Making a Modern Kitchen Island - Full Build Video

- While I say this is a full build, I haven't made the drawers that will go in this island yet. That will be a project video on its own in the near future.
I've been planning this project for years and went through several different designs before settling on this one. My kitchen is fairly big (for such a small house) and it can easily accommodate an island this size.
The top is 60" long, 38" from front to back and a full 2" thick. Made from solid cherry, it will naturally darken with age and get even better looking.
The base cabinet is made mostly from 1/2" maple veneer plywood with some solid wood for the trim and corbels. The corbels (support brackets) are designed to match the doorway treatment I did going to my basement. They are decorative and functional, as they support the overhang. I'll be making a pair of fancy solid wood stools as a future project to go with this island.

Lindo trabalho, perfeito.
Sonho com o dia que me tornarei um profissional como você. 😅
PARABÉNS.
I see you make your own fixtures, fun in it's self. You a tool and die maker too?
I hope all of you find someone who loves you as much as John loves construction adhesive.
A love that slowly grew and grew after years and years of living in a place where wood glue only works 3 months in the year, beautiful
I use PL adhesive for everything. That stuff will tear concrete out before it lets go
🤣😂🥰
And if you do.... (wait for it).... stick with them... ba-dum-tssh
(let the groaning commence)
Don’t forget the brad nails.
I love John talking smack to John.. great build btw! Thanks for everything!
Those color tones and the whole aesthetic of the kitchen makes me want to tear mine out. Beautiful work John. When you are completely done, that house is going to be a magazine article.
Absolutely Beautiful John. I found through the years watching CZcams videos, you have a talent producing videos that keeps me interested till the end, and not everyone has that ability. Thank you.
Tapering those big chunks of maple by gluing spacers on the backs - brilliant! Great video, John!
I've never seen an Island cabinet built, piece by piece, in place like that, plus all the extra goodies with using plywood where hardwood is typically used. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Masterfully done. Love the corbels. I have never had much long term success with polyurethane wood glue, the construction glue is a no brainer, it works as long as it's needed to work. The stuff that looks and pours like honey is not stronger than wood after two or three years. It gets brittle, the joint fails. I've redone those failed joints with modern wood glue, they've gone close to ten years and are still strong. I sincerely hope they've reformulated the stuff to perform better. Thanks John, beautiful island.
Stunning lines and colouration.
Picked up on the corbel design immediately.
You've officially beat me to building a kitchen, and it looks great.
Thanks Jake!
The speed at which you got right into the video gave me a rush. I love that
Great build! Also the fact that that t-bone looks better than some humans have tried to make on a different surface in the kitchen says a lot 🤣😂
Insane, John is the most genius woodworker on youtube. It"s relaxing to see him working, Thanks John! : )
Everytime his thumb gets near or over the sawblade i feel it lol. so close man 😂
Nicked mine, cut was not too bad, but the blade took a quarter size of skin off. Bled for 3 days, took a month to heal, less feeling. Use a push stick now
Awesome build and design John 👌 Your videos are so unique and inspiring I watch them multiple times and always learn something.
Thank you, very much appreciated :)
great tip with the "tapering blocks". Have you considered doing a home tour video? It's been a while since you've done a video like that, kinda like the yearly updates you used to do on your home reno channel. And you've done a ton of work! Island looks amazing John.
Crazy beautiful work, John! It looks fantastic!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Wow! CZcams needs a heart button as I feel the thumbs up it not enough. Simply stunning
Great job John, really enjoyed the music with the video
Never would have built the carcass on site after you built the base it was an interesting watch the process unfold thanks
Super job John, the T bone is over the top, absolutely loved it all!
That's a beautiful piece John. You should be proud of it! !! !!!
So many little finessing tricks that never crossed my mind. I was stunned at how well boiled linseed came up on the top.
That t-bone steak inlay is awesome. And your precision with electric hand tools is always impressive. If I had tried that sideways electric planer move, there would have been so much snipe and tearout. 🤣
I was thinking the exact same thing when he ran the electric hand held planer across the end grain while it was horizontal.. No way could I have pulled that off. I would have destroyed it.
Cherry wood with oil finish is my absolute favourite for furniture. Looks gorgeous, sturdy and expensive
Wow, you make it look like it only took you a few days to get the whole thing done and it's amazing.
I’ve built kitchen cabinets and have watched many videos on the topic, but I have to say, there are a lot of unique methods and approaches here I’ve seen no where else. Amazing job John
A fantastic looking island cabinet. The choice of wood for the top could not be better. I love the grain on that wood. You have the most beautiful kitchen I have ever seen.
love how you've carried the design motif to the overhang bracing
Amazing, just in time for my coffee.
Mine too :)
The skill this guy has is to be admired. I want these plans
There's a fresh vibe to this.. the music and editing are really slick! and as per usual, the narrating and content are so good, interesting, and professionally delivered. This, I think, is one of your best videos ever, and I've been watching your content for what must be at least two years. Brilliant John!!
Beautiful John!! I love watching your common sense approach to making your cabinet and the top as well. It is an inspiration to see.
I love the “How Its Made” theme! Good work as always, John.
Tremendous result! That 23 minues flew by.
You are a baaaaaad maaaaan with that saucy v groove trick! I see you having fun over there! Hahaha :)
You're an inspiration John. This is a beautiful piece.
Nice kitchen table, but I confess I thought it would include a sink and a cooking hob, The electrics & plumbing would have been very interesting.
Everybody is so creative! The tbone is quite the look.
Great build John. Really good to see some woodworking again.
Nice work. I’m building a similar island with a slightly larger top out of thick maple.
One of the best videos I've seen. Outstanding work. Those brackets are awesome. Thanks John!
That island is a thing of beauty and a joy forever John. Great video thumbs up.
I don't think I can love anything as much as I love that fonky bass line!
That T-Bone Steak inlay is a real nice touch.
Over the top John! Turned out beautiful as usual and I really like the design elements you included. Great video production, very easy to follow and enjoyable to follow along with your build! Thanks for posting!!
Beautiful work John! Great to see another home project.
It's a work of art John.
Stunning, some great design features too, the Brackets and the T-Bone Steak fantastic. Cheers John.
You should engrave QR codes to a hidden part of all your home products that link to the respective CZcams video. That way, whoever eventually buys that house can see all the details, thought process, and hard work that went into everything.
Haha that's an awesome idea.
Yeah thats really clever. It'd be a real treat for the future owner
Beautiful job John. I made a very similar island several years ago and it's an absolute hit in our house. The only difference is that I put mine on casters so that we could move it for cleaning etc. But you do you!
Very interesting to see a cabinet just piece-built in place.
That's how I learnt to do it when I started as a cabinetmaker/finish carpenter mumble decades ago :^) Everything was stick built on site. So much easier options nowadays.
Modern look, old school methods :)
i would definitely make some secret draws in there lol. i love that stuff :)
You never fail to inspire me John, Love the build and your touch on detail!
Frickin' awesome
Outstanding!
Hey John! Great new video and editing style! So much more power and energy in it ❤❤❤
Very nice build! Can't wait for the drawers video!❤
Well done! The cherry does look gorgeous.
your work is amazing! what a nice kitchen island!
Stunningly beautiful. Magnificent craftsmanship.
Beautiful, great to get back to some cabinet making.
Beautiful.
What a perfect piece to finish off the kitchen. Music really got me on this episode 😅
Beautiful work John! Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖😎👍JP
Looks amazing, John!
Thanks Drew!
Absolutely beautiful work.
Really good to see the techniques you use. I make many 90 degrees birch ply corners using a tracksaw but you may have given me the justification to buy that table saw I’ve been avoiding!
Good to see you back in the kitchen, really nice
I would be proud to have this kitchen! Great job.
This ol' chap got skillz!
Beautiful work!
Absolutely beautiful.
You do such awesome projects. I so appreciate your sharing
Amazing build and fantastic video! Thanks!
Sweet Christmas that looks amazing. Incredible work. I always love to see how you do things. Thank you for making this.
Stunning as usual, John! Love the Art Deco-ish style support brackets! It's a shame they're mostly hidden but for those times when you're crawling around on the floor .... 🙂
Over the top john...best build yet...
Nicely done.
Another great video! Your island is stunning...I might just be saving those corbel designs for when we build next year. I really like them!
Thanks :)
Nice sound track on this one
Beautiful
Wow beautiful work!

Great tip on that stop cut on the chamfer, thanks.

Amazing build along with very interesting tools and techniques. I especially enjoyed your home made tools. The island is stunning!
Great looking project!
Beautiful work❤
Really Nice! Thankyou
Brilliant!
Very nice!
Beautiful. Attention to detail.
This is not that much woodworking, but instead glue and nail work !! 😊
Well, let's get right into it😅 Thanks for the vids brother
Great piece! Very nice work
Looks amazing great job
Nice work John.
Would love to see your take on building the interior of a camper-van.
Nice build mate, keep up the great work 👍
