  • Even though I recently purchased and refurbished a ResMed AirSense 10 that was used in a hospital and purchased at a medical auction (see more on that at • I Refurbished a ResMed... ), I started to worry about what would happen if it broke down. Having a lifeline like this that isn't protected by a warranty is kinda scary. So I've been on the hunt for damaged AirSense 10s that I could acquire as cheaply as possible and use for spare parts, if need be.
    I found this one for $75, and my goal was just to see if I could salvage $75 worth of parts out of it. But I decided to go ahead and break it down, clean it up, and reassemble it before sticking it in the closet. Turns out, I actually got it working, and although it's not an ideal backup, at least it works, and it's there if mine should ever go completely kerflooey.
    In the meantime, my wife has decided she'd rather use this busted and half-dead AirSense 10 than the DreamStation 2 she was prescribed. It's delivery better therapy, and it's a good stopgap until she can find a new sleep doctor who will prescribe her a ResMed machine.

    Another great video. You did a fantastic job cleaning up this wreck of a machine. I’m so impressed since I thought it was a lost cause.
    Just recently bought a backup with 39 hours but paid much more than you. I’m not adventurous taking apart machines. LOL
    Also saw in your notes that your wife decided to use it rather than the DS2. I totally understand and would have done the same if it were me. I hope she finds a new sleep doc soon who will prescribe a ResMed for her. Take care…thanks!

    The people that bought my house from were smokers. At the time I didn't really think too much about it. I figured that a good airing out and some cleaning would take care of it. Was I wrong! It took close to a year to finally get rid of the stench. I had to seal all the ceilings and walls before I painted them. All the carpeting had to be replaced. I had to replace the furnace and clean the ducts. I had to replace the kitchen exhaust fan There was even brownish yellow slime in the wall behind the thermostat. Many people don't realize how hard it actually is to get rid of cigarette smoke.

    As a happily retired Respiratory Therapist, and a CPAP machine user, I always clean my CPAP machine first thing after waking. It takes me about 30 minutes to do it right. A clean CPAP machine, a 12mg Melatonin, and the 478 counting method all help me sleep great.

    • @robertbecraft5327
      @robertbecraft5327 Před 3 dny +1

      @@EvertG8086 The 478 method is a breathing technique that someone invented to help people that have difficulty falling asleep easily like a lot of people complain of. I worked nights for 25 years and once I retired, I had great difficulty trying to teach myself how to fall asleep like normal people do and never worked nights. The “478” is a simple system that someone invented. It goes like this: When you lay attempting to fall asleep, inhale slowly and count to four. At the end of the count 4, I simply hold my breath and count slowly till 1234567. After I reach the number 7, I slowly exhale and count to 1-8. Once you’ve counted to 8, simply repeat the previous 478 maybe more 10 times. That’s what I do. Simply relax and most people ease into a nice sleep. Look it up on the Internet and maybe you’ll discover something additional to help. I almost forgot to mention. Before I begin the 478 procedure, I take a flavored dissolvable Melatonin 12 mg tablet. Life is good. Hope I made sense. Good luck.

    The humidity chamber scaling can be easily removed by soaking in a large bowl of warm water with a few tablespoons of citric acid crystals dissolved in it. An hour is usually enough, though you do have to get into the corners with a stiff brush.

    For the DME this is what they call a smoker unit and the only use for it would've been to dispense to another smoker or make it 100% write off. It's incredibly hard to get the tar smell out even with a full disassembly and cleaning. Keep in mind that the hours can be reset by the DME to record compliance but what you have there is a potential working spare in an emergency.

    Ok, after watching this video, I took the chance and disassembled my Aircure10 Dpap yesterday Feb 21,2022. Same motor set up more or less. I have nearly 16k hours on mine. I do smoke but never in the bedroom where my Dpap is. (yes, mine is Dual pressure.) I changed the filter every 2 weeks and cleaned the masks/tank/tube every friday. Yet my motor looked just as bad, in fact worse than this one.
    I used 1 bottle, 16 oz of 91 percent Isopropyl alcohol. It came out jet black. I also used my air compressor, with a needle nozzle (about the size and length of a good toothpick, set at 20 psi to blow out particles loosened by the alcohol. After re-assembly I let it run for 2 hours.
    Before I cleaned it, it was NOT keeping accurate track of my usage hours, nor was it producing the proper higher pressure required. I would use it all night for 7 hours and it recorded 30 minutes of use. It had been this way for 2 months. Last night was the first usage since i cleaned it. Had to use the humidifier, but got 7 hours of proper use and yes, it did record that usage properly on the myair resmed website.
    Resmed needs to redesign this so the motor unit can be replaced, or removed easier to be sent it for a cleaning.

    I have been using a Airsense 10 for just under 2 years. I change the air filter monthly and clean the tubing about twice a month, but was not aware of possibly needing to clean the pump motor. Was all that gunk inside caused by not having a proper intake filter and also it being used by a smoker ??

    • @AdventureswithCPAP
      @AdventureswithCPAP  Před rokem +1

      Don't go opening your CPAP if you don't absolutely need to! You're right in the end: what caused all this was a failure to regularly change the intake filter. It was a filthy, gunky mess. I'm guessing it hadn't been changed in probably five years, and the weight of the particulate matter trapped in it weighed it down to the point where it wouldn't make a proper seal.
      That's the only way any air was getting through it at all -- it was going around it!

    • @AdventureswithCPAP
      @AdventureswithCPAP  Před 3 lety +2

      You mean removing the foam in the AirSense 10?
      I honestly just don't know. I would have to do some extensive testing to see if the foam has any effect on the flow-rate sensors. All I can say is this: looking at the internal structure of both machines, I think the foam is less necessary in the AirSense 10 than it is in the DreamStation.
      The AirSense 10 also seems to do a better job of responding to flow limitations. So if I were gonna de-foam a machine and attempt to make it work for me, the ResMed would be the one I would trust more to still function effectively.

    • @af1966
      @af1966 Před 2 lety +2

      From what I have read, the foam is really only for sound abatement. You should be able to remove it from the CPAPs that I know about and the only difference if any would be the noise level.

    I rarely clean anything on mine, but I also live where I don't need a humidifier. If you're using a humidifier, then it is important to clean the hose, mask, and humidifier chamber..

    • @johncochran8497
      @johncochran8497 Před rokem +2

      Might want to check on that. I used to believe that I didn't need a humidifier since I never woke up with a dry mouth or dry sinus. But instead I was waking up with a runny nose. At first thought, you would think runny nose = lots of moisture, and hence no humidifier needed. But as it turns out, the nose and sinus is used by the body to humidify the air going to the lungs and that runny nose was my body's reaction to the dry air in an attempting to increase the humidity. Once I started using the humidifier, I would wake up without having a runny nose, and of course, my mouth isn't dry either.
