    "Sam's Trains run of bad luck" is rapidly becoming an urban myth, so I'm so glad you called it out. You're one of the only reviewers I know who takes the time to look at the pros and cons of the mechanism in any detail, which I find really useful.

    I wish manufacturers would put brass gears back in their locos, they would bed in and the loco would run smoother. More running in is needed, but the end result is worth it.

      @Beatlefan67 Před 2 lety +3

      I agree! Some of my (very) old locos with brass gears still go extremely well whereas I have a Jinty with a shredded large wheel...

    • @fugubarakun4907
      @fugubarakun4907 Před 2 lety

      And it's made worse by the fact that all parts suppliers are perpetually out of stock of the replacement plastic gears

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 2 lety +2

      That's interesting - I don't think I've ever seen plastic gears get worn away... only ever worm drives! As long as they're reasonably well lubricated, I don't think plastic gears are a problem. Worm drives are different - much more force involved there... and most quality locos do have brass worms, which I agree with!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

      @@SamsTrains I specialize in buying used, so I've managed to get locomotives that "run but don't move" fairly affordable. Particularly with the Chinese hornby locomotives, they have that plastic (nylon) idler gear that seems to skip a tooth and strip. I recently got a 2nd hand A1 that the worm gear on the motor had essentially ground off the teeth on one side of the idler like a Dremel.

    I've been wanting you to do a video on this for quite a while as I'd been considered getting the LB&SCR H2 instead of the LBSC H1 hoping to get some of the premium features of the GNR C1 which are implied to be included by the exorbitant price tag. You have save me a great deal of money and disappointment, and for that I am grateful.
    The work you put into these productions is to be commended and you provide us in the hobby with a useful service.

    I think I remember hearing somewhere that the reverend Wilbert Awdry had originally intended for Henry from Thomas & Friends to be an H2 Atlantic, but the illustrator for the Railway Series misrepresented him as an experimental LNER 4-6-0, and later an LMS 5mt 4-6-0.

    With regards the cab..the opening flap is a heat/glare shield to protect the driver I think, as opposed to a fire hole door. The firehole door is a flap, North Eastern style one.

    Lovely locos. I have had H2 'Beachy Head' in BR early livery for around a year now and it performs really well. I think I paid about £130 from Rails and I run it with a 'Birdcage' set. 'Beachy Head' was the last Atlantic to run in Britain and was scrapped in 1958. Plans are afoot to build a new one from scratch; an old boiler was found, and I believe the framing is built.

    • @PGW85Productions

      @@miloseal25 What do you mean by "who"? I'm confused, I talked about who already. Unless you meant what? But I also mentioned that too. I don't understand.
      But anyway, I'll clarify with more detail, from the start:
      The original idea for Henry by Wilbert Awdry (the original author) was to have Henry by a GCR Atlantic - designed by John G Robinson. This is what Awdry wanted, not the LB&SCR H2 Atlantic. But because of illustrator errors once the books were in publication, Wilbert Awdry ended up with Henry in his first build, which has no real-life basis, but is allegedly based on (fictional) flawed prototype drawings for the GNR/LNER A1. These drawings would've been created during the early designing process for the A1 class (similar drawings did allegedly exist for such a design).
      After the illustrators kept illustrating getting Henry wrong, Wilbert Awdry wrote Henry's crash in "The Flying Kipper" to rewrite Henry into an LMS Black 5 (or depending on your source, an engine extremely similar to a Black 5). This is what Henry in his rebuilt form is. Most people accept Henry's rebuild as a regular Black 5. I personally believe Henry resembled an a Black 5 to begin with, and over time was slowly rebuilt into a regular Black 5.

    out of curiosity, do you ever 'upgrade' models once you've uncovered flaws? i.e. changing out motors (and or motor mounts), pickup systems or wiring and such like.. If you do, would you consider doing post-upgrade reviews and if you don't, would you consider giving it a try? with your FDM little helper I can't imagine fabricating your own mounts/hardware mounting systems would be too far out of reach, but regardless great videos and thanks for getting me back into the hobby after a decade away

    I'm not really a OO person but I have watched a few of your vids (good by the way) and it seems to be a common theme that they don't run properly, and OO modellers seem to accept it! I work in O gauge and many RTR models, often by the same manufacturers, also have the same issues. I would have assumed that the first priority for a manufacturer is that the model loco actually works! Perhaps this reflects the (too) cheap cost of both OO and O RTR models, and the subsequent corner cutting?

    Fun fact: The new build H2 is almost finished. In fact, the engine itself is finished, it just needs the lining finished, and a boiler test!

    Nice locomotive and a very fair review Sam......
    I couldn't agree with you more about the price and value..
    Your £120 makes more sense than £200 plus....so you got a good deal........
    Prices are starting to creep up more and more.......and obtaing goof VFM is something we all have to watch......
    Just as an aside.........Accurascale are to bring out a new GUV in a year or so, and whilst it looks good, (in the review I have seen of the prototype), I am not sure that it is worth the likely asking price of £58.........yep! £58........

    Absolutely stunningly beautiful loco, possibly the most beautiful model in OO I've ever seen.
    This livery is, as you say, just so rich. If it looks right, it is right, as they say, and this is so right. £150 would be OK to charge for this I reckon, £220 is a bit of a swizz, really...
    Sprung buffers are the biggest dead cat ever, however, why do any OO models even have them?
    As an industrial and graphic designer I'm trained to make an informed judgement on aesthetics and this ticks all the boxes.
    If we don't buy the models the companies will either go out of business or only the rich will get to buy them. I always haggle in the model shop and always get a tenner off the asking price, but then I'm just a bit tight in the wallet :)
    The mechanism seems very poor and cheap'n'nasty, a three pole motor is not good enough bearting in mind how cheaply one can buy a five pole example from China these days and electrical tape looks like a bodge of the lowest and most desperate order.
    I think you do take things as you find them, without an agenda, so I enjoy your reviews a great deal and find other folks moaning quite amusing!
    All in all, I'm love with this loco a bit and I'm now considering which of my children I can sell to get one... (probably the ginger child)
    PS - I wonder if reaction to a review could be a new genre of CZcams video?

    • @adriannash2705
      @adriannash2705 Před 2 lety

      That sounds like it could be really interesting to see a reaction to a review of this. I know that the concept is very similar to TheRussianBadger and everyone that reacts to him, since at it's core Badger plays games (most of the time with friends), makes reviews about them (albeit without a rating system) where he talks about the good and bad about games and his personal opinion on it or aspects of the game like almost all of his RS6 videos, and people do reacts to his videos all the time

    Do try get your hands on a Trix version of the Bavarian B VI class 2-4-0s sometime, Sam. Lovely things, those! I own two of them by Märklin and they are solid runners with easy maintainance and built like right tanks.

    Hi Sam, great review and I hope it will help modelling fans to think seriously about buying one at the railroad robbery prices the manufacturers are asking. A point to note is that they all quote the higher Chinese wages and brexit , and tax hikes to imports. Nah it’s their investors and shareholders wanting the largest amount of return for the lowest investment. The amount of models produced ( we are not talking about a hundred of the same model ) but a hundred thousand at the minimum, and those are not at the same time shipment, they are over a minimum of 5 years, and the actual cost to the manufacturers ( Hornby, Bachman etc ) is apparently 1 tenth of the cost, tax is relevant only to the local government it is sold at ( uk is far from perfect, but is better than others ) shipping is less expensive than the companies claim, and brexit rules do not apply to China. Unless they are stupid enough to arrange for transportation through Europe by road, rail, sea, as they will pay because the goods touch the ground?? And by the state of some of the models, they fell .
    It’s the usual corporate excuse to make more profit, especially as you are well aware that some of the models have been around for 10 + years ( being generous, as a lot of them have been around 20+ years using the same design and tooling) . Don’t pay out large amounts of hard earned money for items which are far too expensive. With the current situation, they will suffer even worse in the future if more restrictions and lockdowns are the normal. Well done Sam, highly recommended channel.

    • @Poliss95
      @Poliss95 Před 2 lety

      Import VAT hasn't changed. It's still 20%. There is no duty on model railway products.
      They say they had to increase prices because shipping container charges have gone through the roof. Funny how they didn't reduce prices when shipping container charges crashed through the floor a (very) few years ago. The other thing that increases prices is the exchange rate between the $US and the Chinese Yuan. The companies pay with $US.
      Models are not produced in a hundreds thousand minimum. There really is only a few thousand of each model produced. The model rail industry is very small.

    Ah, the LBSCR H2 (and it's earlier variant H1). Basically a C1 with bigger (and far more efficient!) cylinders. Yes, the GNR Atlantics were good engines, especially after fitting with superheaters, but they needed to be thrashed to get the best out of them. LBSCR's offering did not need thrashing.

    • @18EStudios
      @18EStudios Před 2 lety

      The Brighton Atlantics were very heavily based on the C1s to begin with so it would make sense tbh. They're just an upgraded version of the C1 IMO
