  • Alex Payne and James Haskell are joined on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby Podcast by England number 8 Billy Vunipola for a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation about why he felt he let himself down at the 2019 World Cup and his complicated relationship with brother Mako Vunipola. They also discuss faith, vulnerability, slapping George Kruis and why losing to South Africa in the final was a great thing to happen to him. And he springs a major announcement!

As a Pacific islander living in England.
This interview with Billy has been great that you touched on his pacific heritage and appreciating the spiritual side. Taking the time to explore his faith was outstanding; as you know, faith and prayer help us navigate through tough times when wrestling with mental health. I loved this interview.

I love this. I love how Billy is so open about his religion, his family and how he is always so focused on everything. Plus the fact he has personally opened about the way he was pre and post RWC I thought must have taken courage and he will no doubt have the massive respect of Eddie and his Sarrie & England team mates. GOOD, BAD & RUGBY ROCKS!!!!

Tearing into people like condemning them to hell for their sexuality? The reasons he gave were lazy at best. Burning bibles? So one person burns a bible, and all of a sudden it's the whole movement? Also, it seems quite hypocritical to paint everyone with the same brush over the actions of a few. I mean, do I need to get into the pedo abuse in the church, surely that goes against his beliefs, and therefore he shouldn't support Christianity? This guy seems really thick and pig ignorant to be perfectly honest. Good thing he is good at running into people I guess.

Big Sham 69 you might be right with all of that. He still holds that belief and viewpoint and discussing it in a respectful manner under the concept of freedom of speech is a positive for everyone involved in the discussion. You guys are nailing this.. It's impossible not respect Billy. What an incredible character to have around. And it's true, big characters succeed on riding the wave of their bravado, having a strong network or partner to act as the counter balance and prevent you from falling off the wave and becoming an arrogant N*b head is critical. I'm approaching 40 and still struggle with a lot of what Billy talks about. You never stop learning and life in general is a series of discoveries that hopefully develop you to be the best version of your self at that time. You just need to recognise the weak points in your character, accept and be honest about them and use whatever tools you have to improve on them.

Awesome episode. It's so good to hear Hask and Billy talk about their insecurities and issues around perfection. I only played at amateur level but really struggled with a similar issue. I pushed myself so hard not to fail and could never take the good away from a game there was always something wrong, something I missed. It's reassuring and concerning to hear these kind of problems affect Grassroots all the way to top level. I think particularly at our level mental health is hidden a lot under the post game drinks and initiation stuff until it's too late. I think there is more to be done in opening up this area, just the tip of the iceberg.

The Guardian jumping on this podcast immediately with Billy's opinions. The BBC then straight up copied the Guardian's article. My disappointment is that these papers suggest Billy's opinion is invalid. Maybe I don't agree with him, and I'm a Christian myself, but I respect his reasoning just as I respect all those who took a knee.
It's far too easy to be outraged over everything and all the different opinions people have. Just as Ugo Monye said, it's better to show respect for everyone regardless of their choice otherwise we become a culture of outrage and hatred.

@@samjones9866 That's a very lazy way to think about it - everyone has to choose to believe something even if they don't have faith. Plenty of Christians also took a knee last weekend - Maro Itoje and Marland Yarde are examples.
The key fundamentals of Christianity being that all have sinned and got things wrong, but all are valued human beings redeemed through no works of their own as long as their heart's in it. Many have bastardised it through not reading the Bible or cherrypicking quotes without exploring the full context as a uni student would. That includes people who are religious or not religious doing monstrous things. Indeed, Jesus was killed by religious people and the point of the gospel was not about these cultural organizations like religion but about faith and belief.
As I said I don't fully agree with Billy's reasoning but his peers have respected his actions without 'cancelling' him . And as for absurd beliefs - for the wrongs that people have done using the word 'Christian,' people of faith also used the above fundamentals as the foundations for UK moralism, for movements to the end of slavery in the UK, and for driving the civil rights movement in the US. You may not believe specifically but perhaps some of your morals are rooted in some of these 'absurdities'.

I really think Billy is a Top Lad. And i am happy for him to have his faith. But i don't understatement his point about BLM burning churches and bibles. I never heared about that happening. And if this is an argument for not liking BLM how do he support the church and so on.
Still i respect his opinion, i m just baffeld by this.

Truth has never been truer than what Alex stated about shouting from the Left and Right. People need to stop shouting and start listening.
