The Young Runaways: Old Town in Chicago in 1968

  • The 1968 film "The Young Runaways" was a forgettable cautionary tale of terrible things happening when seeking excitement in the big city. However, it does have a few brief scenes of Chicago's Old Town, some of the few available anywhere from that era. There are also some scenes of Wacker Drive. This clip trims the 105 minute movie down to 9 minutes.

My mother in law was the babe walking down the stairs in Old Town Chicago Scene at 5:30. We're going nuts over here. She used to model with Karen Black at the time and said she was pretty cool. Rad stuff.

What a delightful discovery! I always wonder when seeing these old films and photos of Chicago years ago if I might see a friend or relative or even myself. It's so neat you found your mother-in-law!

@@Misscollage better than looking at the human scat seen in films the last 30 years . this seems like a decent film so stop complaining.

Never heard of the movie before; it was truly awful. It was like a train wreck, I just couldn’t stop watching. In 1965-66 I thought Old Town was the coolest hippy place in the whole world.

I was born there on weiland st. The next block over in 1966. Grew up there. A 1 of a kind place.

It was I remember 1969-71. It was filled with college kids and cool shops, like Wicker park today. This film hardly shows a fe establishment's. The evenings and weekends is when it really came alive.

I understand, but I edited this movies down to include the only Old Town scenes … that’s what I wanted as well. The rest of the movie is interiors and outside scenes from somewhere else entirely, like LA area

Great movie I just watched the whole movie. My favorite was when the got those picture paintings and sat on the steps as they dried. Then the motorcycle picked up that chick at the end! It was epic!

Why not just post the entire movie? --The whole movie was posted by someone else on 3/14/22 but the picture quality is terrible and it's not in widescreen, like this is. This is widescreen and looks way better, but it's condensed to 9 min. Sure, it's a lousy movie, but so what? That's the fun of it. Post the whole movie anyway.

Columbus,OH also had a similar, _single_ structure like that. Essentially the lower half of one of those buildings.
Today's building architecture is devoid of such style.

Does anyone remember a head shop store in Old Town in the late 60s who was owned by a 'Richard' and sold posters and had someone telling fortunes (astology) sitting at a table by the entrance? Very close to Piper's Alley. I'm writing about the era. Thanks!

That perky blonde gal with her clean white gloves must not be one of the "runaways", looking like that. Must just be Dewey, the guy, who left his folks back home in the country someplace.
