- Michael J. Fox was celebrated with a standing ovation at the BAFTA Awards in London on Sunday while presenting the evening's ultimate prize for Best Film.
Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, was aided onto the stage by an attendant who pushed him in a wheelchair.
The audience promptly stood up, and Fox followed suit, stepping out of the wheelchair and grasping the lectern for support as he announced the nominees.
Fox received his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease at 29-years-old in 1991 and publicly disclosed it in 1998.
He is best known for his roles in several iconic films, including: Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990), Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success and Doc Hollywood.
This man has fought this disease for a very long time. Strong man.
So have millions of others. But their lives aren't as important as his.

@@Carl-bg7er My brother has Parkinsons and was recently put on home hospice care. His doctors have said he likely won't see next year. My brother is only 53 years old.
Michael J Fox has my eternal admiration. For nearly 12 years he has been the very public face of a terrible disease. He has let the public see his disease progress. He hasn't done it for admiration or glory. Fox could have taken his money and disappeared from public view. He didn't.
Prior to his announcement Parkinsons was thought of in the public mind as an 'old persons disease'. He's changed that and he has brought awareness to millions of people.
His life isn't any more important than anyone else's. His fame means he had opportunities to show what this disease does to a person. Something my brother certainly couldn't have done. MJF didn't make the disease about him. He doesn't claim to be a martyr. He took the disease as an opportunity to educate and try to help others.
It's a shame that you can't see he's fighting for those millions and the millions more that will be struck with this disease in the years to come.

I can't stop crying..Michael is an inspiration! My husband has had Parkinson's for 17 years. To Michael's wife : you are amazing and dearly loved by all as well. The world needs you both ❤❤
My sister turned 70 in January and was just diagnosed with Parkinsons. I so appreciate what Michael has done to raise awareness of the disease and support for a cure. He and his family are all heroes.

Met Michael J Fox in the early 2000s at the Parkinson's Unity Walk in Central Park along with my father, who was in a wheelchair because of Parkinson's. Michael was so sweet and kind to us all, but he hugged my father and that meant so much to us. He was in his early 30s, my dad was also diagnosed in his 30s. And my dad lived over 40 years with Parkinson's dying 3.5 year's ago at 75. It's hard to see your father deteriorate slowly through the years. But to have such kindness towards him, thank you Michael. God bless you and your family.

Bless him! Until you have personally lived the life with someone who has Parkinson’s you can’t imagine the struggles and heartbreak that comes with this horrible disease. Nothing can prepare you for the paths that it will take you down and the trials and tribulations that you will confront. Michael J Fox is a warrior as is my husband who is in his 15th year of the fight. It is amazing that it was stated that his foundation has raised 2 Billion dollars to fight Patkinson's!

I’m filled with joy and hope you can still surprise us all. I’ve been fighting for 4+ years after a single vehicular accident that broke my Spine T6-T9, my tibia and my face all requiring hard ware from suffering a seizure. I also sustained multiple other serious injuries. I can barely walk now after relearning how but it bought me all that time. Everyday is a fight with many small battles which I’m sure is no different with you Michael but if we can inspire, it shines light through the darkness and that’s special.
Every time I see Michael J. Fox I must cry. This man is so amazing and a wonderful actor with a horrible disease :( I wish sometime the humanity can heal parkinson...

Just seeing him step up from the wheelchair .... made me cry, a lot. He has been through so much, has been such an inspiration to many. He is truly a legend in every sense of the word.
The sad thing in all this is that he has incredibly amassed over 2 billion dollars for Parkinson's research, and all they have to show for it is earlier diagnosis. Now people will know in advance if they are going to get it. But I don't think I'd want to know in advance. If I'm going to get Parkinson's in 10 years and there is nothing anyone can do about it, I don't want to know. Every time I would shake or shiver, I'd think it's Parkinson's starting. This is no fault of Michael's, but I'm just disappointed that more advancement has not been acheived, given the incredible amount of work and success Michael had in raising money.
He doesn't give up even when there is little hope for himself. That's what made him so admirable.

My Dad only made it 3 years but he was in his 70s. I'm still angry about his death because he suffered really bad and my Mom was a Saint through it all. She took care of him till his very last day. Nobody should have this disease, it's horrible.

LOVE Michael J Fox and all he has done for Parkinson’s disease! My dad had it too and passed away 4 1/2 years ago. When I was going through his things, I found some information from the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease and it made me cry cause I grew up watching him on Family Ties and Back to the Future. He and his wife are definitely special people. 💜
I was a teenager when he went public about his diagnosis. I've seen what he's done for the disease, research wise and I just have so much respect for him. Just seems like a genuinely good person.
