  • September 13, 2018, marks Conan O'Brien's 25th year on late night television. Here's a two-part Dave/Conan compilation to commemorate the milestone.
    Part 1 documents Dave's and Conan's interactions on each other's shows from 1994 to 1999, followed by Dave's reactions when Conan was awarded The Tonight Show in 2004 and then finally took over the show in 2009.
    NOTE: Part 1 is a recut; the bird network blocked part of the 2/28/84 video, so that's been deleted here. (Why they blocked part but not all, and why they left alone a poorer-quality version uploaded elsewhere last December escapes me, but thus is the arbitrary corporate logic.)
    Update: The blocked segment is now available here: • David Letterman On "La...
    In the absence of further appearances, Part 2 is devoted mostly to Dave's gags and running commentary on the fiasco that was The Tonight Show in January 2010. The collection ends with Conan's last Late Show guest appearance in 2012.
    Part 1
    Beginning where we left off before Conan's Late Night debuted:
    1. June 25, 1993. On the final Late Night with David Letterman, Dave wishes Conan well and hopes to someday be invited onto his upcoming show.*
    2. February 28, 1994. Dave guests on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
    BLOCKED BY the bird network: available in poor quality here: tinyurl.com/ya...
    3. July 29, 1994. Conan guests on Late Show, 1.
    4. March 21, 1995. Dave's pre-Oscar nightmare.
    5. May 2, 1995. Late Show's stand-by audience is sent to LNwCO. (Inclusion of the giant rat at the beginning is paid off at the end.)
    6. December 19, 1995. A Day in Dorothy's Life (excerpt).
    7. January 26, 1996. Conan guests on Late Show, 2.
    8. February 23, 1996. Cold Open on LNwCO.**
    9. February 6, 1996. Joan Collins guests on Late Show (excerpt).
    10. March 19, 1996. Dave makes a surprise appearance on LNwCO to talk to Joan Collins.***
    11. March 27, 1996. Dave goes to LNwCO and gives Conan a joke.
    12. May 24, 1996. Dave and Conan in Late Show's cue cards room.
    13. June 24, 1996. Conan guests on Late Show, 3.
    14. January 13, 1999. Conan guests on Late Show, 4.
    15. October 15, 2003. Dave announces the birth of Conan's and his wife's baby, Neve.
    16. September 27, 2004. Dave on Conan hosting The Tonight Show -- in five years.
    17. June 1, 2009. Dave on Conan as the new Tonight Show host.
    Thanks to @therealtriggi on Twitter for the idea.

    The first version of Part 1 included Dave’s 1994 guest appearance on Conan. NBC blocked it, so I edited it out for this Recut version.
    The Conan folks must have done something, because that appearance is no longer blocked. They even uploaded most of it themselves.

    I can give you some insight into the Dave's walk-on with Joan Collins...
    I was an intern on Conan when this happened. Dave was there to film a bit with Conan after "Late Night" finished taping (it was actually the clip right after that one). I was down in the 6A hallway, literally right next to Dave. I was shaking, but controlling myself, because I had idolized Letterman since high school. So Dave is standing there and sees Joan Collins on the video monitor. Suddenly, Dave says, "Oh, I need to talk to her" and just bolts right into the studio! It was COMPLETELY unplanned - NOBODY knew he was going to do that!
    And I assure you that, back in the office, Conan was COMPLETELY delighted and thrilled. He was just in awe of Dave and just thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Conan also launched into a HILLARIOUS riff on what would happen if he (Conan) did an impromptu walk-on with Dave. I can't do it justice, but it ended with Conan shattering Dave's hip.
    I may not work in TV anymore, but this was truly one of the highlights of my life. I felt like I witnessed television history.

      That was because Conan's show was failing. So... Letterman, who rarely did anyone else's show around this time (I mean, Leno wasn't going to have him on any time soon),came up with the idea for this appearance. At the time, Conan's show was failing; the ratings were plummeting and NBC was considering either replacing Conan for someone else, or just canceling the show all together. Letterman's appearance gave the show a massive boost and from that point forward, Conan's ratings climbed up out of the cellar and became the hit show we all know and remember today. On many occasions, Conan has expressed his complete gratitude to Letterman for having done that for him, and he tells people to this day that, had that not happened, he'd just be a distant memory and his name would have become a punchline among failed talk show hosts.

    There’s a timeline where Dave was supposed to host the Tonight show and then take Conan under his wing before passing the mantle to him. I think being deprived of that, by being mutually screwed over by Leno, is what has given them this special bond over the years and it’s why Letterman has always stuck up for Conan. He knew Conan had potential before anyone else and it has been amazing to see their cross network camaraderie.

      Leno is actually a very well established and respected comedian, even by other comedians. He's had such a successful life, and continues to be successful in everything he does. Leno has a successful car show and still does stand up every weekend.
      Dave is shoveling pig crap and Conan is clutching at a fading career. Even his podcast title is pitiful. "Conan O'Brien needs a friend". Cringe...

      @@dangerous8333 ok maybe Leno doesn't give a crap but all 3 of these guys are respected by other comedians. All of these guys are successful, that isn't the point.
      In the context of late night hosts, Leno clearly lost. Letterman continued his show then got his Netflix deal and Conan is shutting down his show on TBS to go to HBO in 2021. Both working in their "hosting" capabilities and Leno has a car show and does stand up. Longevity seems to be the marker in the Late Night Wars and Leno didn't last as long as his colleagues.
      IMO, Leno did care. He declined going on Letterman or Conan. Now, while that's his choice and maybe he doesn't care, it came across as a comedian not being able to take a joke.

    A few days ago, I just found another clip of Dave's cameo appearance on LNwCO's 3rd anniversary episode in 1996. Dave congratulated Conan and then said to him "In 9 years, you guys can switch networks and start making some real money!". And in fact, it took Conan 14 years from 1996 to finally switch networks and start making some real money.

    David Letterman has been on so long. 33 years of great memories. I am glad we can go back and watch him and Conan. Conan is a little harder to find because he was on NBC for so long. Sad that He, Max and his announcer Joel were not as close as they acted on the Show. At least not Joel. They left him in New York and didn't invite him with them. I am sure it was NBC not Conan but it was still sad. If you go on CZcams here and search Conan O'BRIEN photos you will find all kinds. Like Conan barbeque photos. Or Conan Christmas party photos. These were hilarious bits with Conan and Max and Joel. When Conan went to The Tonight Show the trio were split up. Max was having heart problems at the time so he didn't go with Conan to the Tonight Show. And Joel was not invited by NBC. It was heart breaking and I think it hurt the Show. Because the best of Conan was the Trio doing bits and their relationship with each other. Since then it has never been the same. Conan is good on his other shows but it will never be what it was on Late night with Conan O'BRIEN. They brought back Andy but it just wasn't the same. And it is sad Conan could not use his NBC bits that made him successful. If they mated for example. But he has one if they molded which is similar.

    Conan is and always will be my personal favorite. I have been lucky enough to have eun into both Andy and Conan here in LA. Andy I met in front of Surf Liquor in Santa Monica - Conan I met a block or so from my mother's place, in Culver City. Both of them were super funny and took their time to chat with me for a few minutes. Conan even took a photo with me. He handed my phone to his wife and she was more than happy to help.

    Dave is a complicated guy. But guesting on Conan's show in 1994, and having Conan on his own show that same year was just pure class and decency on Dave's part. you can translate what i'm gonna write, my english is not quite good tbh:
    una profesora en la escuela una vez me dijo: ''el primero en terminar una carrera, no siempre es el mejor''.... y estas dos leyendas son el mejor ejemplo de esa frase ya que si bien ambos no llegaron al show que siempre habian querido y tampoco eran los primeros en cuanto a ratings, mucha gente los considera como parte de los mejores comediantes y anfitriones de la historia, además de ser inspiraciones para la respectiva siguiente generación de comediante....
    es genial ver la relación que tienen y ver como bromeaban juntos y generaban situaciones bastante divertidas., además de como eran parte en gran medida del show del otro.
    creo que algo que me encantaría saber es que sentira dave, despues de tantos años, al ver que su protegido llegó lejos en su carrera en relación a como lo conoció

    NBC made a DVD out of the Late Night 10th Anniversary special. The "was it a theme writing contest" clip is in a montage of moments on that DVD so that's why 90% of the interview is fine but that one part gets copyright struck. I ran into the same issue. I'd bet that if the whole interview was uploaded with just that moment taken out, it'd be left alone but it's probably not worth the risk. Also, I'd bet that the reason the other video doesn't get struck is that the video quality is so bad, the algorithm doesn't see it as identical video. Thank you so much for these clips. I wanted to see these interviews so badly that I remember reading transcripts of these interviews online back before internet video existed.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  Před 6 lety

      Possibly, but NBCU blocked all 11 minutes of the second half of the interview. Seems if they objected to just a tiny snippet, their block would have comprised just that moment.
      Who knows.
      I'm working on something now... :)

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  Před 6 lety +1

      Also, the block stated that NBCU found the offending video "manually," suggesting that it wasn't an algorithm but instead someone physically watching it. Unless I'm reading this wrong.

      Don Giller The separate Interview was struck as well. Shame on NBC for trying to erase Conan from their company.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  Před 6 lety

      Yes, I'm well aware of what they did. I can contest their decision, but that risks a copyright strike should they reaffirm their decision, and it's not worth it.
      Also, the "theme writing contest" line was in the first half of the interview. It's the second half that NBCU blocked. I asked why but got no response.
