The Best most beautiful song ever written. Leon wrote it and his version of singing it is my favorite. He has more great songs. RIP The Master of Space and Time.
Leon was a musical genius. The master of space and time!!
"This Masquerade.", "Delta Lady" "Tight Rope"
Yes! I was just about to say the same thing about The Masquerade.
Leon Russell was an American musician & songwriter who was involved with numerous bestselling records during his 60-year career. He recorded at least 31 albums & 430 songs. He collaborated with many notable artists such as Joe Cocker, The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones & so many more.
And almond those others more, JJ Cale👋
Ray Charles did an amazing cover of this. Russell was a true talent.
It's a joy to watch the two of you, and how much the music moves and touches you... much respect and love.
I have loved your reaction to this song. There may be hundreds of covers but there is always something special when the songwriter performs their own material .
Leon is a legend.
I first became aware of Russel when he was touring with Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Later I found out he was part of the famous Wrecking Crew. The stuio musicians that were solely responsible for the sound of popular music in the 50s 60s and 70s. And he helped George Harrison out with his Bengla Desh concert. For Cocker and Harrison he wasnt just a musician, he was the musical directer and arranager for Cocker. To me, he could have never done a single song on his own but would still deserve to be in the HOF, he's contributed that much to popular music for decades
I just love it too. He's the greatest. I really think so. So feeling. And the blend of techniques and influences to be so personal and universal at the same time. Master of Space and Time.
You two are my spirit double, love love love how y’all love Music, especially 70’s music, the music of my teenage years
A perfect song for you both ! ❤😊
One of America’s and world’s greatest musicians.
Leon was the epitome of the long haired country boy. He was from Oklahoma, and his musicianship was off the charts. You might also like his Stranger In A Strange Land and Home Sweet Oklahoma, both from his Shelter People LP. He was also part of the infamous Mad Dogs & Englishmen rock & roll tour with Joe Cocker back in 1970. You two should check out some videos clips from that tour sometime. It was a testament to the rock & roll excess of the times, and it was eventually turned into a documentary dvd. If you haven't heard Joe Cocker yet look for his With A Little Help From My Friends clip on YT from that dvd. Epic. Leon even wrote a song about the tour called The Ballad Of Mad Dogs And Englishmen, very wistful and bittersweet. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
I saw Leon Russell at RFK stadium in D.C. in 1974. My friends had to cancel and I was so disappointed. I wanted to go so badly. I got up the nerve and didn’t tell my parents that I was going to go alone. The stadium was huge and I was a little scared, but I found my way onto the field and pretty close to the stage. It was fantastic and he was amazing! I may have gone alone, but I still remember what a wonderful time I had watching and listening to Leon Russell with thousands of other fans.
Great memory to have and to share.
Love me some Leon Russell! The lady is making some Southern Biscuits. Leon made history.
LUVS ME SOME LEON!! :) His voice is UNMISTAKEABLE and SO UNIQUE!!! GLAD you reacted to this one! BEAUTIFUL!!! ENJOY!!!
Coming in the top 5 of my all time favorite Leon Russell compositions. So glad you got this particular version!
The Homewood Session was on Public Television. You can watch the hour long program in its entirety. It's a milestone in Public Television here, and rock and roll programming. Epic. The singers! The band! Furry Lewis! Emily making biscuits! Thank you for loving it like we all do.
What an amazing talent and career Leon had. His performance of “Jumping Jack Flash”and “Young Blood” at George Harrison’s 1971 Concert For Bangladesh is epic and worth a reaction.
I am a fellow Oklahoman, and I have always been a huge fan of Leon Russell. He was an incredible songwriter and performer. He did a heartbreaking version of this song on his last album that he released before he passed away from brain cancer. The album is called "On A Distant Shore" and contains more of his original songs that were covered by many artists such as "Masquerade". Another great song from Leon Russell is "Tightrope."
Not brain cancer. He had a heart attack.
Leon wrote this song, and it's been recorded by many artists. Leon is a musical Icon (Elton Johns Idol), and he wrote many beautiful songs 'THIS MASQUERADE, DELTA LADY,
LADY BLUE, HUMMINGBIRD. He's from Oklahoma in the U.S.
I love this song! Lady Blue is another great song of his ❤ Ray Charles does a great cover of this.
Lady Blue is great, and another favorite of mine is Back the Island, both from the Will O' The Wisp album.
I recently saw a reaction by BrittReacts of a live version of this by Willie Nelson, Ray Charles and Leon Russell, with Ray taking the lead. She didn't know who Leon Russell was, so had no idea that it was his song.
@@LonghopeBro-ju6jl I agree. I've got the album. Excellent.
He composed the magnificent "Lost inside of you" for Barbra Streisand for the movie "A star is born". ❤
I fell in love with Leon Russell in the early '70's and love him still. This performance is from Leon Russell & Friends - "Homewood Sessions" (1971). Other clips from that session are available on YT. "Delta Lady" is a knockout and "Big Boss Man" is a blast. You'd really enjoy both. I hope you explore more of his work - his career spanned decades. You might also want to check out Leon Russell and JJ Cale " Going Down".
“Tightrope “ and “Lady Blue” are two of his best works to me. “ A song for you” has been covered so many times that no one realizes it’s Leon’s song. Most don’t know who he is.
Leon Russell is a master songwriter, another song he wrote which has been covered often is Superstar. Karen Carpenter and Bette Midler are my favorites who covered it. You guys are so enjoyable to watch, thank you.
Oh, Dominika, I so enjoyed your reaction to this selection. Leon was one of a kind. I was privileged to see him live in concert back in the 70's, in Houston, with his then wife Mary. Such a heart-felt and talented soul. Thank you.
It’s such a beautiful song.
So long since I've heard this song and, as usual, your reaction does it justice.
A blast from the past.I still have the Leon Russell and the Shelter People lp.(1971, Vinyl). On the super egg label .
I'm so with you. This is real music!😎
Leon Russell, Carney, Shelter People, and Hank Wilson's Back are superb albums.
I've been a fan of Leon for a very long time.
He wrote this song for Rita Coolidge his girlfriend in the late 60’s who was the love his life but left him. One of the greatest love songs ever written.
That was a great way of expressing how this makes you
You would LOVE the song LADY BLUE by Leon Russell. Its beautiful ❤
He was the coolest. He came to town around '73 with his back up singers. One got into her solo so much that her wig flew off. We all laughed but i was embarrassed for her.
Actually he was a child prodigy and there's videos of him performing as early as 1963. Here's a great one! "Roll Over Beethoven" czcams.com/video/Iwccfu3EDSI/video.html
This is wonderful but the studio track on his album has an outstanding horn solo that perfectly comments the roughness of Leon’s voice. For me, I prefer Leon singing this song because it is his truth. Raw
Two of my favourite Leon Russell songs were "Hello Little Friend" and "Delta Lady", Joe Cocker did wonderful versions of both these tunes too.
Leon was the Music Director and he put the band together for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen legendary Tour in 1970. Hired the band, choir, practiced and hit the road in about 2 weeks time. There's a great 2021 documentary out about that tour.
And great clips from that tour available on YT.
At Willie Nelson's 80 th birthday celebration, sooo long ago..lol...Willie's two best friends, Leon Russel, and Ray Charles, sang this to him Live on Stage...Ray Charles and Leon have both passed away, and the both of them
singing to Willie , brought him to tears....get a chance please react to that iconic performance.❤
I love that version so much, and it brings me to tears every time I watch it! ❤
That's not correct. It was at Willie's 70th birthday party at the Beacon theater. What brought Willie to tears is he knew his good friend Ray Charles was dying. Ray passed away the folowing year.
@@stevenweinstein2290 I'm not one to spread misinformation, I truly thought it was his 80th...but I was correct in knowing that Ray was in ill health, and made journey to be there for his friend.
Hope we both get to that age, and have a friend, worth the trip.✌️
@@stevenweinstein2290 side note, just saw Tedeschi Trucks Band, June 14 th at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, every real band should perform at the Beacon, or the Old Lady Brady Theatre. ✌️
Excellent Song writer❤❤
Leon Russell's best album -- a treasury of great songs -- was Carney. It included the song Tightrope.
Leon was a master musician. Started listening to him in 1972 (junior high school). The Carney album I believe. Try his Wild Horses cover and Jumping Jack Flash bothe fromthe Rolling Stones.
Watch him do this song 50 years later when he was inducted to the hall of fame by Elton John
Thanks love this man
He was the guitar player in the tophat with Joe Cocker Mad dogs and Englishmen tour
This was a groundbreaking show. The first live stereo tv broadcast. I saw it in the newspaper. Cat Stevens led , then Leon Russell. Also the first time I ever heard him. there's a half dozen great songs on this broadcast. Most of these people would become Mad Dogs and Englishmen with Joe Coker and also the backup for George Harrison's the Concert for Bangladesh
He was so talented, and some of his collaborations with other icons of his day were fabulous.
Such a unique talent and an unmistakable voice. "Back To The Island" reveals another side.
It was long thought that Leon Russell's muse for the song was the singer Rita Coolidge, who claimed to be the inspiration and called it "the most beautiful song ever written." They met in the late '60s when Russell was one of the top session piano players and Coolidge was getting started as a singer. Russell wrote a song called "Delta Lady" about her that Joe Cocker recorded in 1969, but at a 2015 concert in New York City, he said "A Song For You" was not about her. Amy Winehouse also covered this song. Peace out.
Leon is from Tulsa Oklahoma. Where I live now. He’s a fellow Okie.
If you want a treat, check out the 1970 documentary about Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour and/or the double album. Leon both played and led the band which included so many incredible musicians:
Joe Cocker, Rita Coolidge, Donna Washburn, Claudia Lennear, Denny Cordell, Daniel Moore, Pamela Polland, Matthew Moore, Nicole Barclay, Bobby Jones - vocals
Leon Russell - lead guitar, piano, vocals, backing vocals
Don Preston - guitar, vocals, backing vocals
Chris Stainton - organ, piano
Carl Radle - bass guitar
Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, Chuck Blackwell - drums
Chuck Blackwell, Sandy Konikoff, Bobby Torres - percussion
Jim Horn, Bobby Keys - saxophone
Jim Price - trumpet

legend! The Carpenters cover is my favorite.i am sure some will say Luther Vandross or even him! but what a dude!
Love from Oklahoma, where the list of amazing musicians, songwriters, and good people have come from for over 70 years. ❤ To the Merchants. From the land of Red Dirt.
❤❤❤
Stranger in a Strange Land is also excellent.
Absolutely!❤
One of his best! Yes!
There are so many great covers of this gem however Ray Charles sings my favorite!
Great artist,Carney is a brilliant album.rip.
James Taylor sung a version with Allison Janney on a tv show called Mr Sunshine. The carpenters also covered it
New sub - really enjoying your reactions and your selections of songs. I never expected you to react to Leon before Joe Cocker but great job! #tightrope
My buddy and I were big Leon fans and saw him about a half a dozen times. We even stole a Leon Avenue street sign once to hang in the garage!
He made a song called Gone to Shiloh with Elton John in 2010. Neil Young sings it. It is well worth checking out.
Listen to Dave Mason's original version of "World In Changes" (from Alone Together) with Leon Russell on organ. Dave Mason is a Hall of Famer, and Leon lets it OUT!
The comments are full of information, thanks to all.
Glad y'all discovered Leon Russell, y'all's reaction is sweet and real😎
That was sweet Emily cooking, he wrote a song about called Sweet Emily. I think he does it on this video.
A bit inside but I missed seeing a can of Olympia Beer on the piano. "It's the water". Such a fun reminder of a very good talent. Thanks for loving this one.
The pride of Tulsa Oklahoma!
HIS GOOD FRIEND ( ELTON JOHN ) COVERED IT ALSO YOU GUYS! 😊 RIP☹TO LEON
Karen Carpenter did a really nice cover of this. PLUS THERE'S FOOTAGE OF Leon, Ray Charles , and Willie NELSON ONSTAGE TOGETHER DOING THIS.
This and his very sexy Delta Lady were written for his love at the time, Rita Coolidge, a genius in her own right, who wrote (uncredited) the second half of Layla, among other things
sound a like billy joel , i like it
Willie Nelson did a great cover😎
Hes the idol of Elton John
Check out the Carpenters version, it’s very good
Billie Joel did a version of this.
HI YOU GUYS! 😊WRITTEN BY ( LEON) BUT MADE POPULAR BY ( THE CARPENTERS ) ANDREI AND DOMENICA 💯👍 YOU KNOW THAT ANGEL KAREN!
Not sure why my post was deleted (maybe it was the like to the video). Check out Leon Russell and Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishmen LIVE version of "With a Little Help from My Friends" One of the few Best Concert Videos on CZcams.
I have noticed before that not all comments show if I don’t click the “Newest” button under where it says comments. Not just here but on any YT channel. Maybe that happened. As for Leon Russell and Joe Cocker I have to imagine some great stories from these two spending time together.
@@bradsense7431 Yes, having to sort by "newest" to see all comments is a relatively recent development on YT. It's a pain, because from what I've noticed, many comments appear multiple times using this method. As for Leon Russell and Joe Cocker "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" concert performances - I say YES to anything they can find on YT!
You got to listen to the original like always by Donnie Hathaway
Leon Russell is the original; written and recorded for his first solo album, released in 1970. Donny Hathaway released his cover in 1971.
You like piano. How about Ludovico Einaudi DIVINER
I like the covers of his tunes better. "This Masquerade" by The Carpenters is the best cover of any of his tunes IMO.
Superior.
Leon wrote and recorded it, but Ray Charles version is WAY WAY better!
so many other more beautiful versions of this song that would have brought you both to tears, I'm sure. Donny Hathaway, probably the best; Ray Charles, to name just a couple. This live version by Leon just doesn't capture the true depth of emotion and romanticism of this amazing song... not for me anyway.
I agree with you , add The Carpenters to your list
@@wildfire1120 oh yes, amazing!
I couldn’t disagree with a comment more if I tried.
@@sukie584 that's fine. I just don't think the voice and style lives up to the emotion of the song. Perhaps it's because I heard other better versions before his.
@@flubblert it’s his song. This is the voice & style. It’s magnificent.
Willie Nelson version is better
