- As the sun was setting on September 10, 2014, 14-year-old Abigail stepped to the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge, preparing to jump. Today, she is sharing a powerful and important message about recovery and community with the rest of the world.
Abby is a high school freshman in Westchester County, New York. She is an avid debater and soccer player participating in both high school and club teams, as well the robotics club in her school.
Outside of school, Abby loves reading, photography, playing guitar, listening to music, doing crosswards and binge-watching Netflix, but her real passion is writing. She enjoys hearing people vocalize their opinions and thoughts on all topics through different types of media. Her talk at TEDxLaSierraUniversity was the first public presentation of her work.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
"Depression is not a weakness." - Abby
But it makes you weak.
I can relate, I've been battling depression for years. I have days where my mind goes to that dark place 😢
How are you coping with depression
Abby is a courageous woman with a golden heart and a warm soul.
She is an incredible story teller and public speaker!!
Thank you so much for helping others!!
We love you Abby 🌟
In awe of the strength of you Abby!!
Brave and powerful. You have a talent for authenticity and public speaking.
Sincere, authentic and informative talk. And aside from that, great public speaking skill at such a young age!
Great talk. But wait till your 51 years old and NEVER had a relationship in your life and no friends.See how positive you are then.
you rock! I wish I could meet you, spend a day with you. I also, have struggled with depression since I was 15,Im now 55. Many, many lost years. Years that couldve been so productive, spent just trying to stay above sinking. Thankyou for you brave sharing

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How did you stay above sinking? How do you live? House, money, career... family... if you can tell... I am scared about it... thank you so much if you answer
@@georgianaaiostinei3334 I just put one foot in front of the other and try to allow the small positives to lift me up, if only briefly.
I'm 53 now and know it's any day now.
@@georgianaaiostinei3334. Hi, I didn't see this until just now. My faith in God is what has kept me going
It is hard to keep on going when life seems hopeless..
Just i need to walk not for myself but for mom and dad.
Courageous and very well articulated! Thank you for speaking up for people like me! You're an inspiration!
Wow, thanks this is really beautiful. I know now how important it is to keep this topic out in the open. My ex committed suicide months ago after suffering from depression for years...but I was always there for her...until she moved away. Still tried though, she told no one what was about to happen, now we hurt in the confusing horror of her leaving. Rip my dear Rachel Roth
You will find many teenagers on Omegle who are depressed. I have helped many of them. I am also depressed and I can understand how it feels. Thanks you are such a brave girl.
Thank you Abby, you have helped many by sharing your story.
Inspiring and courageous. So proud of you.
i think hearing other people talk about what’s wrong helps me
It is heartache. Thank you for sharing.
Keep on going even when things are hopeless...
As a suicidal 14 year old I relate to this a lot. I agree with everything you said and you are also a great public speaker

An amazing young woman. Thank you
Thanks for your story.
Thank You!!!
Very powerful and inspiring. I thought it was just me who hated those early teen years :)
True words. Just think of your family and try to overcome this. Consider it as the biggest exam of your life and pass it rather then giving up on your life. And trust me life will b very beautiful after this.. Don't let anyone or anything in this world control you.
Our brain is very strong if we don't keep it under control it will start controlling us and then coming out of depression will be very tough. U can win against anyone but winning over your ownself over the person you are in your darkest days will give you the joy of lifetime. Be happy and make others happy. Anyone can be going through this please do not make fun of someone who is sad or is in trouble. They need you they need every soul around them for their help.
Bro i am suffering this since last 8 years...In depression phase it is very hard to get out of bed.. u can't really imagine
I've heard of depression. I thought it was that you were sad. Then, @ 62,.. I struggled to stop a retirement I foolishly put-in for. I failed. With all the extreme stress, I got insomnia, anxiety,.. and depression. 😫🙏... the worst nightmare I've ever, and still experiencing. No want to live, or do anything, go anywhere.. and activities, hobbies I used to enjoy,... no pleasure . It's so mentally paralyzing, and physically weakening. I'm struggling so hard..... To everyone suffering, 🙏pray for your recovery, and happiness again asap.❤🫶🙏
I don’t have any close friends like you and this makes me feel hooeless
Close friends can be very hard to find. Any honest person would admit to this.
We love you!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Why is it we share how we truly feel, we call it like it is, "I'm depressed," people give their support, and we are supposed to just pop out of it the next day? Anyone?
This is the best talk I have heard regarding depression. Thank you Abby!
I needed this I suffer from depression and almost made it to death from overdosing had to be on a breathing machine for 4 days I still walk through deep mud every day feeling hopeless and just going thru the motions
Tracy Hunt - Hang in there. It sucks. It really really fuckin sucks I know, god I now. But people care believe me. You're not alone
Tracy Hunt I love you
10:30 I relate so much...
Nice job Abby :)
Yeah I took a long time to associate and lend my face to Depression to help other sufferers ...Depression made me way stronger actually . Depression Sufferers dont attention seek in fact they hide away ...that is the main issue . If you are seeking attention ...its something else and not depression . I for so long hid away until it nearly cost me my life and now I want to help spread the word ...talk about it please . Dont die for no apparent reason
Dam she brave.....she’s 14.....I won’t even present something even when I was 19
Had I died at birth, that's what I thought 'cause the pain is too much for me to take.
Zombie zimik I love you
Same here
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm confused if I'm really depressed or not?
Is it extreme sadness or depression?
How r u now?
But I really don't think I can be that strong, I don't see any other way of getting peace 😢😢😢
Hi I'm feeling the same to can we talk about it
How are you today dear
The LORD JESUS CHRIST will set you free.
