  • Did you know in 1962, the coal reserves beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania were accidentally set on fire and it’s still burning out of control? All attempts to extinguish the blaze have failed, and the effects of the underground fire have made living in Centralia too dangerous. As a result, all but a handful of residents were forced to abandon their homes, and the once-thriving community has vanished.

Nice covereage! There are two areas of steam nowadays. There is a small steam vent in the town near the St Ignatius Cemetery. Another area of steam is just to the east of Centralia off of Big Mine Run Road where the steam emitting from the cliffs can be seen from the road. I did some carbon monoxide tests at both steam vent areas and recorded no CO. This means it is either residual heat or the fire is far away. Too far to record any CO.

Crazy to think the fire can burn for another 200 years
