The positive cable is meant to stay on the battery, when removing the battery. You remove the positive cable at the main fuse by the negative cable, then remove the battery. The seat can stay in place, just move the seat all the way forward.

Alex - I run two batteries in my defender. Electrically I run a fridge, camp lights and a seemingly endless number of chargers. There is a substantial amount of electrics to make all that happen. On the day I took this video I had to trouble shoot fuses popping and had to pop the passengers seat squab out to get to it. Not a big job, but wig flies heat and time pressure I don’t need to be unpacking a car and removing the whole drivers seat. If you don’t understand what I’m saying there is nothing I’ll be able to say. It’s just experience. This was the location where I had to do the work. czcams.com/video/wSlCwbk9tTo/video.html

It is the daftest place to put a battery in a serious 4 x 4.
If that fills will water you will get all sorts of problems.
Land Rover never learn. The P38 had the ECU's under the front seat, the slightest water crossing and it would refuse to start.

I don't mean to bitch on about this vehicle but I have driven a bit in Africa and frankly I am amazed at the howler Land Rover have made here. The bloody ipad brigade that think electronics can do everything have no idea what a Defender is supposed to do and where.
It will sell well for a few years but not in traditional markets or in Africa, Australia or South America.
The Grenadier looks far more suitable for those markets.
I just think it a joke to put the Defender badge on something with 85 ECU's. In Africa they don't even want anything post 300tdi because of the electronics and the problems that go with them.

Try that job again using the positive terminal/connector immediately to the right of the earth connector. It seems to me that there is a connector lurking under that red plastic. If it can be peeled back, then that is where you should have tested it [having not tried it using the obvious charging lugs under the bonnet]. That is probably also where you should disconnect to remove the battery, complete with the short red cable to the battery positive post.
Worth a second look in my opinion.

A lot of it is the pressure to always lower emission. Engines aren't a simple suck, squeeze, bang and blow any-more. So many variables need to be constantly monitored by multiple computers that when ya average spanner monkey starts tinkering they cause more harm than good. For the life of me I can't understand why they don't just plumb an iPad into the dash. Build it so it can be removed and used in the lap or placed in the back or taken into meetings etc. It has a far better interface and apps available than any vehicle manufacturers bespoke head unit has. Things like HVAC, seat heating, all the other settings and adjustments could be done through widgets and apps reasonably simply I'd have thought. Tens of thousands of already available apps that can control your central heating and all sorts, plus already available apps for your car prove that.
Current iPads have as much computing power and storage as a Mac laptop and far more than needed to control most car functions and adjustments, probably with massive capacity to spare.

Just a thought but i always believed that a healthy voltage level of a car battery was just above 14 Volts so it might be worth further investigating about what is draining it when not being used. I also had a conversation some years ago with one of the parts department guys at my dealer in Ashford, Kent who incidentally was a mine of information about all things LR, who had a trailer of brand new LR cars delivered (possibly Discoveries) and all the batteries were duff and had to be replaced. I cant remember exactly the reason but i think it was something to do with them being GEL ones and they has not been correctly maintained as new from factory. All interesting stuff. Thanks for another interesting video, as always very well explained. Im interested to see how the new Defender looks after you have run it for some time as they are growing on me, having been to my local dealer here in Cornwall and spying them out on the forcourt ( i think they look cool all in black) to get yet another inlet manifold replaced on my D4 due to it cracking ! ... apparently it seems to be a common problem on Discovery 4 models ! also like the crankshft failure my friends car had a year ago on a car with low mileage and less than a year old! .... perhaps there is a market for a retrofit aluminium manifold replacement like the plastic sump that can be retrofitted with a metal one. Don't understand the logic of making so many engine parts from plastic. oh well it is the future of cars they tell me. Many thanks.

peter puchalski an automotive “12v” battery is considered charged above 12.4v, from 12 to 12.4 its part charged, any less and its flat. You would typically see 13.8 ish to 14.4 volts when engine running to show the charging circuit is working but more modern cars eg stop start have ECU control, sometimes not charging when not needed and “over charging” when on the brakes (for efficiency) - my merc does that and even charges up to 14.8v when braking, I presume the extra load on the alternator helps with the braking efforts by recycling some kinetic energy from the car to electrical current for battery charging. ♻️ :-)

    • @FJUH
      @FJUH Před 4 lety

Freddies Rc the weather isn’t really an issue. Batteries are designed for the harsh environment of an engine bay and, while it is true that a batteries efficiency deteriorates at higher temperatures, the main use of this is battery is for cranking and will be able to handle this task. The CCA of a battery is regulated by the electronics meaning even if there is some degradation in output due to heat it will not be enough to effect a properly working battery. There is no evidence that the life of a cranking battery (as opposed to deep cycle) is effected more in either position. Having to take the seat out and even unclip a box (I’ve had experience with LR plastics) to change or service is not a great design and imbues no benefit other than a less cramped engine bay. A dual battery setup also looks like tough work.

I was actually trying to find out where my battery was this weekend.
My car has a weird “feature” - after a couple of minutes with the engine off but the ignition on, it comes up with a warning that the battery is low and powers everything down.
I assumed it was an error - how am I expected to run a camping fridge or awning lights or a compressor (you get the idea) with the engine off? Surely these are the sorts of things you’d expect to do on a utility/camping vehicle.
I got my dealer to look into it on the grounds that it MUST be a bug, but apparently it’s a feature!?!
I measured the voltages (from under the bonnet) and its 14.5 engine on (so all working there) and >12 engine off - regardless of whether it’s given me the error message or not (so all working there too).
Maybe the dealer is right. Crazy.
I think I need to install a second battery setup for camping. Maybe a separate Lithium Ion lift out unit is the only way forward.
    Thanks again 👍

I hope you get it sorted out, no offence meant, but it looks like typical Landrover reliability issues are already starting to creep in on their brand new model. I wonder if Landrover will be asking you to delete this video like they did previously when you started mentioning faults on your new car.

The problem with EFB and AGM batteries, doing a simple power test isn't sufficient to tell if the battery is good you need to do an actual load test. Of which those testers can be damned expensive. I've seen EFB batteries show correct values but when put on load they just plummeted and couldn't handle the duty cycle. It's same with battery chargers you need the type that can handle those batteries and if you jump start them that can also cause damage. Wonderful batteries when they work but unless you look after them they can be problematic. Final tip, most vehicles have a charge cycle or battery reset. BMW vehicles are notorious for this in particular, but all cars need to have the right battery details or they'll cook the battery whilst charging and usually that's only done through the OBD II port.

There is probably no need to take the seat off, let alone remove it from the car. There is a big positive lead coming back to the right of the earth which probably disconnects and the lead comes out with the battery. That's my theory, together with there being enough space through the access hole to actually remove the battery while the seat is in place. In the unlikely event that there is not enough room, then detaching the seat and just moving it forward to touch the steering wheel should be more than plenty. No need to tilt it out of the door or to remove the electric seat connectors. It looks like the battery is held secure by a flange across a lip built into its base, a common enough system, so removing that would allow the earth end to be tilted up and the battery slid up and back at 45 degrees to remove with a section of positive cable the length of the battery attached.
I think this demo was way more work than is actually needed. Besides which, this test could be done with the battery cover on, simply by connecting the tester to the two jump cable lugs under the bonnet. Yes, really, as simply as that.

Just a thought but you could produce a set of dedicated jump leads which fit nicely on to those under bonnet terminals. Disconnecting battery on my Disco 4 can cause reset problems. Looking at the Defender online manual, (www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/document/3E/2020/T20737/38261_en_GBR/proc/G1798290) you might have problems with some systems resetting / recalibrating.
Disco 4 manual says don't charge - drive the car or seek professional support; but Defender 2020 manual says you can remove and charge with cautions. It would be interesting to see which systems are affected by disconnection/reconnection. (Also Disco's known to have problematic /faulty wiring connectors/poor earths which can create havoc with multiple systems. Have Land Rover responded about the poor service yet? Jon T
