marvel vs Capcom).
Yea i remember hearing something like that. They wanted Ironman but had issues with that so they just went with Omega Red.
Lazy, but we didn't know how crazy the vs games were going to become at the time. We were just pumped to have Captain America fight Ryu
This game has the best music in the series, bar none.
I love chun li , spiderman , ken and cyclops theme in this game . :)
But I do think some themes were better in other games ( for me for hulks theme it's between marvel vs capcom 1 or marvel superheroes )
@@spiderhulk26 Hulk's MvC1 theme is definitely his best, no contest!
And announcer by 10,000 miles.
Umvc3 has the best. Imo
I love to load this game on MAME, and use cheats to play as Norimaro. He's so fun to play as.
Also supposedly Iron-Man and Dr. Doom were supposed to be in the game but Sega had the game rights to Iron-Man and The Fantastic Four, which might explain why Cyclops and Omega Red were added.
Thought the presentation on this game was better than all of the others in the VS series. Music, colors, background, and the announcer were awesome. The only Capcom fighter back then with this level of presentational polish was SF3 and CVS1
Have you noticed: both the Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter intro & the Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike intro actually showed who the final bosses were:
MARVEL SUPER HEROES VS STREET FIGHTER: showed Apocalypse & Cyber Akuma
STREET FIGHTER 3 3RD STRIKE: showed Gill
The funny thing is that in 1997, because of how massively popular the X-Men were in the comics, and because of the cartoon, Omega Red is probably one of the most well know and liked characters on the Marvel side when that game came out. Back then is was bigger than Captain America and Hulk, and Blackheart and Shuma-Gorath were so unknown before their appearances in Capcom’s games that lots of comic fans didn’t even know who they were.
I remember having a GamePro magazine that had showed how to use the secret characters when I was a kid and I showed my uncle when we tried it out, we both was shocked. I was twds Shadow because of Charlie ending in XvsSF and he was with Mecha Zangief. He been a fan of the transformation ever since he did the super armoring through attacks and the grab still connected afterwards. 😂
Even though this game is 'lazy' in a lot of regards, it's still part of the main, core "vs" history. I really hope we get a collection.
So is Zangief/Mecha Zangief, Blackheart/Mephisto, Spiderman/Armored Spiderman and Sakura/Dark Sakura but hey, they have different properties!
Dark Sakura was Sakura that made sense.
There wasnt a rumor that Capcom tried to put both iron man and dr doom in this game and the plans feel through so they put cyclops and omega red instead? It happened again with tony stark on mvc1 but then they got creative with war machine...
I know Omega Red was pretty big in the X Men cartoon. Maybe that's why he was uncluded
He was pretty popular at the time. A lot of things Wolverine or X-Men in general were.
This is the only marvel vs capcom game I had as a kid. Since we were.... less fortunate, to put it lightly. I loved it!
I have a cabinet with this game and Wolverine is OP as hell. Super jump and spam medium punch and you can build bar so fast.
My favorite versus game, so many hour at the laundry mat.
I don't care if it's "lazy" it's my fave game in the VS series. I'll take this game over any other in the series. Except for MvC1
Same.
did people actually care that it didn't have new sprites?
because I don't remember anyone complaining about it when I used to hang out in several arcades almost every weekend back in the day with mvsf being one of the most played arcade cabinets.
that intro never gets old
i don't think it deserves that title. Hell a huge portion of mvc2 is just a giant asset dump from previous games and some of the cheapest ui and menu design in a fighting game.
While that's true for much if MvC2's roster and presentation they actually put in a lot of work to completely retool the gameplay mechanics in order to make the 3v3 system work
Back in the day I owned this on the Saturn. X-men vs Street Fighter also. Both arcade perfect or BETTER than arcade which is unheard of. This is favorite of the vs series. Raging Demon and other supers of that ilk are level 3s (LIKE THEY SHOULD ALWAYS BE) and assists and everything are just great. I found combos a lil easier than xmvsf. This is also the only game in the series to use different music for ALLOT of the characters. I think most of the roster has a unique theme especially the Street Fighter characters. All around in my opinion a great game. Plus Cyber-Akuma is Capcom giving in and saying SNK-style bosses are fun!
Can we appreciate just how awesome MVC music was until Infinite and it's generic movie orchestra themes are now. Same with Mortal Kombat unless Dan Forden is involved, he made some great tracks in MK11. That's cuz he's the OG of MK music.
Infinite has it's good themes, though.
I have the fondest memories with MVC 1. I grew up with it for the PlayStation, and I really played it a lot, by myself :( I loved everything, the cool characters, the music, the arcade endings, the huge art gallery, and everything else about the presentation.
MSH vs SF was the first MvC game i played, but the time when i tried the rest of the series i never played this one again lol. The only thing i really like about this game is the announcer
The music great too.
I didn't know MSHvSF said "Amazing Fantasy", that is so cool.
The last 10 seconds "time's running out! Hurry up!" theme and Omega Red's theme are my favs.
May be lazy, but it’s one of my favorites
Love the 2 button loops in this game 😂😂😂
This game tends to be overlooked, when it comes to the Marvel vs Capcom series. Personally, I really enjoy this game. The music and announcer are awesome!
I'm glad I still have my PS1 copy of this game around. I'd totally love for this game to be re-released on modern consoles, someday.
It was great to see Ryu with Ken do a double Shinku Hadoukeeennnnn!!!!!
Its not lazy. Its awesome. Even kof used the same sprites for a long time. I love all capcom marvel games.
Just because it's lazy doesn't mean it's bad.
The background in this game were so cool
Still the best intro of all time
I love the announcer.
SHINKU-HADOU-KEEEEEEEEENNNNN
this game is quite literally memorable by the announcer and a few more music tracks.
Maximilian has great editing techniques for his videos , and that kind of mic looks like some studio mic I've never had or seen
I didn't care about reused sprites in this game. Lol I just played the hell out of it.
This shit changed the game dudes. Used to play this with my cousin for hours.
hold on at 6:33 ryu's super OTGs. they never let him have that in the same way. in mvc3 he could OTG with super in the air
Armored Spiderman was mad fun man, i miss him in every other Vs series games, this is my favorite Vs game, i played this a lot on PSX.
Hey, max! Do you have any tips for training to get better at fighting games?
I hope max organize a tournament for the old but gold marvel games at least 1 time
My local pizza joint still has this game up since it was released some really awesome memories I remember keeping tabs on a certain player cause he was the only one that knew how to unlock shadow folks outside playing with pogs and reading Marvel/DC comics the good ole days (old man voice).
I had a vs series compilation for ps2 don't know if it was even legal
Yeah this was the Super Street Fighter II (vanilla) of the Vs. series ... thankfully it only happened once
The thumping of the controller is some ASMR shit, no joke
That Mega Man mascot in the background makes me uncomfortable
I have the Japanese version with that special character. On my modded Vita. And for some reason I like this vs,better than marvel vs capcom 1🤷🏿♂️.
They need to make Omega Red a villain in MCU
In my opinion, the best game of marvel in the 90's, is a fast and dinamic game, the rooster is poor but the game is magic
For the longest I always had this and xvssf mixed up, this is a basically what an update would be today. They are the same game
I thought this was the mvc2 video from that title
Been replaying this one for a few days, still great.
I hope there are more month of marvel videos on the way
Ragging on this when it literally does the same asset reusing process as mvci which you hype (and I love them both) is just a bit much.. this and CvS1 was the hypest announcer capcom ever made. I wish mvci gem system was done the old style, and for this game I would just improve some of the character picks even though blackheart is my fave ♡ then they ripped him apart and made dormammu.. sigh
I like the slightly armored spiderman though.i hope that the concept will be picked up in a future vs game and then like make it symbiote suit spiderman... :(
Why is Pam in the picture lol🤣
8:17 whats the name of the background theme song ?
Just look for theme of hidden character from MSHvSF.
Actually, fuck the sprites. Can we talk about how hard the drummers went for the soundtrack?! Each song they were putting their souls in the sticks!
1:23 Can't the Japanese rom be used? It has one more character the other regions lack: Norimaro. I main him in MSHvSF.
Sandman in the next MVC? I think he would fit a fighting game really well. A guy can dream.
My FAVORITE things about this game is the announcer yelling out the name of the super combo if you finish the enemy with it. I wish that had continued into the following games.
Wolverine's theme in this game is soo good
All the budget went into the BGM I guess.
SNK used the same sprites from KOF '94 to KOF 2003, but I don't see you complaining about that.
change kof 94 with kof96
I can't call this roster weak, but odd.
Laziest? No, Max. That would be Fighting Jam.
No roster in the series is worse than Marvel vs Capcom Infinite's roster, at least this game has Wolverine, Cyclops, Akuma and Ken, not to mention, zany picks like Shuma-Gorath, Dhalsim, Omega Red, Sakura, Blackheart and Dan, Marvel Infinite's roster is anemic as FWUACK.
Thumbnail cracked me up
I really like this game . I was introduced to Dan and Ken through this game . I really like most of the themes in this game characters ( my favorite is probably between chun li and spiderman theme ) . But I do think some of themes were better in the other marvel vs games the characters appeared in ( i never played mvc 2 , 3 and infinite so I don't know there themes there )
Imagine you are told you have 17 character slots, and you choose 5 shotos
Omega red was popular in the comics when the game came out
So... US Agent is an Echo Fighter
Cyber Akuma is a fucking nightmare!
I wonder what the tiers would look like if you removed every known infinite and semi-infinite from the game
The thumbnail killed me ☠️☠️☠️
If I remember correctly, Us agent is pratically the same as captain america except the team super, one have stars and stripe and the other have charging star. You can see at 7:37 in your video
