yeah but he pushed too far with the "its important for you to be liked question" he should have kept it light like a regular conversation. After Michael told him the kid dog story, Toby should have shared a similar story with Michael to form a bond and get Michael to trust him more, then he could have lead the conversation into therapy. Toby probably would have done that if he had been focused, but he was probably fantasizing about Pam and thinking about strangling someone

I think the real reason Michael hated Toby was because he sensed Toby could see through him and make him face himself as he really is. We see it here in the therapy session. Michael could have had a challenging existential breakthrough that changes him at the core.

Toby's strategy is awesome here. Therapy is usually dealing with things that a patient cannot face themselves (either they are unaware or suppressing). The patient is unable to safely and confidently approach an issue. Thus the therapist's main goal becomes to form a safe external environment where light can be brought to said issue when the patient becomes almost unconsciously safe/willing to be vulnerable. Initially not with themself (who in the past was thought to be too weak), but with the other person who is seen as supportive and capable. It is that small step where someone is holding someone's hand, that can lead to someone's internal strength and bravery over time. And hopefully the patient will learn the most valuable aspect from that external therapist, that the response to vulberability is less painful and more beneficial when met with support and love. The therapist's hope is that the patient can internalize their supportive approach for themselves over time.

I’ve been a practicing psychologist for 13 years and Toby is actually a good therapist. But he should have known it would never work because of his relationship with Michael. The whole point of therapy is to de-escalate the issues and provide perspective, but above all, you’re there to listen to the patient. Toby knew how Michael felt, but he wanted to prove he could help him. As therapists we would never treat a friend, a coworker, or a family member, it’s unethical and morally erroneous. You’re there to help the patient and you need to have their best interests at heart. In the end it was Toby’s pride that got in the way of Michael’s treatment, and that should never happen.
