      I would love a dampener that stops the ping but lets the vibrations through. I think a rubber band is close to the best of both worlds because it is so light. However, the aesthetic of it bothers me so much. Tried working on a dampener design that was equally light but attractive. Tricky to pull it off but I might give it another shot.

      Yeah, something like that. Minimizing the surface area contacted and/or reducing weight/mass as much as possible.
      I've even tried a super tiny dampener that needed bands around it to mount to the strings because I'd also like the benefit of it not falling out.
      I should make a video about this. Might be interesting to those who use dampeners already or use rubber bands...

    I've thought about the same question as well.. with the exclusion of the dampener, I'm thinking that "feel" is a function of the racket vibration spec (on TW Uni), the string and the tension it's strung at, and the string density at the centre => Feel = f(racket vibration) * f(string) * f(string tension) * f(string density)
    in a way, I'm postulating that Racket A could feel exactly the same as Racket B when the other variables are tweaked accordingly (where A != B, and at a specific swing speed window)
    anyways, it was just too much to think about and I've instead decided to let my felt experience be the final adjudicator

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Nice, I've had a similar thought. How does TW measure that, do you know? Maybe they detail it.
      This would also mean that applying lead tape would change such things. Makes me think testing in stock form for such details is best. But then what strings/what tensions until I know how it really feels before adding lead and understanding what I've changed?
      It's kind of a nightmare to think about and it makes me wish I never noticed haha. Felt experience is what matters most. It is the actual experience, your reality. I just wish I could assign context/data to it in such a way I can effectively chase or attain it...

    You really are a thought leader in the tennis industry. Snapback, parallel drilling, string spacing vs string pattern, dual forehands, and now this! This idea of string gauge affecting feel got me thinking about yet another factor for string & tension selection and hybridizing/blending. The general rule-of-thumb of thinner gauge providing more feel might be a myth after all? Excited to follow your journey on this topic.

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you for the kind words! An obsessive eye for symmetry and maybe some perfectionistic tendencies lead me down such paths haha. I don't want crooked crosses, I don't want a sub-optimal shot on the left side that also contributes to my muscular asymmetry. String spacing matters at least as much as string pattern, especially when people refer to such specs for the factor of spin. It's nice to have a viewer appreciating the merit in those observations/thoughts. Thank you!
      I wonder what I will find as I test some theories regarding gauge/feel/etc. Might not be too far from certain answers. Just need to try a couple more string setups on a racquet or two and I'll officially know which combo gave me the most feel.
      I'll try 16/17 on the PAVS next (it's 17/17 now) but it might have been 16/18 (zero/sync) that gave me the most feedback. I will try both of those soon and some other setups on my Dunlops.

  • @allainangcao28
    @allainangcao28 Před měsícem +1

    There are a lot of factors that play into feel: type of string, string pattern, string gauge, imperfections in racket specs, etc.
    I am not sure if there are major differences in dampener types such as the classic dampener, shock traps, and rubber bands.
    I know Tecnifibre has foam-filled handles, but it is not available in my area, at least in local shops. I would like to assume the foam softens the harsher vibrations but at least maintains some of the vibrations to maintain that feedback, but again, I am not sure.
    I have filled my handle with cotton balls, and the vibrations have softened. Although my feel is objective because I like a more muted frame due to arm issues on off-center hits. The vibrations are really harsh for me, and honestly, I have gotten used to the muted feel. My Wilson Ultra 100 V2 feels much more comfortable, and I do use a dampener on top of the cotton handle.
    I do wonder if cotton balls or foam in the handle would solve your problem if a frame has harsh vibrations fully stock and you want to tone down the harsh feel without sacrificing all of the feel.

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před měsícem

      I just want all the vibrations right now as some setups seem very disconnected. I just want a baseline of something really connected and I can deal with it after if I'm bothered but I've gone so long without really being conscious of this feel aspect of the experience and I'm trying to understand it by chasing this new dragon.

    Interesting, in my prcoess of matching rackets (using Briffidi SW1 Swingweight Machine), I had to bump up the static weight and Swingweight of both rackets since adding lead to one only couldn't make the all parameters match. Adding weight to only one, achieved a match for static and balance but Swingweight was way off. After adding lead to both, everything worked out BUT the balance felt off.
    The solution, take off the dampener. Removing the dampener takes off around 2g and 2 Swingweight points and also changes the balance.
    The vibrations are increased as well as the ping noise but the rackets "feel" better with that simple removal of the 2g dampener. Strange what that simple change makes.

    Interesting video! I too quit using a dampener cold turkey just last year. These days I vastly prefer to hear/feel what's going on in the stringbed. Regarding your mystery, I think the simple explanation about looseness and string spacing is probably the most likely answer... However what you're experiencing with 16 vs 17 gauge is something I've never considered before. But after thinking about it, perhaps it's like strings in a musical instrument. The thicker strings on a guitar create the lower frequency which I assume resonate or you feel more in the hand. It'd seem to make sense with tennis strings as well.

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think the looseness could be a big factor. Could also be age of strings? Maybe a little notching helps haha, especially at lower tension.
      I'm hoping that type of feel can be achived with a fresh setup, though. Not into that low of a tension on these kind of racquets.
      Could even be deeper like the strings being closer to resonant frequency of the racquet!! No joke. Which may or may not be triggered enough as long as I'm at or close to a harmonic of it.
      No idea...don't want to get that deep into it. Imagine if I start thinking about resonant frequencies of racquets. I'll admit myself to a psych ward if things go that far.

  • @Maiqel
    @Maiqel Před 2 měsíci

    I use dampeners because (I like the sound more and) the "tingly sensation" doesn't feel like it's giving me feedback of anything. When I hit the ball off-sweetspot I know exactly where I'm getting it by how the frame vibrates and twists in my hand, both SW-wise and TW-wise, so to speak. When my dampener falls off all I feel is this tingly sensation in my hand that happens the most actually when I hit the sweetspot (string vibration and frame vibration are not the same thing). So even if it is some "positive" feedback as opposed to frame vibrations, I think it's kind of confusing that one thing gives you feedback when you miss the SS and feels more "muted" when you get it (the SS), but another gives you a subtly different feedback when you hit correctly but none (or no that noticeable) when you misshit. It feels like it just makes it more confusing for me, without adding information.
    Do you get any extra information from removing the dampener that I may be overlooking? (after all I almost never play without it).

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před měsícem +1

      I know what you mean! I went by how the racquet wrestled my hand for that data, not necessarily the tingly data.
      Hard to say but I can appreciate the extra data. It makes sense to my mind and body with what else I understand is happening. Perhaps, specifically, touch shots. There is some precision detail data that might be unique to such shots and that sensation but heavy baseline rallies can be somewhat indistinguishable.
      I need more time on this end of the experience before coming back to really have a full circle thought!
      Thanks for sharing. It's relatable.

      I actually did full sync a few times and recently on the SX300. Guess I didn't make much content about it as it was before and during the move it was in my stringbed. Was good. Maybe a little more feel than not full sync (at the time) but a little less spin.
      Not the top choice for that racquet as it really plays better with spin/shaped mains but I can't say it wasn't good.
      The racquets you mentioned at the end of your comment seem like they would be better suited for a full bed of Sync than the Dunlops I'm using. Especially the VC95 and Prestige 93 (most of all)
      But I always like a little bite in the mains. Ether/Sync could be something I'd try in the smaller heads with tighter patterns since it is a 17L

    Hi - Me again from a few video comments before, I got the JP Prince Phantom O3 -- I watched this video before I went out to hit with that racquet for the fist time with the ball machine yesterday... You enticed me to take off my rubberband that I always use- I was pleasantly surprised. Though! I may have the reasoning why... this racquet has Power Pads installed on the 4 grommet holes in the throat.
    THIS could be the perfect solution of getting the best of both words in terms of feedback/pinging, and being muted.
    It still pinged, not as much as I think a completely bare racquet would do, but was still there.
    So some who may dislike that audible cue already won't be on board, but if you can stomach the pinging, the feedback of vibrations is still there, but reduced just enough to not be so jarring or offputting.

One thing is almost certain that bigger the head size the more feel you will get as strings can move more freely and more surface to amplify vibration. I actually don't like playing with dampener, they take away from the feel / vibrations and I also don't like to have weight situated around the throat / 6 o'clock.
    Listening to your thoughts in this video, I can't recommend the Tecnifibre TF40 more for you to try out. The raquet is foam filled which makes it filter out harsh vibrations but also transmits a lot of pleasant tingling into your hand, it simply has amazing feel!
    The sound is amazing without damp, as it is foam filled it sounds like a shotgun.
    It also has great stability, it is advertised as feel + stability racquet. It delivers amazingly on these two but it also has amazing overall playability, it has great touch, great spin, etc. It only lacks a bit on power which I am perfectly fine with as I can swing out freely.
    I am stuck with the TF40 after switching between 15 racquets, I thought I wouldn't find a racquets that is so well rounded, but here it is.
    Regarding feel, if you want the ultimate feel, try leather grips, they enhance feel alot. They also weight around 10-15g more which makes the frame more HL. This fits the TF40 perfectly and I really recommend you to try out this combo along with some silver / Grey colored strings as they are rumored to have the best feel.

    Hey man, regarding the 16vs17 gauge dilemma, I think the logic is there when talking about strings with as much snapback and durability as restring zero. The thinner version of zero probably moves more on impact, thereby absorbing or displacing more force and giving you less vibration at the bottom. With other strings, there may not be as much of a discrepancy in string movement between thicknesses, so that a thinner string (that moves the same amount on impact as the thicker version) will simply blunt the force less and you will receive more vibration at the bottom. This would indicate that restring zero is even more unique, and that its thinner variation is more like a gateway to the full fat version. But it makes sense, at least to me, that although the 16 is thicker, its insane snapback/immovability would absorb less impact and therefore deliver more feel.
    As for the two rackets with the same specs but different feel, have you weighed or balanced them? If one is slightly more headlight than the other, I would guess this more HL one has that added vibration, since the other would have more plow-through.
    good luck!

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci

      Interesting thought. Just to recap, are you saying that since Zero is so free to move, the difference in thickness is relevant in a different way than a traditional string? If so, is this reason due to the stiffness of the thicker gauge causing less displacement and therefore (maybe) more feel?
      Trying to understand what your logic is for why the thicker version of Zero would potentially send more feel than the thinner gauge.
      You said "...although the 16 is thicker, its insane snapback/immovability would absorb less impact and therefore deliver more feel"
      Are you saying thicker Zero has more snapback or that Zero in general has such insane snapback therefore leaving variables like thickness to outweigh other variables in favor of feel becuase snapback for either is off the charts.
      Hope that makes sense
      Thanks!

    • @nickdenardi
      @nickdenardi Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@time410s it makes sense. I guess I would lean toward the first theory, that its thicker iteration actually has more snapback. Because if they were exactly the same in that department, then all things would be equal and the thinner string would deliver more feel.
      I think 'immovability' was a bad word choice on my part but I guess the logic would be that counterintuitively, more (and more aggressive) snapback could generate more vibration. We already know that more stiffness does the same thing, which is why every stringer has to ban the elderly from using luxilon or their elbows blow off. So maybe, a string that can be moved more (no snapback) acts in the same way as a string that can be stretched more, in that it diminishes vibrations.
      But honestly, if you told me it was the reverse and that the 16 has less snapback etc. I could believe it. But I think the inverted (compared to other strings) difference in feel between the two gauges has to be related to it somehow. It's the only variable that makes sense with this string lol.
      PS I'm a rec player about 1/17th as good as you so this is all just fun speculation. If someone else gives a real scientific reason, plz go with that lol

      After those Head Extremes, I feel like I can only trust 1 racquet at a time, not 2 racquets of the same exact model. They are technically not perfect copies and this may or may not be all the difference sometimes and it slows down the speed at which I can test such theories.

    "Feel" is one of the most debated topics in tennis. It is a highly personal choice and a choice that is not easily measured. I think a player's taste of "feel" is highly influenced by when you started playing tennis. For instance, you would be used to a flexy/soft feel if you started with wood or a stiff/mutef feel if you started with a pure drive. The way I described how those frames "feel" are completely based on our senses. Someone that has only played with a pure drive style frame might describe that racquet as having great feel. What do others think?

    Whoa!
    A lot to "unpack" in this one!
    ( See what I did there 😏)
    (Dampener)
    So much to go into here.
    Personally, I've never really liked how racquets "felt OR sounded"
    without a dampener; sounding like a cheap frying pan; with vibrations you start to question;
    "How stablely built is this racquet really?"
    For me; at least, the "choice" of dampener is absolutely crucial.
    I've taken a really deep dive on this and was fortunate that I found what is to me;
    the GOAT of all dampeners...and that dampener is the; Babolat Custom Damp FEEL Dampeners.
    Anyone that's familiar with these dampeners knows that they're customizable (as it says in the name)
    where you can add or take out the plastic center; depending on how dampened you want it.
    I, myself, like it best with the centerpiece "out" where it provides
    a touch more feel and not a complete blanketed feeling.
    This dampener rectifies the horrific "ping" sound, any vibration,
    AND still gives me enough feel with my shots.
    IMHO, there's not a dampener that comes even close.
    (Feel)
    On that note, you do make an interesting point...
    Ever since I discovered your channel along with Restring and Toroline,
    a lot of your recommendations and preferences string wise I have personally found "very muted."
    But, now you have me thinking; is it strictly from the strings,
    OR can the dampener play a big role in this?
    I have a few racquets that are still strung up with Zero/Wasabi X, Toro Toro/Wasabi X,
    which I found, "ok," nothing mind blowing for my tastes/game style...
    Now, I'll try them without a dampener and see if that changes anything.
    (Personal Paint Jobs)
    Thanks for the tip, Justin...
    I was actually considering doing my own designs on some racquets that I can't stand the color scheme on.
    Glad you cleared that one up for me.
    (Racquets)
    It's interesting to see you trying "plus head-sized racquets" (over 100)
    Curious to know how that all started.
    Lastly...
    Thanks for the coffee shoutout!
    There will be more of those from me in the future 💯
    I wrote you another email in response to your last one with a few more questions, etc.
    Cheers!

      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Cheers! Excited for you to try Sync and see how that compares with your sense of feel/strings.
      I'm answering in reverse but...
      The plus interest mostly came from the free stability of a bigger head. Much like how a longer racket has "free" swingweight although I see that as much more of a cost than a gain since it is totally superficial in the benefits and very real in the effort required to swing. However, most 100+ are designed with many other "entry-level" traits I do not favor and that is unfortunate. I love the innovative design of the grommets/cutouts on the Blade 104 but why the heck isn't that implemented on a more regular model? Shame.
      Paint jobs - I look forward to finally submitting a design and then my racquet to someone knowing what they are doing. Will definitely log that journey as it starts and develops.
      Any thoughts on Rubber Bands as a dampener? I hate the look but it does stay in and minimally affects feel, maybe, and is very light. I'm also not a fan of the sound but I can totally forget about it.

    Thicker string at same tension = higher racquet stiffness. Try stringing the 17g RS0 higher than the 16

    Wow, you really are going down a rabbit hole this time. I play with 19 gage string which gives me tons of feel as it is more flexible for more pocketing. That's the feel i want. But a thinner string that is more flexible can also mute certain vibrations that you maybe enjoy as feel. Feel is such a subjective thing

    • @time410s
      @time410s  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes it's possible different rackets with different tensions of thinner strings could have more feel. Or thinner string in this racket at a completely different tension would have good feel too.
      However I could never use a 19 gauge. This should definitely be the last racket somebody really could anyway haha. So open.
      I hope to close this rabbit hole up, it's a pretty draining one.
