      So true. RealLifeLore and Wendover didn't show how there were other restrictions in other countries for state operators and operators. This one did and I have been wanting to know that.

    The visuals you make are just always so top notch - from the way you use maps, the 3d models, even the way you utilize colorization. I think the shot at 9:12 is especially cool how the planes look 2d but as you zoom in, they are actually 3d models

      Also because of the more limited max. range of earlier planes, which made a refueling stop in Alaska necessary for many trans-pacific flights, for example between Japan (or Seoul or Hong Kong) and the contiguous USA - while more modern long-range passenger jets can fly such routes non-stop.

    Great video! As someone working in flight operations for a major airline, you definitely nailed the explanation of the processes of airspace risk assessment which are now in place since MH17. One minor improvement: when you mention airspace, you visually highlight the countries. It would be better to highlight the actual FIR's. For example, this further narrows down the actual available corridor via Turkey and the Caucuses due to the fact that Rostov and Simferopol FIR's extend even further south over the Black Sea.

      @@papapeethehunks Flight region information. Oversimplified, it is the area of airspace a country is responsible of. FIRs can extend beyond into small parts of oceans, and large countries can have multiple FIRs for better workload distribution.

      @@dbclass4075 if the acronym is FIR then that should be flight information region? Or should it FRI instead?
      Btw, large countries can have multiple FIRs so what determines between large and medium size? How would the likes of Metropolitan France be categorized or South Africa with the enclave of Lesotho inside it? Can countries have the same or overlapping FIRs?

      To be honest, we should notice that Malaysia airlines was one of the few airlines that decided not to reroute their flights over Ukraine in those days. They took a large risk to keep their routes the same. Looks like they have very low risk assessment and safety standards. I will think twice before buying the tickets for their flights

    It was a Buk TELAR (Tarnsporter Erector Launcher And Radar), one of many vehicles that make up the "Buk" system. Which consists of acquisition/tracking/targeting radar vehicles, C&C vehicles, a number of TELAR (what most people think of when they hear "Buk" SAM, and what most people have seen and been shown) and TEL vehicles.

    8:56 I live in Toronto and there's been a Volga-Dnepr Airlines Antonov 124 impounded at Pearson airport since the invasion started. It landed just before it began and was unlucky to be here when Canada banned all Russian registered aircraft. It's been sitting on the ramp at the airport for months now, racking up a hefty parking bill.

      I remember seeing this airplane from either the 401 or the 403 (can't remember) and thought it was probably impounded because of the Russian flag on the plane. nice to see someone else also noticed it

    As a exchange student in the US, now I need to take the world longest distance commercial flight since the closer of Russian air space. It took me 17 hours from New York to Hong Kong !!!!!!

      But NYC TO HKG flights are never over Russia? You either connect through the west cost or, when there is a direct flight, they’ll fly over the pacific which is faster!

      @@ld9124 First, there isn’t cross pacific flights. And all flights from US to HKG via Canada, the Arctic, Russia and China in the past. Now they all fly along the Russian air space after Alaska and through the sea of japan and east China causing a much indirect and long flight.

    Last month I flew from Bergamo Airport to Helsinki Vantaa and it seems that the most convenient route for that flight would be to cross through Kaliningrad Oblast, which, as stated by this video, cannot happen because of the no fly zone. However, the flight length was the same as it was before the Russia/Ukraine conflict. I’m very curious to know if I actually crossed through Russia or not…

    If I'm not mistaken, I believe you've change the titles of both this and the previous video? For me, I avoided both videos because the titles sounded clickbait-ish and I was so sick and tired of the endless mainstream media "ghost of Kyiev" style regurgitating blargh. Now that I've actually watched this video you've turned out to be very impartial in your reporting and the animations are absolutely world class, this video deserves millions of views and I hope she does better now!

    i dont think so indian airlines have been affected. Russia has not banned the use of its airspace for our airlines. So, we have an advantage compared to european airlines in the flights between north india and europe.

    Would love to hear more details on the tools available to governments and airlines to enforce these closures.
    For example, how could Russia respond if a French Airline decided to fly over Russia to get to a destination beyond it?

      but there is no restriction for foreign aircompanies to fly over Russia, as far as I know. But I guess it's more safe not to choose this route right now

    5:52 That your airplane is shot out of the air is also not in your economic interest: plane destroyed, claims from passengers (if survived) and relatives. Maybe claims from people or land-owners on the ground. Etcetera.

    I’m confused by if US banned the airspace to Russia, because a few days ago there was a IL-96 fled from New York JFK to Moscow VKO, it’s by Special Flight Detachment Rossiya. So I don’t think US banned the airspace to Russian only EU did. Someone can explain to me?
