The no.1 question i get asked with regards to travel cpap machines and cpap machines in general is 'how noisy are they?'
In this video i compare the 3 top selling travel cpap machines using the same settings and the same mask in the same room with the same recording equipment. They're all good but there's certainly a winner when it comes to noise.
Travel CPAP machines are a touch noisier than full size units however it's only a small difference especially at the mid to lower pressure limits.
Here's the data for each machine. Each machine has it's own unique sound profile. The z2 and the airmini were certainly quieter during use with the Z2 quietest at the mid to lower pressures and the airmini perhaps a touch quieter at the upper limits.
Overall Quietest to Loudest
1. Z2 Auto
5cm - 40db
10cm - 45db
15cm - 49db
20cm - 53db
2. ResMed Airmini
5cm - 46db
10cm - 50db
15cm - 50db
20cm - 51db
3. DreamStation Go
5cm - 47db
10cm - 52db
15cm - 55db
20cm - 57db
Tips to reduce the Travel CPAP Noise
1. Make sure the pressure reliefe settings (ie EPR, CFLEX, Z-Breathe) are on the lowest settings.
2. Learn how to change your cpap therapy settings (the clinical settings). In particular learn how to change your max auto pressure limit - IE how high the cpap pressure can go. As long ast your AHI (apnea hypopnea index) value from your sleep data is below 10 your only dealing with relatively mild sleep apnea and although not perfect it's still more than adequate sleep apnea control especially if only for a short period of time IE- A 2 week holiday or a camping trip etc. The lower the pressure, the lower the machine noise, the better the mask will seal. Set your limit and then the next day check your data and then keep bring the pressure limit down by 1cm until your AHI starts to increase... Then run the machine for a week and see what the data is after a weeks average.
3. Some masks are much quieter than others when using the travel paps. The masks that connect at the top of the head like the dreamwear and the N30i are not great. I recommend the following.
1. P10 nasal pillow mask
2. Evora hybrid mask
2. Eson 2 nasal mask
3. Vitara Full Face Mask
4. F20 Full Face Mask
Any questions please let me know. Thanks for watching

I use the Air Mini and find it easy to put the machine far enough away that it is practically noiseless. Unfortunately, air passing through the humidifier is very noisy, and it is only inches in front of your face. You should measure noise levels near the headgear, not the machine.
Folks, if Nick has given you valuable shopping advice, throw a couple bucks his way--he deserves it! I'm shopping for my first CPAP machine, a travel one for a Mexico trip next month, and Nick's fantastic vids will be an integral part of my decision, so I personally will be sending him a few Loonies.
How depressing for many. My neighbor was telling me about she can't sleep because she thinks the neighbor has a stackable washer and dryer when we're not supposed to really where I live. I just thought about he had mentioned that he has a CPAP. She did say if it sounds like something's going through a tube that's why she thinks that it's a washing machine or dryer but now I remember he uses a CPAP so that's what it could be I'm going to show her this video and let her hear it to see if it sounds anything like it. THANK you so much and good luck to everyone. I may have one of these in the future. I'll make sure I stay single lol 😱🙏
Hi guys, ResMed is trying to take down the CPAP Reviews channel. I think we might have 12 hours left. Here's a Facebook Group i started! Please join for support - facebook.com/groups/138127984943408 . If you have any free time please copy this and post it on the comments. Thank you so much! Nick
Hi Nick. Thank you for going to all that trouble. I’ve had the ResMed AirMini for around 3 or so years. It is significantly quieter than my original 2004 ResMed AutoSet Spirit.
The AirMini’s tube is quite long, so I can easily ferret the device well away from my ears. If I am listening to music when I drift off to sleep, I won’t even hear it. The AirMini is my regular nightly machine, and is easy to pack up for travel.
The main noise source seems to be the mask, which I should update one day. I am bald headed, with a beard, so I usually resolve leakages by tightening the straps. I should add that I am a mouth breather, with allergies and asthma, so I use a full face mask.
I like the idea of the Z2’s noise bafflement for the hose, and will investigate further soon.
Keep up the good work.
Appreciate the support mate. Both the Z2 and Airmini are my top choices for travel cpap units. Take care. Nick
how do you deal with the noise where the mask comes into your nostrils. It's driving me crazy
I travel and stay in hostels. Many bunk beds, so I wanted to know if others can actually hear the C-PAP machines as well. I noticed also, that the air flow sound is from the mask and the person using it is the person who notices it, since it is close to their own ears.
@@alanguages I recently spent a couple of weeks in hospital. The night nursing staff confided in me that while they knew I had a CPAP device with me, they could not tell if I was using it unless they were near me in the room.
@@Xubono Thanks. I wanted to know about bunk bed distance. Top to bottom or vice versa. I was curious if it was that close if the machine could be heard noticeably.
I know for sure, I will be using the C-PAP regardless, as my snoring I have been told was quite loud by others in the room.
Great video! One thing I do to cover up the noise from my dreamstation is run a white noise app on my iPad and place it right beside my cpap machine. Works great as it drowns out the inconsistent noise from the cpap machine with a consistent noise. Can’t sleep without it now.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing
You're getting noise from your dreamstation? I can barely hear mine and it's that quiet it doesn't disturb myself drifting off
Best review I’ve seen, answered all the questions I had and helped me decide which machine was the best fit for me
Thanks heaps
Hi Michael, thanks for the kind words. Glad you found it useful mate. Nick
Which one did you go for and what adjustments have you made since?
I'm going in to hopefully get my cpap machine today, I got married in October 2020 and we haven't been in the same bed since because of the noise, hopefully with the machine and your tips we can sleep together
i bought the Z2, high pitched whining is annoying, but found using a nasal mask with chin strap instead of full face helps. recently i realized if i put it in my suitcase with the top unzipped for air circulation, its dead quiet. at first i was worried about over heating, then i looked at the actual battery pack case and as long as the intake is exposed, it shouldn't be a problem
Great video, thanks for taking the time do these comparisons. Very helpful with the current recall situation on looking for another device.
The Z2 while technically quieter at lower levels had a different quality to the noise emitted. It was a very annoying high pitch that was vaguely reminiscent of a dentist drill or a smaller chainsaw that were at a distance.
As a woman my ears are biologically more attuned to picking up higher pitches.
To a man if they can hear it, it might sound more like a light whistling.
I know it would probably wake me out of a dead sleep with a panicked feeling that something was wrong. Possibly I could eventually get used to it.
My question on the Z2 was did you or did you not have that muffler piece attached? Could you do another video where you compare the sound with it not on and with it on please?
Just a suggestion: The next time you review sounds, perhaps ask your wife or another female to listen as well, and without hearing your review, see if they agree on the quality of the sound. Women wear CPAP’s too!
My Dr recommended the Z2 for travel for the small size and we find it quite noisy, though I do use a mask that attaches at the top. I might try the mask recommended here to see if that helps. Both my husband and I find the noise of the Z2 disturbs our sleep, giving off a three-tone whine or whistle. Mine never goes over 12. My Dr also told me the muffler was useless - “don’t waste your money,” but I tried it anyway. Couldn’t tell any difference except it was just one more thing to pack so I finally tossed it out. Good luck!
I have the air mini - I find it really loud - the noise comes right at the nose mask
I'm not sure where you're measuring. I have a Z2. As you mention in the video, the noise doesn't emanate from the machine itself, rather, the whine of the motor propagates up the hose and out of the exhaust holes. I can't use my Respironics Dreamwear mask that has exhaust holes in the swivel that sits on the top of my head and tubes that go down the sides of my face, since the sound is closer to my ears. Masks that have exhaust holes under my nose, like the F&P Pilaire, seem to work best. The Qtube muffler helps a bit, but adding a humidifier cartridge seems to help the most.
And as someone else mentioned, the nature of the sound is irritating. It's quite high pitched.
Keep up the good work. Friendship is not a word, not merely a relationship. It is a silent promise saying, I was, I am&I will be...
Greatest review for these machines
Much appreciated. Have a great day. Nick
My history with the older versions of the Tesmed machines and the current recalled Philips I struggled with noise. I decrease the pressure to lest than 10 and feel
It’s so effect now. Last nights sleep was the best in a while with the AirMini. I took your advice of using the nasal pillow. No noise which came as a surprise to my husband. Thank you, thank you Nick.
Sorry Resmed Cpap. Not Tesmed
For the resmed air mini: the noise at the machine is not a big deal. The noise at the exhale port or air through tube and mask noise is annoyingly shrill and loud. It keeps me awake, even with ear plugs. It didn’t make this noise when I did the set up test. Any way to fix it? Is it actually working correctly?
You may have referred to it in the video but which mask were you using to tests the machines? I've gone camping with my DreamStation (w/o humidification) and used the AirFit 30i which is very noisy (not noisy at home), After watching your excellent video I want to purchase the Z2 and use for camping and will need a new mask. Also, do you think my Jackery 500 is part of the problem for noise? Thank you Nick for all of your videos.
I am sure I would be at 20cm! thanks for all the reviews!!
G'day Marc, most welcome mate. Nah i doubt it. Majority of sleep apnea / snorers only need a little bit of airway support to keep a nice open airway. It would probably only be around 10% of people need over 15cm. Cheer brother
A great way to induce a central apnea. The general rule of thumb is to add 1cm for every 10kg's of bodyweight. I'm 90-92kg so I run 8.5cm (I prefer the little bit of leeway) then I limit the machine to 11 to open myself up when needed but not enough to induce a central apnea. So roughly bodyweight +2 I find is a good setting for the maximum.
Keep up the great videos Nick, I have a Resmed AirMini and a Resmed 10 with F30i for home. Yes, my sleep clinic only sell Resmed. 😡 You mention an adapter to permit AirMini to use F30i, or other masks. Please post details of adapter. Resmed don’t sell one and the only help they offered was to remind me that it might void my warranty 😡😡 Rather typical I thought.
Great review, thanks
Cheers Peter, glad you enjoyed it brother. Nick
I have the res med air mini. Using the N20 mask it’s pretty noisy on the air coming from
The tubbing. I heard in the video you said there was a muffler type adapter to help with this. What is that?
Hi Greg, yeah the Z2 comes with a component called the Q-tube which is designed for the purpose. It just dampens the sound travelling up the tubing. I'm not sure if it would be compatible with the airmini though, you would need to get that adaptor that lets you connect any mask to the Airmini. Cheers
We need a new mask for my husband. I’m SO tired of the super aggressive air blowing on me constantly. In combination with the noise of his current machine it makes for miserable nights for me. We will get a quieter machine to start with, but this mask issue needs to be addressed as well. Any suggestions? He currently uses a respironics nose mask and the air shooting out of it is horrible.
Hi there, check out this video i did czcams.com/video/5pDlwYzv3U0/video.html in particular the part that talks about how to adjust your pressure so it's as low as possible but still controlling the sleep apnea. Regarding the mask, if he's using a standard nasal mask that just covers the nose then i would suggest looking at the eson 2 from F&P. It has a air diffuser on the exhalation port which really helps with the mask noise. The brevida by F&P also has an exhalation diffuser. Hope this helps
Nick
Get the mask first, without leaks in the mask the machine won't have to pump as hard reducing noise
I recommend earplugs, that nowadays are really effective
Great video, can you please tell me what the decibels are for the bigger CPAP machines? Are they significantly lower or much the same.
They are significantly lower
Thanks!
Thanks Johnny, really appreciate the channel donation mate. Very kind of you
Resmed? I love the size but I get the feeling with a bad hose tug during the night it'll fly off the table!
Dreamstation go? Nice size, good support etc but... it appears to be not that much different from the full sized Dreamstation with the humidifer removed! Do you have a test of the noise of a regular unit?
Z2 is the way to go mate, i've got one and love it. I have added velcro to the bottom of it and it sticks to the side of my bedside table nice and low to the ground. Cheers
Never had problem with either one. Breas or resmed. Too bad Breas makes terrible chirping noise if EPR is set for high
Well shit... My comment aged well! Resmed all the way now!
Great video 👌👌🙏
Appreciate that brother. Lots of love. Nicko
Were you using the z2 wit or without the muffler?
i dont know if youll read this but i use the F&P icon plus that has the water chamber, but if i was to switch to using the z2 coz its smaller but it doesnt have the Humidification, how is that gonna affect my sleeping?
I have the Z2 and use the recommended attachment to help with humidification. Can’t remember what it’s called but you should be able to find it in an accessories list when shopping for the Z2. It’s a small plastic piece with what looks like a little blue sponge enclosed. It fits on the tubing as near the mask as possible, and it does work very well. They say it lasts for 4-7 nights. They are not expensive so I keep a stock on hand. I mostly travel for long weekends and toss it out after I get home, using a fresh one each time. Good luck!
The IDisc is very noisy. I cant sleep with it on.
Terrific
Thanks brother. Nick
please explain why some masks are quieter with the Z2 Auto. I have the F30i and it was sooo loud that I boxed the machine up during the night and prepared to return it.
I've noticed that masks that have an exhaust port on top of your head, and tubes going down the side of your face, are loudest, presumably because the sound is traveling in the tubes and are closer to your ears.
Does the Dreamstation change I'd the humidifier is added?
Hi Amy, what do you mean by 'change' ? The humidifier when added just adds moisture to the air to help with the dry mouth / throat etc. Cheers
I am on 20 mm of pressure.
Wow, must have severe sleep apnea! Hope all is well. Nicko
Hey man, appreciate that! Yes i most certainly do. I think someone clever could come up with a similar device for athletes and the like. Cheers. Nicko
I have z2 auto.
Nice one :-)
Is it okay to use resmed air mini as a primary cpap machine? I’ve recently been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and I’m looking to buy a machine (currently trialing the air sense 10) I got to my girlfriends every other weekend so I’m looking for something smaller and more portable, but I’ve heard conflicting things, the guy at resmed said it’s okay and that some people do use them as their primary and only machine whilst others have said they’re not designed for everyday continuous use.. before I fork out big bucks I wanna be sure I get the right machine. Thanks!
I've been using CPAP for nearly 25 years and I just bought the AirMini as my travel CPAP. I came to this video because of the immense noise (compared to what I am used to with the F&P ICON+ Premo) to find a way to quieten down the noise coming from the tube. That said, the only reasons I would personally NOT use the AirMini as my daily machine are the humidification and the noise. If you need decent humidification to prevent dry mouth/throat/nose, the HumidX or HumidiX+ HME filters for the AirMini may not be enough and be quite expensive to replace every 30 days compared to distilled water or distilling your own water (like I do). Also the noise coming from the tube on the inhalation is quite substantial (enough to keep me awake), so much so that I cannot use it. So I have already bought the Zephair adapter and just purchased the QTube tube muffler in the hope that it quiets the noise. I will update this comment when the QTube arrives and I've had a chance to use it.
Are any of the portable ones Bipap?
No i don't think so sorry. Cheers
Considering this is a video about sound, you’re audio is terrible. Anyone with headphones will agree - your balance is all over the place (but mostly just the left side)
Sorry about the Darcy, i will try and improve. Nick
Audio was fine for me.
