    That 350 doesn't expand much ... basically acts as a solid. It's no wonder it shot straight through. The 450 is a beast ... 450 all day, every day (unless you just want less recoil)

    I had the .450 first, buying an upper after wanting one for years. Took a few deer with it. Then when the .350 came out, got one as well. Long story short, I sold the .450 and all the ammo I had for it, and continue to hunt with the .350. Mine likes to shoot the heavier bullets. It doesn't cycle well with the 145 gr or 150 gr loads. Perfect deer AR if your shots are under 150 yds.

    I always love the milk jug tests. That said, the Federal loadings for the 350L has poor terminal performance. The Winchester PowerPoint 150 and 180 grain loads dump a lot more energy. That feller on Social regressive has a ton of videos on the 350L and he gel tested it at various ranges. The Federal loads were one of the worst performing loads, as far as expansion and dumping energy. The wound track wasn't impressive either. Now this might be a great load for larger animals, such as black bear, elk, maybe even moose, but not suitable for deer. The Hornady loads were so-so. Same with Browning loads. The PowerPoint loads dumped a ton of energy and left very good wound channels and did so even at 200 yards. I would snag a box of the PowerPoint loads and give those a try, I bet between the paper plate test and milk jug tests, the results will vary quite a bit.

    Hey Adam, great video. "I" think the difference in the distance of penetration is due to the fact that you 350 Legend ammo is a lead soft point, whereas the 450BM was a hollow point bullets. The hollow point is going to expand more which slows the forward progress of the bullet. If you could find some 450BM lead soft point ammo, then redo the test, I think you would have significantly more penetration. I have both of those calibers, my 450BM (and 458 SOCOM) are on an AR-15 platform, and let me tell ya... you know when you've shot those rounds!! lol. Bill

  • @majikr80

    I would think (and this is just my opinion) that if the 450 BM round that was used wasn't a hollow point and was a solid soft point like the 350 legend. I believe that they would have done the same. Since the 450 was a hollow point it just expanded faster like it is designed to do. Federal does make a 300 grain in a solid soft point and I'm sure it would blow through all 7. Again just my opinion.

      Absolutely with you on this
      It’s the same when he did the comparison with 50Ae and 500 smith and Weston , the 50 Ae ammo was a large hollow point and close to 120 grains lighter than the 500 s&w round which was a heavier jacketed flat nose lead point
      Compassion was even on the same page

    • @patrickliston9595
      @patrickliston9595 Před rokem

      I agree. 450 bm clearly has more power. I like that he used the same ammo brand and label though. Both of these would take care of a deer and the 450 hp would do more damage to a deer than a soft point 450 would. The 350 could have benefited from a hp bullet, but the soft point gives it reliable penetration for a large deer.

    The results were what I expected. Both are great cartridges and each one does well in its suited application. The .350 Legend is a smaller diameter and lighter projectile and I would expect a higher velocity and ballistic coefficient allowing for greater range and penetration than the .450 Bushmaster. There is also the price point for ammo.
    The .450 Bushmaster is a heavier projectile with possibly a lower ballistic coefficient and is useful for up to 150 yd. shots where one needs all the energy dumped into the target. Ammo cost for the 450 is higher for store bought, but very reasonable if one reloads.
    Both are great cartridges and a Godsend for those who live in previously rifle restricted states that are now allowing rifles with straight walled cartridges.

    That Federal 350 legend load would not be a good round for deer or hog in my opinion, to much penetration and not near enough energy being dumped into the body of the animal which is what causes the animal to expire almost immediatley.
    Now, for Buffalo, elk, moose, bear or maybe really huge hogs... yeah the particular bullet would probably be OK.
    Personally, for deer or hog and Id say the reat I mentioned here also, I'd rather have that 450 Bushmaster since it delivered more energy on the target with the better expansion which controlled the penetration to a more suitable amount for most North American game.
    If ai had the 350 Legend I would be working up a load using more fragible boolit for less penetration and better stopping power by way of more tapid expansion when hitting the target.
    Great video as always.... keep up the excellent work sir.

      Also, the .450 is limited in velocity due to case capacity, as well as factory loadings being tailored to the ar15 action, a handloader with a bolt gun can squeeze a couple hundred more fps out of it..
      I load a Hornady 225gr ftx bullet for the. 45 long colt at about 2450fps, for my bolt action, it smacks the crap out of a deer.

    If the industry wants us to shoot more then they need to make an 250 and they can call it what they want but I would think a good name for it could be : infamous , notorious , incognito , etc . Although I think if they made a similar bullet for the BM as the Legend or even more rifle shaped it would probably go through a dozen of those jugs . Although we truly don't know how many jugs the Legend can go through as it went through all those jugs you had there . I think this test was a little about bullet shapes , piercing bullet vs wad cutter and soft point , which the 350 clearly didn't expand as much as it should have as I think it should have stopped in the 3rd or 4th jug vs whatever the BM'S bullet is ( maybe fmj flat nosed ) .

    .350 Legend does have several bullet designs available for hunting. But I don't know of any one is making a hollow point. With its penetration power, a holly point would be devestating

    It is with the waterjugs the same as with the ballistic gel:the .350 bullet does not open properly, it behaves like a FMJ!!
    Hunting with it would be a bad idea!

    From what i have seen in other videos the 350 wont expand it act like a fmj and only way they could stop the bullet is they put a board in the back of the ballistic gel block to stop it and the bullet did not expand and the butllet looked like you could shoot it again

      The loading, not the caliber. Federal for the 350 is a no go in my book. Winchester loads are the best of the commercial loadings for the 350 and they expand well.

    The .450 will kill on one end and cripple on the other! It makes things real dead. That said, I have 2 bolt guns in .350 legend, Winchester XPR and a Savage 110. I live in southern Ohio. I shoot 165 Hornady hand loads at 2250 from both. I have taken multiple deer each year since the caliber came out. All dropped on the spot. No kick, no muzzle blast, makes things dead, what's not to love.

  • @arthurdirindinjr1792
    @arthurdirindinjr1792 Před rokem

    If the 350 Legend made it through 7 jugs that tells me it didn't expand and the fact the bullets travel path remained relatively straight is further indication of a lack of bullet expansion
    All things being equal a bullet with a smaller frontal area will almost always out penatrait a bullet with a larger frontal area
    .358 vs .452 is a significant difference in frontal diameter
    Now add in one bullet with much larger flat frontal area vs a much smaller conical front area and not only isn't this an apples to apples comparison but one will unquestionably out penatrait the other and no guessing which one
    IMO it is essentially pointless to do a bullet penatration comparison test using two completely different bullet designs and significantly different weights.

    Question Hoot....the box of 450 Bush says 300 gr hollow point. The 350 Legend box says 180 soft point. Later in the video you mention they are the exact same bullet. Therefore, if the 450 was an HP we would expect what we saw of the round - mushroomed. So naturally the Soft Point is going to penetrate more than a HP, right?

    Poor bullet performance for 350. Unless you want a solid. I had a 356 that did the opposite, bullets were blowing up before complete penitration on deer took 3 shots to put down a doe. None made it through 3 lung shots. 200 grain. At 75 yards. Many years ago.
