- Gabriele Susanne Kerner (Hagen, 24 march 1960), better known under the name Nena, is a German singer.
Between 1982 and 1986, she scored many hits as singer of the band with the same name in the German speaking countries.
Best known is the hit '99 Luftballons' in the year 1983, that became a worldwide hit and reached #1 in the Netherlands.
This video, originally made for the Dutch music program TopPop and broadcast on 13 March 1983 in AVRO’s TopPop program, was shot in a Dutch military training camp 'Schietkamp De Harskamp', with the band performing the song on a stage in front of a backdrop of fires and explosions provided by the Dutch Army. Towards the end of the video, the band are seen taking cover and abandoning the stage, which was unplanned and genuine since they believed the explosive blasts were getting out of control.' the fields outside the Toppop studios in the Netherlands.

to the people of germany east and west, back in the day of the cold war the red ballons was confused as a signal of war but here in the philippines it was a very popular song and was loved by most teenagers of that era, the 80's, it was one of the songs that brought the house down and a fave song for parties, very energetic and lively though we couldn't understand its german version but loved it! so with the english version. both songs remind us of how easy and simple life was back then. until i read what it meant nd why it was composed as a reminder of that event that almost brought war, but all is well now and lets all live in peace no matter where we are....

The B side of this single is in English and although I'm American and understand German, the German version is way better.
I explained to a friend that the English version tells the story, but the Deutsche hits the bulleye. It's a minor weakness in music that translated songs still have to fit into the music and tempo.
