- Removing C3 Corvette windshield wiper blades appears impossible to the new owner. Is there a secret to doing so?
Well, sort of.
And I have to admit that for years I've been doing this basic maintenance job wrong! And I am sure most other Vette owners are making the same mistake.
An Instagram follower recently messaged me asking me how to remove the wipers from his C3. I assume he was trying to replace the blades.
Anyway, he was thrown off by the star-looking washer, which upon close inspection is not a washer at all.
I shared my customary "Use a flathead screwdriver to pry them apart until the blade comes off the arm." I even sent him a short video demonstrating the (incorrect) procedure.
But after careful inspection of the wiper blade, I realized there was a far easier, more effective, and safer method to get the job done, and I share the "secret" in this video.
If you have any other "secrets" that apply to the C3 Corvette, please share them in the comments.
Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

For others to learn from my mistakes.......In my impatience, I went to my local auto parts store and tried several 16" wipers that their parts departments said would fit, and finally gave up and bought the OEM style from a vintage Corvette supplier. They have to be very "low profile" to not interfere with the door.
Yes. I ordered Trico wiper blades from Amazon for my 81 Corvette and they operate perfectly. Most other off-the-shelf blades will hit the hood’s edge which can damage the paint and or fiberglass. GM used Trico wiper arms and blades on many of their vehicles. 😊👍🏻

I had replaced the blades on my "85 C4 with method 2 but it was a while ago and my memory isn't that good these days. Thanks for reminding me.
Took a long time to find your video. They always show the modern ones.
I always forget this trick, or it doesn't work so I get frustrated. Thanks for the perfect camera angle. (86 Firebird)
These were ubiquitous in my day, now they are "old school". sigh
Thank you for watching, John! 😊👍🏻
THANK YOU! nice that you passed that along!!!

Thanks for showing me something I didn't know!
Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻
I fought with mine until a guy on the NCRS forums taught me the same method of removing the blades by pushing down the spring…it was so simple, well, you know how I felt afterwards…
Yes, I know EXACTLY how you felt. lol 😆
I thought there had to be a better way than jamming a screwdriver between the blade and arm and was very happy I discovered how the spring retracted once pushed. It definitely was an "AHA!" moment.
Thank you for watching! 🙂👍
Can't stress the importance of checking the height profile before you shut the hood. Especially on the passenger side.
Thank you! I've never changed the wipers on our 1978 Corvette!👍
Glad to hear the video was helpful. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻
Just what i needed! Thank you!

Great tip... I'm getting ready to replace my 71's wiper blades for the first time and this will really help. I've never used the wiper motor since I purchased my Vette 18 months ago, but I guess I have no choice to get to the blades. Thye are hidden under the vacuum operated door. Bad design by those Chevy engineers.
Old wiper blades can do a lot of damage if you need to use them and they fall apart. We’ve all seen windshields scratched to the point of being a hazard, and they look horrible.
The vacuum system was problematic since day one, I guess. Glad to hear you found the video helpful. 😊👍🏻
@@76vette your correct about it scratching the windshield...that's why I never tested the wipers when I was purchasing the car. I'll wrap some socks round the wiper arms to prevent scratching and spray the windshield with silicone.
Very nice tip!
Glad to hear you found it helpful. Thank you for watching! 🙂👍
Things are easy when you know what to do ! Thanks. I had to search for a method to stop the wipers in mid-stroke. You may want to add how to do that for newbies. Thanks.
Lol 😆 I may shoot a short video about how to do that one of these days. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻
Great tip! Thanks

What happens if I get a 15 inch wiper? So I don’t hit the roof
Where did you purchase your new wiper blades from?
Thanks!!
I bought them at AutoZone. Had to bring the original blades to ensure they were the same height. Otherwise they will hit the hood as they come up. 😊👍🏻
Thank you very much!! I’m having the same height problem…
@@ramautoservice8573 You’re welcome. I checked Amazon and I think these may also work. amzn.to/42ceb9x They are the right length (16”). 😊👍🏻
