This is wild & crazy & awesome ! Bill Haley & the Comets not only kicked off the rock n roll explosion in 1955 but they were also the best with great musicianship & showmanship they were the ultimate rock n roll in the 50's. The true definition of rock n roll. Bill Haley was just as cool & charismatic as Elvis. Bill Haley & the Comets are true founders of rock n roll. Crazy Man Crazy !
Rudy was my dads 1st cousin and my 2nd i am 53 so I really didn't know him but I love watching all these old videos , I wanted to play sax but my school said they were all taken so they gave me a French horn lol , I quit and took up guitar , my school sucked lol
Truly pioneers. Bill Haley and the Comets were great! To think of this performed on Ed Sullivan at that time is unbelievable. I'm sure they were frowned upon by most every household. Love it!
Great entertainment. People who appreciate this KNOW how much Fun music can be. Haley and the Comets had the ingredients for making music sound great. Let that sax man do his job. Just Great. Drummer was featured along with all the great guitar work. Bass Man a show man. All in All bring this Music back
On this day in 1957 {April 28th} Bill Haley and the Comets performed the instrumental "Rudy's Rock"* on the CBS-TV variety program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... Six months earlier on October 18th, 1956 it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart at position #79, three weeks later it peaked at #34 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 13 non-consecutive weeks... And on the same 'Sullivan' show Bill & the boys also performed "Forty Cups of Coffee", it reached #70 in early 1957... * "Rudy's Rock" featured the Comets' saxophone player, Rudy Pompilli...
You're off by about 500 miles, pal. Bill may have been born in Detroit, but he was raised in a quiet rural suburb of Philadelphia from the time he was 7. The farmers market where he first started performing live is still here. Rock & roll was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
Bill's contribution to Rock and Roll is grossly overlooked which in this writer's opinion is attributed to "IMAGE". Some of the best ROCK and ROLL music came from this Guy and his Band. No "Faking It" here.
Although Rudy Pompilli and Al Rex get the lion's share of the attention here, Ralph Jones' drum solo (which is performed almost identical to how it's done in the Rock Around the Clock movie) is quite remarkable. I've spoken to professional drummers who have tried to replicate it and they say it's very difficult.
Try to play the intro of "Birth of the Boogie" on the floor tom. Technically it is very simple, but to match the groove that Jones created is impossible.
While I would have to say that :"Pat-A-Cake, Live it Up, and "You Hit the Wrong Note Billy Goat" where not exactly good songs recorded by Haley's Comets.

Eso es apasionarse por la música y billi y su gran grupo sabían como tocar ese magnífico ritmo.
M64costa from Brazil.
Marvelous!
Agreed.
Most of them were excellent.
Crazy!!
I think the accordion is perfect for rock. Saxophone should come back to rock.

This is what you call showmanship. This goes on to continuous loop for me. WOW! To think the birthplace of rock n roll was just outside Detroit

they seem to have fun playing music. Something we don't see anymore.
Sure glad this video wasn't lost, thanks OC!
This was from their Ed Sullivan Show appearance of 28th April '57, after returning from their long UK tour.
Now that's Rock n Roll ! Long live Bill Haley & the Comets, Crazy Man Crazy !

Alex F Ralph is fantastic. He is the first comet drummer Haley trusted to play on the Decca recordings.
Alex F I personally think the drum solo is better here

So fast!
Ralph Jones was such a great drummer! Does anyone know what he did after he left the comets? Are there any records?
Very versatile band; they could incorporate jazz and swing right in with the rock. Is that a cello he was riding? LOL
What about that steel!
@margolou2010 is not a cello, it is a double bass
Historic performance ! Are they playing live ? I am in doubt. Performances at the Ed Sullivan show tended to be live.
Definitely live!
@@MrSkokiaan Thank you for the reply. Absolute Rock and Roll at its finest !
Don't knock the rock guys
Old drugs hit so hard
Where was Ed?.....that looks like Dick Clark?
