Leon Russell's contribution to the music industry is unsurpassed. What an icon! When one hears George Benson singing 'This Masquerade " it is a Leon Russell song. His history is truly amazing. I was 10 years old when I heard him sing 'Young Blood' on my older sister's Concert From Bangladesh" album. I still beg a reaction to that version! Lol
Concert for Bangladesh was amazing and “Youngblood” always stood out for me as well!
Agreed as to contribution, great albums. He also was a part of the Wrecking Crew studio musicians, for a while, that produced hits for many artists of the day. His tribute to Rita Coolidge, Delta Lady is another great tune.
💗 💖 💘 💝 💟 ☮️
A national treasure. Leon Live and Carney are my two favorite albums. But all his records are great.
Mad dogs n English men tour with Joe Cocker🎉
❤Leon Russell....The master of space & time, may he RIP. Leon was a part of the famous "Wrecking Crew" a group of session musicians in LA during the 50's/60's who played on numerous hits back in the day. Check out the CZcams documentaries abt these musician's. Leon was also a big part of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. He's had other great songs...Tightrope, This Masquerade, Delta Lady & others.
This is without accompaniment. The single for radio has it. This song brings tears to my eyes both ways.
Leon played on EVERY Beach Boy song... In addition to a zillion other hit records
Leon was one of session players of The Wrecking Crew, that played on just about every hit tune from the 60s. If you've never heard of The Wrecking Crew, as most of us have not, I highly recommend you check out their documentary on CZcams. Trust me, you'll know every song they made for everyone from the Beach Boys to Sinatra. Amazing!
You should dig into the Mad Dogs and Englishman Tour with Leon Russell and Joe Cocker along with many others. It was a one of a kind tour.
Leon was a boss. Did it his way and what a way it was. Miss that man but cherish his music.
I saw Leon twice in the early 1970s, he danced on top of his piano at one of those shows. Then I got to see him just 6 months before he died... he couldn’t dance anymore but he was MAGICAL and had such an intense hold on all of us in the audience. A First Class rocker! He still had it!
The Master of Space and Time indeed ❤️
"When my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing this song
For you"
This is engraved on his headstone.
Oh, wow.
💗 💖 💘 💝 💟 ☮️
This whole show is available on youtube, called Homewood Sessions. Leon was born with birth defects: one leg shorter than the other (he limped); partial paralysis on the right side (his ring finger), half his tongue (which gave him his raspy voice) ... he played on so many records you've probably heard. He was truly one of God's special creatures.
The beauty of rock is that there is room for all kinds of voices and Russell's I find particularly moving. This is a clip from a PBS program called "Homewood Session" in 1970. It was the first simulcast in Los Angeles, meaning you could listen to the music through your stereo and watch the artist on television. As a teenager I remember running home so I wouldn't miss it. Now it seems like nothing but in 1970 to actually crank up your stereo and hear the artist while watching him was akin to walking on the moon. I recommend watching this session, it's spectacular. There is so much history in it. The woman cooking is Emily, Leon's friend and secretary. Russell was a consummate studio musician with a resume that would make you fall over. His first six albums were wonderful.
His collaborative effort with Joe Cocker remains timeless .
Brilliance understated .
Chod...Next for Leon..."Stranger in a Strange land"...from his Album "Leon Russell and the Shelter People"....this was a Record Company Produced Special For Leon...his band then was called "The Shelter Island People"....Leon was the Musical Master Mind behind Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen"
Legend doesn't begin to describe Leon Russel. I got the chance to see him live at the Milwaukee Summerfest 7 or 8 years ago. He came on stage with long white hair and beard, wearing a white suit and white hat. What a treat to hear him! You really need to look into him and do a deep, deep dive into his music.
He called his crew The Shelter People! Shelter Records. Recorded in LA, on the KCET soundstage, with his crew, Emily making a pie? and most importantly, Furry Lewis smoking, and soon to play a few in this show. I love this Homewood. Leon and The Shelter People shine.
I had the honor of seeing Leon Russell and Willie Nelson perform together in the mid 70s. What a tremendous musician!
Of A Song For You, Leon said, “I was trying to sing like Bonnie Bramlett. “At that time, we was all trying to sing like Bonnie Bramlett.” At his funeral, Bonnie sang the 1st verse of this, then sang Superstar (in tears, so it was more “Moving” than “Good”). Side note; writing credit on the original Superstar (titled “Groupie (Superstar)”& released as a single Dec. 1969 by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends), was just to Bonnie Bramlett & Leon Russell. Later, Delaney Bramlett also gained credit & Rita Coolidge has since said she should have been credited too.
LEON RUSSELL 🎹🎙🎼🎩👏👏👏❤❤❤ Master of Space and Time... pure genius 🎶
RIP Leon. Master of Space and Time
God Bless you for playing some Leon Russell. He was a poor kid from Oklahoma, who used to go down to the Black part of town, and sneek into the night club to listen to all of the great Black Blues and Jazz music. He got caught (he was only 11) and after the owner talked to him, he let the kid come in anytime he wanted. He was a piano prodigy at 12 yrs old, and wanted to play like those guys in the night club. It's a long story. About 15 yrs ago, all of the people he knew in show business and the music world began to wonder where Leon was. He was huge in the 60s and 70s. Elton John, found him old broke, and living under a bridge. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and introduced by Elton John. Leon was shaking, and could barely walk to the podium where he was going to thank everyone. He barely had enough strength in his voice for anyone to hear him. Elton, and everyone in the building was in tears, after hearing about his life, being homeless and sick. He died shortly after he was honored. He was such a great pianist, he was regularly asked by starts like Frank Sinatra, and Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker and many others, to play the piano parts on the record in the studio. So much more to his story. His hit songs were "Delta Lady, Tightrope, and of course, A song for you. Thanks
uh, no Leon was'nt living under a bridge. He was married, living on a farm about 45 min from Nashville, and still touring. I saw him a couple of times during that period just before he and Elton hooked up for that record. Yea the venues were small and the bus was old, but he wasn't destitute and living under a bridge.
RIP Leon. You were the best. ✨️❤️
Thanks mate for giving this iconic artist the attention he so richly deserves...he was a session musician early on and played on so many great albums of that period....beautiful tune...perfect if you're feelin' down and missing someone special....peace
💗 💖 💘 💝 💟 ☮️
The woman cooking was a close friend... he wrote SWEET EMILY for her.
AWESOME I LOVE this video.
Leon is where Jim Henson got the idea for the Dr. TEETH Muppet.
Esp with that shirt on. Sometimes Leon wore a Tophat & Vest
Did not know that,. But makes sense!!! Thank you!!
My parents brought me to see Leon Russell perform live at Varsity Stadium in Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦 on August 9th, 1973...
I was 7yrs old. R.I.P. Mr. Russell
'Stranger In A Strange Land' = thoroughly pertinent to today's world milieu .
Glad to see someone giving Leon a little respect. This song was recorded while he was doing an unscripted program that was broadcast on PBS, Homewood Session, Leon Russel and Friends. He also had a studio that was an old church in Tulsa. Elton John looked up to him and paid his respect by doing a tour with him. I wore out his album Stranger in a Strange Land many years ago. His cover of A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall (Bob Dylan song) is great.
I remember well when this song was first released... really takes me back to a simpler time. He has so many great tunes. His collaboration with Joe Cocker is iconic and his album with Elton John is awesome.
You should definitely check out his track "Lady Blue" and the rest of the "Will "O The Wisp" LP. You won't regret it! PS: He is a classically trained pianist.
A really great album !
"Lady Blue" is in my top five all-time favorites.
Fantastic song! You MUST listen to Ray Charles’ cover of this song. A masterpiece!
This was recorded in December 1970 in a television studio clled Homewood (KCET) in Hollywood. It’s one of the greatest 60 min of music on YT. Leon’s interest in doing the show is that it was the first TV simulcast done in stereo. As the emcee says, this was an unscripted and unrehearsed six hour session edited down to one hour for TV. Leon was at the top of his game. Imagine singing background vocals for 6 hours as the two women in this show did! There was no audiece, just many musicians and friends. The guy with the curly hair facing the piano is Joe Cocker’s son.

Carpenters covered this, "Superstar" and "This Masquerade" , all written by Leon Russell. I read or heard in an interview that he was a fan of Karen's voice and Richard's arrangements. They are worth checking out IMHO.
Not so humble an opinion, IMHO...a great opinion. I second this request. I did NOT know Russell was a Karen fan! Learn something new every day! :)
The original song was called "Groupie (Superstar)-- Delaney and Bonnie and Bonnie Bramlett and Leon get credit ,but who wrote the lyrics is not clear and Rita Coolidge had the idea for the song and later on Delaney only gets credit because him and wife Bonnie were a musical performing duo ..It has more wannabe songwriting credits than what makes sense because Rita says she deserves credit for it also and she claims credit for the piano coda of Layla by Derek and The Dominoes ..
@@VIDSTORAGE and Carpenters had to change the line, "I can't wait to sleep with you again" to "I can't wait to be with you again" (couldn't have KC saying THAT! Lol)
I mistakenly forgot to put Bonnie Bramlett's name there. Never knew all that about Rita Coolidge though. I learn so much on here. Thanks!
@@christopheryochum3602 I wish I could find the interview I saw years ago with Leon after Karen passed. He said he loved her cover of this song. He also complimented Richards arrangement.
One of his more soothing songs has to be Back To The Island. Give it a listen.
That's one of his best. For an obscure one try "Down on the Base".
His signature song; you stumbled onto a masterpiece Chod.
Leon can truly sing in a melodic voice. It’s a choice, a style. Check out Bluebird, or Manhattan island Serenade, or You Girl and One More Love Song from his own Paradise Studios. This performance takes place in a studio, I’ve forgotten the details, but it was some type of a television production. He wrote a song, Sweet Emily, about the woman who was cooking.
Russell's "Hummingbird" covered by B. B. King - beautiful thing to hear.
I'm so glad you've found Leon Russell! He was a prolific songwriter, although most were hits for other people. "A Song For You" is so identified with Donny Hathaway that a lot of people think he wrote it. Leon was a very in-demand session musician, also a composer, arranger, and bandleader. He played keyboards (started playing piano at age 4), guitar, bass guitar, and baritone horn. This song is a clip from a TV special, Leon Russell and Friends "Homewood Session," Vine Street Theatre, Hollywood, CA - originally broadcast on December 5, 1970 (KCET Los Angeles). It was unscripted and unrehearsed. Six hours were filmed, cut down to an hour for broadcast. czcams.com/video/4bwMqliLXZQ/video.html
he was part of the Wrecking Crew. He also sounded better when he was younger but he was always a piano player, writer of music first, singer second.
It's nice to run into a reactor who actually knows about music. Few do. Leon isn't a great singer but that isn't the point. This is about expression. That's what this is - raw expression . You said it yourself and it's dead on.
Thank you for this! Leon Russell has long been a favorite. Just ask my children. Leon has been on over 400 recordings I read somewhere. He has a huge catalog. His voice is awesome. Truly unique. Love him. 💘
Willie Nelson has done this song, he was buddies with Leon. Willie does it famously in his first movie "Honeysuckle Rose" at the end of the movie, Willie is trying to apologize for cheating on his wife. His wife in the move Dianne Cannon is on the stage while he sings this song & all is forgiven by the end of the song. Leon played with Joe Cocker, he was playing with George Harrison at the Bangledesh concert & Leon was friends with Willie Nelson. But he knew everybody He disappeared for awhile I to the bottle & Elton John helped bring him back & got him to record another album before he passed..
Leon from my town, Tulsa. Saw him many times here. Love Stranger in a Strange Land & Jumping Jack Flash/Youngblood from the Concert for Bangladesh.
Leon ='s Love....Leon was on in my house growing up in the 60's and 70's...right along side all the Great Classic Rockers...Leon is the man....the riches he has brought to music and all the Great acts he wrote,Played,Scored,Directed and Produced would take a week.....MORE LEON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love Leon Russell! His music is classic. He also collaborated with Elton John.
This is such an incredible tune. Covered by everyone for Willie Nelson to Whitney. The version on Whitney's last album is so fng good. Leon is a bomb. Soulful and so good
You must listen to the version of this song by Ray Charles, it makes me cry and was recorded not long before he passed, you might have already done this by Donny Hathaway too, that's epic also ❤️
I love you in a place where there's no space or time....... greatest lyric ever RIP Mr Russell 🙏♥️
Leon's life is over, but I'll never forget when we were together. RIP Leon...
HEARD LEON ~20YRS AGO SMALL CLUB CALI ... HE WAS TEETERING BUT GOT IT DONE ON KEYBOARD
Delta Lady...Tight Rope...He was also part of the Wrecking Crew back in the day. Also, check out his version of Jumping Jack Flash on George Harrisons Bangla Desh album.
I saw Leon back in 1973 in Australia, yes he was phenomenal, great musician
Leon was a prodigy and developed into multifaceted brilliance...musical director of Joe Cockers's Mad Dogs and Englishmen...the documentary is great.
The Wrecking Crew associations. His writing. Elton John recorded with him a few years ago, as he was declining... cause he admired him so much.
I saw him in a little blues club in Phoenix around 2007-ish.
Oh what a night.
My everlasting fave.. 'Stranger in a Strange Land'.
Lady Blue is another great song.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Leon's a genuine legend. Love this song, and no version is better than, or even rivals his own, with the possible lone exception of Ray Charles' rendition which earned him the 1993 best male R&B vocal performance. Started covering this on solo acoustic guitar in clubs and busking streets and subways in '77. See also 'Tightrope' and 'Delta Lady' by Leon.
Beautiful song...always liked Leon Russell....alot of great songs...try Stranger in a Strange Land & Delta Lady...
I used to listen to Leon a lot - he was fab back in the day both with the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and Concert for Bangladesh
Leon made so much great music like the masquerade, Tightrope, Delta lady and much Much more!
Fantastic musician
Leon Russell was the original composer of this song. Donny Hathaway and Ray Charles have both recorded popular versions of it, amongst other artists.
I love your channel. If you liked this ... then you need to check out Leon Russell "Stranger in Strange Land" Album version not live - Masterpiece. Lyrics are as pertinent today as they ever were.
Leon Russell is one of the greats.... check out Stranger in A Strange Land... also, on a side note, he's the piano player in the house band in the amazing T.A.M.I. Show from 1964... regarding the singing, Bob Dylan opened the door to people with unusual voices... for example, Hendrix started to sing because he figured if Bob Dylan can sing, then he can sing too!
Must do Tightrope and Lady Blue by Leon
The band "Little Feat". The song "Spanish Moon" from the live "Waiting for Columbus" album. Do you even consider suggestions from non-paying subscribers?
hi i am a new to this channel i am a new double amputee and this channel uplifts me so much thanks for all the great videos like this .
great songwriter. He also wrote hits for others including This Masquerade, a hit by George Benson
I love how you go to different music and don't just follow the others!
Delta Lady and Tightrope next please. Leon was a prolific writer. (e.g. Superstar - Carpenters) I put him in the same category as Dr. John
Tight Rope
Give his version of Jumping Jack Flash
The Carpenters like to record Leon Russell songs, including this song and Masquerade and Superstar (which was a big hit by the Carpenters).
All while leaving his Winston burning.
Leon was the bandmaster for Joe Cocker at Woodstock and for a year or two on tour. He was one of a small group of musicians from Oklahoma who moved to LA in the early ‘60s. His other soon-to-be famous friends included David Gates (Bread), Delaney Bramlett, and Paul Williams (wrote The Carpenters’ early hits).
So many great musician's have covered this song, including Whitney Houston on her last album. One version you should definitely check out is the live version from Willie Nelson's 70th birthday concert in 2003. It's Leon Russell, Willie Nelson and Ray Charles doing this song in what would be Ray's last live performance before he lost his battle with cancer. Ray owns that performance. After singing one verse each, Leon and Willie bow out and let Ray take it home alone as they both stare in amazement. It's powerful.
Leon liked Karen Carpenters cover best.
Delta Lady -- one of my favorites.
Unique, young sir
Leon Russel, studio musician...
Leon wrote so many of my favorite songs! Check out his catalog, you will be amazed!
Check out Delta Lady from this same Homewood TV performance.
Great reaction. You need to check out The Carpenters version of this song. Karen voice is amazing. Find the 4 minute version or you will miss the awesome sax solo. We'll worth the listen. Again great reaction.
☮️💜. Please check out Leon, Willy and Ray Charles singing this for Willy’s 80th Bday
Check out Lady Blue he also wrote " Superstar " Carpenters. Honky Tonk Women , This Masqurade"George Benson Hes at his studio in Calif.i beleive.
Beautiful
Stranger in a Strange Land is 🔥🔥🔥
That lady in the back ground you saw cutting up food was his wife.
I also was wondering where it was recorded. It reminded me of something I would see on PBS on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when we only had four channels. The alternatives would be sports on two of the channels, some local program about bread on another or PBS with something I found amusing. I did see this on the video description " "Vine Street Theater presents Homewood:
Originally aired in 1971 on PBS, actually KCET in Los Angeles at the Vine Street Theater on Hollywood and Vine, a theater with a little studio in the back part of the building, which is not there anymore. They shot 6 hours, but only broadcast 1 hour, unscripted and unrehearsed. czcams.com/video/37dw2r45Xzg/video.html
Leon is a musician's musician. Thx for review I've been loving him since Concert for Bangladesh tho I'd skip Ravi Shanur from that concert😂. Thx again from Pittsburgh PA USA 🇺🇸
Yup...
Forget how good this guy is.
Makes me wanna hear some DrJohn!
When are you going to check out Leon Redbone? Get your Dad to react with you.
Love your reactions.
Donnie Hathaway also covers this song. You need to listen to that one too
This is NOT A COVER. Leon wrote this song.
My favorite version of this tune is by Donny Hathaway. I love Leon's as well. The Carpenters also have a version.
Donny Hathaway did a great rendition of this song btw.
Your Going To Like This One !
Leon Russell/Tightrope studio version
Check out Donnie Hathaway’s version of this song…… beautiful
Try 'the paradise sessions' with JJ Cale , too long for a reaction but great view . Masters of the craft .
Which came first, this song or Elton Johns "Your Song" song? They sound very much alike.
Norleans jazz rock at it's best
Karen Carpenter does The Masquerade that is pretty good
You hight a decadent song writer a member of the wrecking crew he wrought this masquerade, tight rope superstar ! Lady blue and many more he influenced Elton John, Check out some he’s work .
