Meet the melody maestro, Smt. Shalan Upendra Sarpotdar, a musical luminary whose journey through the harmonious realms began in the cradle of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, on a melodious March day in 1948. Born into a family that resonated with the sweet strains of music, her destiny was entwined with the melodies of life from the very start.
Immersed in the rich tapestry of classical vocal music, she found her first muse in the tutelage of the venerable Late. Shri. B.L.Ranade, a stalwart whose musical lineage traced back to the hallowed names of Pt. Gajananbua Joshi and Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan. From 1956 to 1970, Ratnagiri echoed with her melodic explorations under his guidance, laying the foundation for a lifetime of musical prowess.
In 1971, she embarked on a new melodic chapter as she exchanged vows with Late. Shri. Upendra Keshavrao Sarpotdar, settling in the vibrant city of Vadodara, Gujarat. Here, she found herself under the tutelage of the talented guru, Late. Shri. R.D. Potdar, a torchbearer of the Kirana Gharana, whose teachings enriched her melodic journey until 1990.
Even in the wake of Shri. R.D. Potdar's demise, her musical odyssey continued, guided by the skilled hands of Late. Shri. Vasant Ranade, a virtuoso of the violin and a revered mentor. Their harmonious alliance spanned 5-6 years, enriching her musical palette with new hues and melodies.
Throughout her journey, she found unwavering support in her husband, Late. Shri. Upendra Sarpotdar, whose rhythmic accompaniments on the tabla provided the perfect counterpoint to her melodic endeavors. Trained at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, he honed his tabla skills under the tutelage of Late. Shri. Sudhirkumar Saxena, ensuring that their musical bond resonated with seamless synchrony.
Today, Smt. Shalan Sarpotdar stands as a beacon of inspiration, nurturing the musical aspirations of countless students who tread the melodic path. Her accolades speak volumes of her mastery - from securing the coveted 1st position in the Art Circle, Belgaum competition of 1964, to achieving the milestone of Visharad in 1966. The echoes of her melodic triumphs reverberate through the corridors of time, a testament to her unwavering dedication and passion for the musical arts.
