Why not let it be a choice for the fans of Ultramagnus, I mean not everyone can afford to pay the price of the masterpiece. I would really love to get my hands on him for my collection.
I like this rendition while being a little disappointed with it only having two modes. As you said, it would be a little more understandable to get either a four mode Commander or two mode Leader, but I still like it and plan to pick it up whenever I get the chance (hopefully pre-order).
I would say the reason it's priced at Commander Class is due to not only the engineering involved but the increased number for parts/material that need to be made (such as creating the die for the molds) in order to get the figure to do what they want it to do. The complexity of it, especially if it does borrow from MP-22 and having better articulation (note the back of SS86 Magnus shows that he will have over 90 degress of knee bend where MP22 can't). There's also that they included the ability to be pulled apart like he was in the movie. Personally I'm fine with it and I have any design complaint is I think the eyes are a little too wide open. Though it does make you wonder what they'll do next year as it's been speculated that with the 40th Anniversary of the franchise that the next SS Commander Class will be G1 Optimus Prime.
It's definitely more than Leader, but it does seem a bit lacking for commander. They could really use a price point between Leader and Commander for those Leaders that need a bit more budget to do them right. I would need to see an in hand review to see if they put enough quality in to make it worth the full commander price.
For some reason people keep expecting to get Jetfire size at the commander price point. There is not a single bot other than Jetfire that is of that size, almost titan sized. We are probably done with most of the commander class sized bots from g1 other than the torso parts for the combiners, and they are all going to be small like Motormaster and we need to just suck it up and accept it.
He has to be a 2-mode version since that's what the 1986 movie was. Everything in Studio Series line is trying to be accurate to the movie as they can get it, not the toy. So if the toy and movie differ the Studio Series will use the lineart for the movie as reference. What they CAN do is a smaller version of this toy as 4 mode under the legacy line. (leader class size) They could modify the SS toy so it can do all 4 modes and maybe change a few things here and there. Kind of like how Studio Series 86 Starscream was merely an upsized TF Classics Starscream (which was a deluxe class figure) and some minor modifications on it. But in this case, instead of up-sizing the Commander SS Ultra Magnus they down-size him. (perhaps even release a better version of it later in new packaging where he has bigger gun or something.) The small version could be modified to look like G1 alternate uiniverse edition. (where the character often walked around without the armor on because its like a powered up version of himself that uses too much energy so you only see it for big fights. Otherwise he stays naked)
Im glad we have proper 2 mode magnus, since the leader one isnt fully g1 more idw. Besides i never liked magnus as 4 mode since in the toon and movie he didnt have a base bot mode. but i will most definitely wait for sale then ill get it
@@Transformoholic idk most of the commander class so far in my area no matter how sought after or valuable is never sold out quickly. Because most people in my area aint dumb enough to pay full retail price for commander class . they usually sold out once they start going for leader prices than alot of people starts buying
I'm thrilled that its a 2 mode UM. I think the little white optimus that wears armor is really lame. It never happened in the cartoon, only in the toy. Studio 86 is about the movie, it should definitely have only been a 2 mode for SS86.
We tell the company what we want with our wallets. That's the only way they learn, BUT this is not the case here. This is a totally acceptable price for a 95% screen accurate robot mode. Yes the design is flawed, and I hated the OG toy when it came out back in the day, just an Optimus Prime repaint with a flat ugly body that was awful to the touch, but this is truly awesome. I have passed on certain figures in the recent past because the price doesn't match the effort (legacy beachcomber) but the effort is there for this one.
Like! Completely agree with you XTU on the class size and price point for Magnus. Yup, indeed disappointed that we didn't get the 4 modes for a Commander Class size. So tired of hearing the counterpart: the robot cab didn't debut in the cartoon. Well yeah, so was Commander Class Rodimus, his trailer didn't open up revealing giant canon and platform. Or the stick it w/ the Siege or KC comment, well had one of those bots featured a fully G1 in both mode, I couldn't careless what SS 86 turn out to be. With that being said, there is no question that SS 86 looks magnificent, almost better than MP22. Thanks goodness they kept the glass window chest, lol. As a huge Ultra Magnus fan, SS 86 will indeed be in my collection especially since this is the 1st true cartoon accurate in the main line after 37 years, not counting MP22 or 2007 Titanium. My 2 nitpicky w/ SS 86 is the clear plastic at the rear of the head, not a fan of lighting pipe. And the white plastic w/spring in front of the chest just for the sake of having an automatically chest door opening.
yeah, i'm a two mode ultra magnus fan, i absolutely hate that concept of magnus being a white optimus prime, to me it kinda kills the character because at the end ultra magnus was just the armor, that and to me there should always be only one optimus prime after all, the original. I prefer when magnus only has only one robot mode made from the cab and the trailer just because his body is huge like in the g1 cartoon and this figure is basically that, so yeah, i'm quite happy, i've been waiting for a real ultra magnus for quite a long time since i couldn´t get the one from combiner wars haha
Ultra Magnus is just Optimus Prime if he was a Base Defender. If Optimus didn't care much about speed in close combat fights he would probably look like Magnus but he can strike, dodge, and evade fire as a skinny, more-lean, "boxer's physique". In many fight scenes Prime wrestles with Megatron and moves with agility. The bulky armor would restrict his movement a lot. So I am thankful they made UM a chunky tank body permanently and Prime a Striker's body. Ultra Magnus can fit more car robots on his back in truck mode, so he is like a more defence-based character while Optimus is more offense-based. (his trailer looks to be a portable repair bay for when he is far away from the base for pro-longed period of time. While UM is stuck in the base as elite guard with no freedom to run around as much so likely needs the armor for when the base is raided) Base defense and security = bodyguards to soak up tons of damage. But attackers need to move quickly from target to target with little delay, so Optimus being slimmer, quicker and hard to hit is important. (high athleticism/speed stat = more kills per second)
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least slightly disappointed about Magnus not being 4-mode, but if it means he gets a great vehicle and armored robot mode, it's not a dealbreaker or anything (and I'm sure Hasbro could always just release a redeco of Earthrise Optimus if people really want Magnus' core robot mode that much) As for the Leader vs Commander debate, eh, I feel like Magnus is in a weird place where he'd have to be too compromised to fit the Leader price point Earthrise Optimus was Leader class, and while Optimus himself was fantastic, his trailer was kind of undersized and barebones Compare that to Commander Kingdom Rodimus, who was also a great figure unto himself, but had a much more substantial trailer, extra weapons and blast effects, etc. Now whether you think Rodimus should be Commander class is a different discussion altogether, but comparing him with what we're seeing with Ultra Magnus, it does feel like they should be in the same price range imo
I agree with you this should not be a commander class figure its so hollow at least throw in more cooler blast effects and not these ugly recycled ones
"Everything you see here is animation accurate" Except for the springloaded clear plastic why is there springloaded clear plastic why are we still doing springloaded stuff in 2023 why are we still doing clear plastic in 2023 it was opague in the movie it was opague in the show it was always opague ultra magnus's chest was always opague why is it clear on tje toy and why is it springloaded.
I have nothing against springloaded functions done right, but there are things that dont have any business being springloaded on a collector-oriented product, and a matrix cavity is one of them. Especially when Hasbro insists that it be on clear plastic that represent something that was always opague in the source material.

It absolutely is your choice in the end. No matter how much any of us talk about it, in the end it’s your wallet
As wierd as it may sound, my only complaint is the scale, him being bigger than Grimlock. I love the Siege/ER scale, between Optimus and Grimlock.
I still need Ultra Magnus to finish my 86 movie cast, this is the versions I was waiting for.

It’s commander class because his limbs come off .. they consider that the 4th mode
Not saying that makes it right . But that’s why.
I prefer the 2 mode UM myself. That's what he was in the G1 movie and show!

TakaraTomy should do a Missing Link version of Ultra Magnus now that Optimus Prime is out.
I love the 4 modes tho but If it will be only has 2 modes...This will still kick ass

I’m afraid this one won’t go on sale and be bought out as soon as it drops

I think form the back and the under thighs of robot more it’s gonna be a 2 form magnus
Vehicle mode is superior but robot mode is too wide and too big to scale, and I display in bot mode, so pass.
Better than Kingdom version
